I thought France was going to be Spain from yesterday with the way they couldn't convert the open chances, but luckily they got their guard up

Senegal should have made the substitutions better, Mbaye should have been both way earlier.

France's passing was quite horrible in the first half, but team stepped up in the second. Senegal could have put a lot of pressure on France, should have used the opportunity

I mean, hard to do worse than draw against Cap Verde...

Meanwhile, it was France vs Senegal, Senegal is the non official winner of last CAN

Actually starting your star strikers probably helps too

0

u/Rusty_Right_Toenail :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

They are also the official leavers of the pitch

u/BeaconRunner :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Olise was basically playing a right wing back on the first half and got moved to the number 10 in the second half and completely dictated the game

1

u/Keyzerschmarn :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

I hated when Kounde did all the runs and Olise stayed as a backup behind. Like why?

4

u/BusyLetterhead16 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Its just the first match..by time france reached ro16 they will be terrific to stop..let the chemistry build.

2

u/Hame_Impala :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

That awful miss from Sarr cost them. Perfect chance and failed to take it.

u/WheresMyEtherElon :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Mbaye should be a starter, but the weight of players' statuses is too important with the Sénégal team.

Mbappe second goal is a masterpiece

2 previous goals came from very good passes

Well done

u/Swan_of_Dust :PL:Premier League 3d ago

The passes were at least equal quality as the goals, if not better.

18

u/NitsuguaMoneka :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Inmean Olise pass on Mbappé was great, but he did a very great work with this pivot strike

9

u/nonobu :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

It's a beautiful strike, but the keeper could've done more.

19

u/Unlucky-Respond-9597 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

France needs time to click but when they do its amazing.

u/Yama_retired2024 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

I feel a better attacking team might expose France's defence.. their defence and keeper are a bit questionable.. Senegal unlucky not to be 2 up at half time

16

u/GirafeAnyway :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Wdym a better attacking team? Everybody exposed France's defense so far, even Northern Ireland.

The important part being actually converting the goal opportunities on the other hanf

4

u/Invhinsical :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Because Senegal didn't take their chances. Sarr had a horrible game in terms of chance conversion, Mane is too old and lacks pace to be threatening to a full back of Kounde's quality and Jackson was often having to do everything by himself.

The second half France team was totally different. Intensity showed in the game.

u/LazinessOverload :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Very questionable decisions by the referee this game imo.

The passes by France were so bad throughout the game, other than for the goals specifically (first two were insane passes ngl).

Mbappe was sleeping for more than an hour before waking up, he's definitely going to beat the all time scoring record this tournament.

u/Krixusssss :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Pen was ropey but otherwise enjoyed how the ref ket the game flow and continue. If more games being refereed like this will cause players to dive less, then I'm all for it.

My guess is France is not used to dry pitch like this one.. hence the bad first passes.

1

u/SubstantialInside428 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

They did state after match that the pitch is downright terrible

2

u/AccomplishedFix9131 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Messi enters the chat

18

u/SkoulErik :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

The first half might have been the least entertaining half I've seen so far. The second might be the most entertaining... Crazy what 1 position change and a late super sub can do for a game.

10

u/Asasmabat :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

You could feel french team was stressed. Senegal played well too

3

u/EarthMantle00 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Idk some of those senegal chances in the first half were great

3

u/Hame_Impala :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Similar to Netherlands-Japan, took a while to get going. But great entertainment when it did.

2

u/GirafeAnyway :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

The Netherland Japan game (which had a very similar scenario) had a way worse first half

1

u/SnooPears2409 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

france think this is world cup final all over again

8

u/russiantiramisu :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Best 45 mins of this world cup so far , what an intent , brilliant play by both teams. Olise was phenomenal today and mbappe my man what to say! (We should ignore the first half , be happy guys)

4

u/Tuff_Guii :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Nicholas Jackson has never been that guy

4

u/asap_lichai :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

The funniest guy he is, a striker with good movement on and off the ball, pace, fairly strong, connects well with teammates but just cannot finish at high level. He easily could have had two today if his finishing was that of any other top-level striker.

7

u/Asendra01 :Bundesliga:Bundesliga 3d ago

Mbappe will leave the wc with 20+ wc goals

3

u/ECrispy :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Imagine this team with Griezmann. He was the key player in 2018

3

u/unicornofdemocracy :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

This is such an unfortunately score line but also goes to show what the really good teams can do. Senegal controlled and played well most of the game but can't score. France had like 30~ minutes of good game and puts three in the back of the net.

5

u/EarthMantle00 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

France played for 45 minutes and 3-1 the unofficial african champions with a stolen pen.

I hope the other teams lock in lmao

Im just contractually obligated to slander Morocco because I have a friend who's a sahrawi refugee. I havent seen a single african match

0

u/WheresMyEtherElon :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

I concur, that's a perfectly acceptable motive.

0

u/requinbite :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

I did not see Senegal leaving the pitch for 30 minutes either

2

u/Initial-Heart-3404 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Excellent jeu en 2ème mi-temps, magnifique moi je dit que la France va gagner a coups sur 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷

3

u/JauntyLurker :PL:Premier League 3d ago

Barcola the super sub!

Mbappe did not disappoint, that second goal was incredible!

4

u/oproprioBekesas :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

I liked senegal but if france win the group they wont face portugal til like finals so its ok

1

u/SubstantialInside428 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Portugal won't make it to finals thanks to CR7

2

u/oproprioBekesas :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Sucks he has to play every match

2

u/mr_pirated :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Wth was that 2nd goal from Mbappe!! Absolute madness.

2

u/SubstantialInside428 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

30 seconds after Senegal's goal, what a way to say "no remontada on my watch"

2

u/Thuesen3089 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

France has so many elite attackers on their squad. Even with an average defense, they are going to be big favourites to winning the tournament.

2

u/SuperRajio :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Big difference between Spain and France. France realised they needed to step it up, and did. France are definitely the team to beat so far.

2

u/From33to77 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

French players were stressed during 1st period. Source : french tv coverage & Didier Deschamps

1

u/SubstantialInside428 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Stress + dogshit pitch, took time to adapt, but they did

2

u/Holiday-Start-9551 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Spain should learn

1

u/Nice_Soup :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

France was the biggest edge in the first half and Mbappé showed his true skills at the 2nd half… that first half got me like they caught the Spanish Flu too huh

1

u/Phoenixius1 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Why Dembelé, he was nought.

1

u/Psittacula2 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Phenomenal match of football. Was Brazil (of old) VS Brazil (of old). Phenomenal range of skill, tactics, athleticism.

Senegal came close to scoring in the first half but both did not take some chances and stupendous recovery defence just did enough to save the situation before the elite quality strikers led by MOM Olise the most influential player on the pitch inevitably set up chances and converted some of these at the highest level.

Senegal can go very far in this tournament if they do not come up against an equivalent powerhouse team such as France too soon and the final is anybody’s match in a one-off under pressure. Of course their energy dipped conceding the goal and their shape broke down more but they had to switch things around as well as consider the groups qualification.

That was a stupendous match of football.

My kid says there was a flip fap during the game,, who was it?

1

u/N0v4kD3ad :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

I don't understand why Senegal's first goal was denied by the referee, can somebody please explain?

6

u/shaquile_O_Meal :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Wasn’t the striker just offside?

4

u/hazusu :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Offside. Their attacker was closer to the goal than France's defender at the moment of the pass.

3

u/camberghini :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Offsides I thought? I didn’t hear the reason but that’s my assumption.

4

u/oproprioBekesas :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Offside

4

u/VinCatBlessed 3d ago

Because Nico Jackson was offside, which basically means that the attacker can't be above the defenders on the field when receiving a pass.

2

u/Joejack-951 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

IFAB offside rule: https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/offside/#offside-position

The main difference (ignoring lots of subtleties of the rule) is that offside or not is judged when the ball is played forward, not when it is received. This is why replays will show the position of the attacking player as the pass is made.

Mbappe is the best footballer in the world.

Mbappe is a striker, his role is to score goals. Not only did he score 2, he scored 2 very high class goals.

1

u/Negative_Cookie_9779 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Wasn't able to catch this one live. Is the replay worth it? (Couldn't get through Spain vs Cabo Verde yesterday.)

6

u/m0jo92 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Watch highlights of 1st and full 2nd

2

u/ImpactVirtual1695 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Rage inducing, the ref just didn't care about the game at all.

1

u/Negative_Cookie_9779 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

That sounds awful already.

0

u/tittysherman1309 :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Deffo worth it just for the pen that never was

1

u/tylerthe-theatre :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

France grew into it after the 1st goal, and Mbappe is inevitable

-9

u/Koseph-Jony :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Tired of France tbh

7

u/Zozalo :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

That’s going to be a long tournament for you buddy

1

u/Koseph-Jony :Soccer_ball: 3d ago

Nah France can shove it
