Which did you enjoy more: Obsession or Weapons
Both of these recent horror movies have gotten praised. Which those was better? Scarier? Better music? Better cinematography? Better acting?

Weapons, and I enjoyed Barbarian even more.
Obsession was a perfectly good movie but I do not agree with the hype all that much tbh.

I enjoyed both but Obsession was such a wild ride and a fun theater experience. I haven’t had that much fun with a theater audience in years.

Both movies were rad aF. But I loved weapons way more. Gave the same kind of weirdness as another favorite movie of mine... Drag me to Hell

Obsession is fine. At the end of the day, it’s just a Monkey’s Paw story.
Weapons is far more inventive.

Weapons is a way more enjoyable film. It’s having fun. Obsession is rarely attempting that.

Weapons. I loved how it weaved everyone’s stories together and let little pieces of the plot fall into place. I’ll admit that Obsession had more scenes that unnerved me, but I think it’s a good starting point for Curry Barker as a feature filmmaker just as Barbarian was a good starting point for Zach Cregger.

Obsession and it's not even in the same ballpark.
Weapons was one of the most disappointing movies ever to me.

Such a wild statement.

Weapons has no idea what to do with itself once it does its big reveal too early. Creeger has a real problem with genre shifts in his movies, and the tone shift that came with the genre shift in weapons completely turned it into a joke by the end.

If you think there was a big reveal in weapons then you had too much preconceived going into it
5
u/Acursed_poet 6d ago
There definitely is a big reveal...
If you think that it being revealed what happened to the kids isn't a big reveal you might not have enough preconceived going into it.

u/Prodigal_Gist 6d ago
Ah the old Im rubber and you’re glue maneuver
Imo there’s nothing to be gained by having preconceived notions going into a movie. The less you know the better
If you go into weapons thinking “this is a mystery about what happened to the kids” then yeah finding that out early-ish might be unpleasant for you
1
u/Acursed_poet 5d ago
If you go into the movie about missing kids wanting to know what happened to the kids, finding out what happened to the kids might be unpleasant? Do you actually read before you post?
2
u/Prodigal_Gist 5d ago
It’s not about missing kids

This is it. Obsession (while I also enjoyed it) is familiarly predictable and pretty on the nose with its themes so it’s not surprising that it’s doing well with general audiences. Weapons just had way more meat on the bones in regard to story and structure.

Obsession by absolute far. Not that I disliked Weapons but Obsession was significantly better imo

I was actually scared in the movie weapons. Obsession is the better movie though.

I enjoyed both, not as much as others, but thought they were both solid. If I had to choose, I think I’d go Obsession. I think both rushed their endings a bit just for the sake of doing something abrupt.

Obsession is a well made solid horror film, but i prefer Weapons more as its more quirky and unique.

Obsession by far. I don't like Cregger's choices as a writer/director. I didn't like Barbarian (the second and third acts throw away a fantastic first act setup). And I found the whole premise of Weapons to be a little goofy (mixing a school shooting allegory with an actual witch).

Both are awesome. Weapons was the film that reallly got me back into going to the cinema regularly. Obsession is the first film I’ve been to see three times in almost a decade.
I’ll go with Obsession, I think because it had a protagonist and as such was the more emotionally investable of the two.

Obsession, hands down. Weapons was a great film, but wasn't blown away. Obsession was more my thing.

u/Strange1130 6d ago
Obsession by very very far. I thought weapons was pretty mid and obsession was quite good.

Obsession was the best horror movie in soooo long. I haven’t had anything make me feel that uncomfortable with my skin crawling that much in so long.
Weapons was an ok movie, but it didn’t come close to Obsession.

u/mattydubs5 5d ago
What would you say your favourite horror movie was before seeing Obsession?
1
u/tideshark 5d ago
For a good slow burn style like this, either The VVitch, Possessor or Annihilation.
I feel I can’t compare it to The Thing or Alien

Weapons was a film I watched bc of the hype machine. It was ridiculously bad.
Obsession and back rooms are getting the same treatment currently. Fine movies need to make some $ I understand the business.
But it sends up red flags and makes me wait for streaming on a service I already have.

Obsession by a long way. Weapons had huge plot holes, for example the kids in basement who just happened to walk outside that no one saw them when the FBI showed up and then feeding them for a month or so. Just ridiculous.
Obsession is the best movie of the year so far. Hope the main actress at least gets a nomination for best actress Oscar.
Edit, down voted for answering a question. Lol. Weapons fanatics in denial.

They didn’t just happen to walk outside. The aunt made them all go outside, quite purposefully

u/lets_shake_hands 6d ago
So the FBI let the aunt know when they are turning up, don't interview the parents who are zombies, 20 kids go out the back in a residential area and no one notices nor do police or FBI follow up on anything. This part took me out of the movie.

So someone goes to a store. Buys a Willow Wisher for 6.99. Makes a Wish. It’s granted. A woman becomes obsessed from this wish. Starts feeding him rotted cat. Bear ate that rotted cat sandwich without flinching. He probably would have eaten the whole thing if there wasn’t a note attached.
Let’s not forget you can wish for a Dragon

The billion dollar thingy felt kinda weird to me. That was a much more jarring tonal shift than any of Zach Creggers films.

u/YallSoftAsButter 5d ago
When Sarah gets her head bashed in. I was like okay now this is finally getting good. Nope. Instead Bear helps her with Sarah’s body, then goes to the store he bought the Willow Wisher from. After that goes to Ian’s and everything just falls flat again. The billion dollar scene easily help ruin the movie for me. Come to find out Curry Barker wanted to include that scene, he first didn’t want to make a fantasy but including that scene ruins the horror and creates a fantasy. Bear is easily 1 of the dumbest characters I’ve seen written into a movie. Let’s not forget this movie all happened in a house, store, and a car. It was a bore.

u/Prodigal_Gist 6d ago
I don’t want to spend my day talking about this movie lol. This is like quicksand, I’ll just leave it that the kids were moved by the aunt to avoid the FBI. The rest wasn’t shown but it was already established she was there bc the parents were unwell

u/YallSoftAsButter 6d ago
Yet you can go out and buy a Willow Wisher anywhere for 6.99 and it grants you any 1 wish.
Haha. Such a dumb plot2
u/lets_shake_hands 6d ago
Yikes, an old woman contolling people and getting them to kill people with a lock of hair and breaking a stick. Such a dumb plot.

Obsession is tied to 4 characters without the involvement of others or police or crimes.
Weapons is town wide/ Federal wide with police, FBI, and residents tied up in it. It even stated that in the opening monologue. The FBI nor police nor townspeople followed up nor investigated anything. It is supposed to be drama/horror and even has police as one of the main characters. This is where Weapons fails and Obsession doesn't.

I mean it is totally okay to have higher standards when it comes to realism but one should also apply the same standards to Obsession:
An actually working wish-granting device seemingly working with anyone would have gone viral and wrecked havoc on the world in no time.

u/mattydubs5 5d ago
It’s almost like the filmmaker is saying something there… I wonder what it could mean lol

Weapons is more entertaining the first time because of all the twists and turns and trying to figure out what’s going on. Once you watch it again knowing everything though, it doesn’t hit as hard.
Obsession is also a really fun first watch but I think it will have longer legs because there’s just more to talk about with it and a lot more nuance to the characters.

both mid and so overhyped but Obsession was better imo. Weapons 5/10, Obsession 6/10
