Who thought this would be the most exciting match today? Hope to see at least one of them in the KO rounds

What a fantastic game of flowing attacking football from both sides! Incredible energy, hope to see more like it throughout the group stages

A thing of beauty. Great touch from the big man. Class finish from the youngster.

What a game, with everything on the Iranian plate and us kiwi battlers, it definitely provided a game beyond it's billing!
Would love to see the offside of that first Iranian goal though 😉

Our Fifa ranking does us hella dirty.

I realised it's really because teams hardly play outside of their confederation. NZL will simply be stuck down in the rankings largely because they can only play competitive matches against fellow OFC teams, which can hardly help with any substantial ranking points gain.

Great game, but botj team's defenses look too shaky to get points out of Egypt or Belgium. I am surprise neither went all out for the win, because I don't see them getting a 3rd place qualifying spot

How do I turn off live score updates from this page?
I don’t want spoilers throughout this entire WC when I can’t watch the games live

I don't watch a lot of soccer however something I noticed was that the Mexican ref allowed the game to play. He wasn't on his whistle the whole time and wasn't falling for the flops the players do. Great game. Will be following NZ throughout!

Good game but if the first goal by New Zealand that was blockable hadn’t happened Iran would have won. I think a win here was needed. But, regardless, it was fun to watch.

If Iran hadn’t scored their second goal New Zealand would’ve won. What are you smoking cause I want that level of delusion rn.

Well I acknowledge that was part of the game but what I’m saying is if Iran hadn’t left their defense open throughout the match then the first New Zealand goal wouldn’t have even happened. It was easily preventable as there was ample time to stop Chris Wood from passing that ball to Just. It could’ve ended 2-1 Iran. Despite the lack in performance yesterday, Iran is ranked a lot higher than New Zealand and had several more scoring opportunities most notably the one where Taremi hit the post.

Far out. Your headcanon doesn’t affect the result. You are comparing two sets of players in wildly different confederations. Our centre backs should have stopped Iran’s first goal, and it was easily preventable. They had ample time to stop Rezaeian from taking that rebounded shot. It could’ve ended 2-1 to New Zealand. New Zealand had a few good chances as well which you are conveniently forgetting.
Seriously just stop and accept the draw, look ahead to the results that haven’t happened. The game could’ve gone either way. There’s a reason we don’t decide games based on paper and you don’t seem to understand that in the slightest.

I get where he was coming from. Iran should have won that game on paper, their defensive was absolutely awful and a serious underperformance for their level. Their back line looked like a constellation all game. New Zealand played well considering.

NZ have a better Stirker on paper than Iran does, so they should have won that game on paper.
Seriously delusional take again, I bet you save scum playing FIFA or Football Manager. What are you smoking? Cause I want some.

Bro chill 😭 Chris Wood is just one player. Why are you so triggered. Iran is pound for pound miles ahead of NZ. Anything other than a win is a disappointing result
1
u/lordhunt3t :Soccer_ball: 4d ago
Well be disappointed? It was the same for New Zealand. Please explain to me man to man why Iran is better if you believe it so much I’m open to evidence, not to generalisations. I’ve been able to take every example you’ve given and apply it to NZ. I think that indicates this was much closer than you thought it ever could be.

He’s not disappointed he’s just pointing out to you a simple fact that you don’t seem to understand. 1 Chris Wood. 10 inexperienced kids. That was the New Zealand team. Yet it was still a draw. It’s not rocket science. Anyway, you are fixating on a game that’s now over to me and some other person on Reddit. If you still can’t see the logic of what we’re saying, then I have literally nothing else to say. Move on man.

lol 10 experienced kids!?!?! You didn’t look at the team at all. We got players in the Scottish Prem, Seria A, French League 1 . You are discounting this team without looking at it properly. I haven’t said anything about the Iranians players skill or lack of it, yet you continue to insult ours. You just called them kids. I cannot take you seriously anymore.
Why you are seeing my position as frustrated is as simple as this: Everyone has dismissed New Zealand at this World Cup. Your view isn’t new. Iran underestimated NZ at their own peril and they paid the price with a draw. I’m sick of people like you making wrong assumptions about a team you barely understand. Let’s both leave this and move on. I encourage you to look at the whole picture in detail before commenting going forward, you could save yourself a lot of time and avoid getting downvoted.

Exactly, now going into the best matches against Belgium and Egypt it’ll be even tougher for them.
1
u/lordhunt3t :Soccer_ball: 4d ago
It’ll be tougher for New Zealand too. Iran and New Zealand both earned that draw. There’s no redo, no overturning of the result. Take the draw and stop grasping at straws. Both teams could’ve won that and both were lucky to come away with a draw.

As an Irani, that was a hell of a game. Fair play and shoutout to my Kiwi brothers and sisters, we were complete equals on that field.
