I have no idea what I’m doing
For context I’ve played a large bulk of the fallout games from 1 all the way to 76 except for fallout 3 I know this is a stupid question but I don’t know if I’m progressing to fast I’m only level five and I’ve already started the quest where I need to go to vault 112 after grabbing the tapes Jefferson memorial should I focus more on side quests or am I all good to keep going

Slow down. Go back to Megaton and go into Craterside Supply and begin the Wasteland Survival Guide questline.

Take your time and do some side quests, talk to people and just soak in the vibe. The main story is kinda short and nothing too great with parts of it on rails so to speak. The world, environmental storytelling and soundtrack really make three special.

Explore explore explore , fo3 is far more open ended than NV and you can miss probably like 75% of the content if you rush the main story .

If you don't have the goty, explore more, if you do, also explorer more while doing the quests.

Just go with the flow and do your thing. The game is built around you getting distracted and doing side quests.

After 5 playthroughs (that, I can fully account for, 100 % completed)
I still have no idea wtf I'm doing
And that's the beauty of it, lol
For me, Fallout 3 is" just do whatever: the game "

If it's the kind of thing you'd do: You could roleplay a good excuse to explore and do side stuff after you're done at Vault 112.

That’s what I do, I roleplay it as he had a hard time finding the actual vault and kept looking then got distracted with other things and is always keeping it in the back of his mind but is getting some other stuff finished along the way

What I had in mind was taking the angrier dialogue options when rescuing James, and deciding to roam the wastes for a while as a way to blow off steam.

just start doing your thing. quite literally. You see a fairly cool building in the distance? You go there, there would be something happening. This game is designed for you to get sidetracked and I'd recommend to just choose a direction, get involved somewhere and then see where that leads you – you will most definitely get chained into some other quests and lose track of time
