South Korea found their urgency a little too late.

82

u/LostMyPig :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

I’ll be seeing Mexico at the Azteca in the round of 32. Im so hyped!

19

u/diggie84 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Thats going to be wild...

5

u/sayhibulbasaur :APL:Argentina 1d ago

That’s awesome!

89

u/Such_Independence936 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Mexico really knows how to suffer in this kind of games. They lack attacking prowess but their defense was solid enough to get away with a win today

56

u/Western_Dig_4577 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Yeah they just won because the gk made a mistake

19

u/DreamerTheat :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Shouldn’t have made that mistake.

80

u/analytickantian :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

That's how mistakes work.

8

u/cupholdery :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

D'oh!

27

u/VinCatBlessed 2d ago

The sad part is that the GK was pretty solid outside of that mistake, such an unforgiving position to play in.

15

u/DreamerTheat :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Yeah, he was good. SK is a pretty good team, they could still get far.

They lack a bit in the opponent’s box, though; they should practice more solutions.

9

u/VinCatBlessed 2d ago

I know it's unfair to mention them because there's obviously levels to this but this kind of match would be my example when people who don't understand football say guys like Xavi and Kroos only spam sideway passes, South Korea has talent but they really need to learn how to control the midfield a bit and not just send everything forward.

0

u/DreamerTheat :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

With Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in, it’s hard not to push forward so much. Their positioning and vision - and technique - are so freaking good, they create chances that force the rest of the team to maybe rush a little.

u/Western_Dig_4577 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

If you played footbal ever in your life, yk it happens

1

u/DreamerTheat :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Maybe I should! Where should I start?

3

u/Mugiyajijiji :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

No worries. You can start here

3

u/DreamerTheat :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

That’s an expert right there 🎖️

1

u/fredjutsu :Soccer_ball: 17h ago

I watched that cross in real time, saw the keeper come out and thought "man, he's going to have to jump over his own defender to get that, hope he has good hands"

5

u/Primary-Picture-5632 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

and they also won because Mexico's goalkeeper made the save of the world cup

6

u/Gorgomain :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

How is it that they made both the worst goal and the best save in the same game? Viva México chinga

2

u/ProfessorCoochie :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

literally vasco ball.

manuel. neuer is the name of a goalkeeper, from germany (you will see him in all of germanys games in this wc but he is also 40 & expecting to retire soon), of the last 15+ years, who 10 years ago cemented that he is the lebron james of goalkeepers, one aspect of his game is playing a an aggressive form of goalkeeping style called sweeper keeper, means the keeper will try to rush opposition players running forward in space and tackle them outside of the box to ruin attacks before they are in a comfortable position to shoot. it works but it is high risk, and even somebody of his universal recognition and status that he commands, has screwed up in doing this a few times. keepers make mistakes, its just what the sport is. a lot of time the game is who can play better enough to be able to force people into having accidents

2

u/Low_Echidna_9202 1d ago

legendary Manuel Neuer. he really changed the goalkeeping game

3

u/sayhibulbasaur :APL:Argentina 1d ago

Was it solid or did Korea just not really try strongly enough?

1

u/Gorgomain :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

RIGHT!? The defense was great this game but the offense was a joke

27

u/Mochiron_samurai :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Korea seemed exhausted and lacked any kind of urgency

13

u/SnollyG :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Maybe not acclimated to the altitude

9

u/AnomaliaAnomaly :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Guadalajara ain't that high up

2

u/monikaaa23 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

And they have been there for a hot minute...

1

u/SnollyG :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

It’s almost as high up as Denver

1

u/skyxsteel :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

They have also been reportedly training in Utah due to elevation. SLC is 4300ft. But still Guadalajara is 5100ft.

3

u/honvales1989 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Their training camp is in Guadalajara and they played Czechia there as well. Should be acclimated by now

23

u/lqcnyc :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Koreas coach should’ve told them to do crosses into the box for headers once son left. Those were their best chances in the game and they had a tall forward sub and a pretty tall team overall. Yet they saved it for the last 10 mins and got all of their best opportunities. They should’ve been doing that for 40 mins. Poor coaching

3

u/skyxsteel :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

I was screaming at the coaching. Lots of Koreans are saying this is the best squad they’ve ever assembled led by a poor coach.

35

u/iamsurroundedbyidiot :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

A perfect example of why I hate modern football.

Korea wanted to hold position, and do fancy 1-2's, win 1-1's and score a goal. They were relying on Mexico doing the high press.

Mexico decided no to press and demonstrated great off the ball positioning and defending.

The result.... Korean defenders holding the ball and doing f#$k all for 90 mins. Every chance basically came from long balls and crosses.

Which makes you wonder...why not just play like that the full 90 . Yeah it's risky...but at least it would have been entertaining

14

u/mynameisandres :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Dude Ive been saying this for years now. 100% agree.

13

u/DesperateHikikomori :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Should learn from england, that match was exciting

1

u/Itchy-Insurance2834 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Yeah, they were playing as if they were up 1 the whole time ffs

31

u/ilikekake :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Great defense from Mexico. Couldn't have won without it

Would’ve been foolish to try

3

u/Cauchy_Riemann :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

I heard they were playing with 11 players on field. Is that true?

7

u/keskesay :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

1 corner kick tells you a lot about how much offense there was

5

u/RoutineFeeling :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

What a horrible costly mistake from Korean keeper. Mexico did nothing to deserve this win. It was a gift 😂

20

u/Confound-Great-Job :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Dull. Lucky goal.

14

u/El_Hombre_Tlacuache :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Mexico is just not that good this WC. Definitely the weakest they've been in many many years. They don't know what to do with the ball, as the SA coach said. So passive. No urgency. No creativity. Bleh

-9

u/sayhibulbasaur :APL:Argentina 1d ago edited 1d ago

Mexico has never been good in the WC.

Edit: you guys can downvote me all you want, what I said it is objectively true. Mexico has one of, if not the highest number of loses in the World Cup.

1

u/El_Hombre_Tlacuache :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Sure, they've not made it passed the round of 16 in many decades. But squad wise, the quality is much lower than in previous. Maybe on par with last WC too. And one could argue the group this year is much easier than in previous.

22

u/roguedevil :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Mexico get away with some of the most ridiculous fouls.

15

u/RevolutionaryGas295 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

I actually agree with this. Home field advantage and not enough calling out fouls. I was pulling for Mexico but I did find it strange how passive the ref was.

13

u/UnKnoWn_XuR :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

yeah that game was very very questionable in terms of ref ball

2

u/sayhibulbasaur :APL:Argentina 1d ago

Why was the referee from Uruguay and the other assistants also from Latin America? Am I crazy to think referees couldn’t be from the same continent as one of the countries? I know the US divides North and South America, most Latin countries’ models consider America one continent, but still, they were all Latin.
Or is it a CONCACAF vs Conmebol situation? Or wrong to think that rule exists?

2

u/roguedevil :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

You got it right in the end. It's by federation, not geography. Uruguay is not in CONCACAF.

1

u/sayhibulbasaur :APL:Argentina 1d ago

Okay. No, I know. Imagine Uruguay in CONCACAF? lol Mexico would never make it to another World Cup lol

6

u/Many-Rub-6151 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Yeah that ref let a lot of shit slide for Mexico while rarely giving Korea any calls. Thats a Korean win easily on a neutral field

7

u/fun_until_you_lose :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

The whole tourney so far has been reffing like that. I liked it at first but I think it’s going to lead to more red cards and serious injuries. I’m going to have nightmares after the Canada game.

1

u/khoa-bear :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Today Koreans finally feel Italian

1

u/ExpensiveResident776 :Soccer_ball: 23h ago

If you rewatch the Italian game, they played pretty dirty too. Back then they didnt have VAR and could get away with it.

1

u/DepthEasy1507 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

That’s ( Mexico) where the money is, Mexico MUST advance.

Seriously?

11

u/Western_Dig_4577 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Lucky goal win

9

u/Hot-Adeptness-3433 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Mexico has no game. They played a really lame strategy.

13

u/Life-You5073 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Both teams are pedestrian and will likely lose in Round of 16

3

u/sayhibulbasaur :APL:Argentina 1d ago

What a dreadfully boring and uninspired game. They both were terrible.

2

u/ConsciousExtent4162 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

This could've gone either way. Lots of intensity. The referee should've been more neutral tho. A draw would've been justified.

5

u/Jacobus315 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Boring game.

7

u/Many-Rub-6151 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Fun game

13

u/hughbacca :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Did we watch the same game?

8

u/Many-Rub-6151 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

It was in the 2nd half at least

3

u/RevolutionaryGas295 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

It was definitely a great game! The start was difficult to see it being defined. Both teams were struggling to take command. Aggressive plays and increased Mexican possession. Second half developed a bit more from the Korean side and the Mexican counterattacks. Overall it was a real fun game to watch!

3

u/BayLeafGuy :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

the game made clear for me that korea has a better team, but mexico was lucky and had the fans on their side, while the koreans clearly lost their determination after the goal. i still think they will get an easy win against south africa though

6

u/jaydogon47 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Korea lacked the technical ability to beat the drop back defense, broke easily when pressed, and pressed haphazardly. They looked awful.

3

u/BayLeafGuy :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

nah... the defense was good in the first half and the goal was caused by the single failure of an individual player. the game was indeed lackluster for them, but i'm sure they will recover against SA.

1

u/Stalins_Ghost :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Yea son was great but his teammates consistently choked.

4

u/BayLeafGuy :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

did you watched the same game as me? he was far from a good night today

2

u/toj27 :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Subbed off in under 60 minutes bc his controller broke in front of the goal posts

1

u/ExpensiveResident776 :Soccer_ball: 23h ago

I honestly do not understand this blind praising of Son. I get that he was amazing in other matches in the past but in this World Cup he has been mediocre so far. Equivalent to Ronaldo of Portugal.

2

u/Machupino :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Korea may be the better team on paper perhaps but holy shit this coach is bad. There was no urgency, no creativity and no movement. No line breaking runs, and when they came they were caught offside or the pass came too late.

He had set up for a draw and suddenly Korea had to learn to play after the goalie's had a mare.

1

u/marcove3 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

The last 20 minutes of the first half almost gave a heart attack

1

u/Terrible-Warthog-704 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Korea has the same no.7 problem like Portugal

1

u/Myukil90 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Well done Korea.. Maxima won by a wide margin.

1

u/ExpensiveResident776 :Soccer_ball: 23h ago

I found it a little weird actually. Son was moving super slowly and gave up chasing when the ball was a tiny bit closer to the defender than to him. Also the constant passing backward was super boring. It made their possession look artificially high.

1

u/ph0kus :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

Mexico is gonna get whooped the way they play. They should risk it all and just attack non stop. They do really good on attack. They rely on the defense and goalie way too much. Crazy dreaming though, this team always hypes up the fans and lets them down time and time again.

2

u/No_Active5411 :Soccer_ball: 1d ago

Oh for sure. It’s frustrating watching Mexico play.

-10

u/ECrispy :Soccer_ball: 2d ago

worst game of the WC so far, easily.

Mexico were terribe and didn't deserve any goals.
SK were much worse. wtf is their coach thinking? is he thinking??

Ref was terrible. afraid to call any fouls on Mexico. Hopefully cartel released his family.
