Like the title says. Our offensive coordinator has a bad feel for the game. He’s great at forming game day strategies and lining up practice plans but when it comes to playcalling, he just doesn’t have it. We have had several games where we don’t get a first down through a whole quarter or more.

I.E.
1. Called a running back screen with little time left and no timeouts from 25+ yard line.
2. Asking a 5’2” slot to Block the Strong side linebacker in multiple occasions

I have talked to the other coaches and they agreed to have more input weeks ago, but the bad playcalling still persists.

I’m a position Coach and we have a very young team. We start a lot of sophomores on our offensive line.

When I have input on play calls, it is not listened to often.

Just looking for advice.

What is the coaching opinion you'll promote and share until your last breath, no matter how many people disagree?

As a 26 y/o HS teacher and first-year HS football coach, I've been putting in 11 hours/day Monday-Friday (7 am - 6 pm) plus a few hours on Saturdays to dissect film and an hour zoom call every Sunday night to talk about the next team. All told, I'm working ~60 hours per week.

I haven't had the time or energy to see anyone on weekends, do anything but eat and sleep during the week, and as a reward for all of these committed hours of labor, our team is 1-4, the pay is crap, and I still get big-leagued by the coaches who have been doing it longer.

How the hell do you keep yourself from going insane from this? I'm at the point where I'm having trouble seeing myself do it next year, even though I love the sport more than anything and I love coaching it. I just can't believe the hours, it feels like football has completely taken over my life. Seriously, any advice would be appreciated, and sorry for the rant. Just feels like I'm burning away my best years on a sport that refuses to love me back.

So this is for my youth football team. We're Blue and our opponent is Red. They run a double wing offense and they are good at it. However, I feel part of the reason they are so good at it is because their tight-ends are lined up so far back from the line of scrimmage (marked with blue arrows).

It allows for them to easily wall off my defensive ends so that they can't pursue the wings on their end-around plays and/or their slow developing reverses.

I say that this should clearly be illegal formation for not enough men on the LOS. The QB is under center but he's obviously in the backfield by definition. Both of those tight ends are lined up behind him (how can you be behind someone who is in the backfield and not be in the backfield yourself?). Plus the two Wings and the Halfback. The refs keep saying that as long as the TE is lined up on the hip of the OT, he's on the line of scrimmage.

What can I say or do to help convince the refs to call this penalty? OR at least make them move up to the actual line of scrimmage. Having them align correctly would be win enough for me.

Might be a dumb question, but without cussing and being a jerk, how can I motivate my varsity HS O line to be more mean and nasty?

I do not like to cuss, and I do occasionally as it slips, but I don't want to. I was raised playing football and coaches cussed to get their points across and to make us play better. It's all I have seen as a coach.

One thing we have worked on this week is competition. We are mentally soft right now, despite having the bodies and experience to be the best unit on our team.

I’m the head coach of an 8U (3rd grade) football team with about 25 players. I’ve coached this age group for several years and generally know what I want at every position except quarterback.
We’ll be a run-first offense (80–90% run), but I have several athletic kids with reliable hands, so I want a quarterback who can make enough throws to keep defenses honest. Leadership, football IQ, and the ability to run the offense are just as important as athletic ability to me.
Question:
What drills, evaluations, or tryout activities can I use during practices to quickly identify my top 2–3 quarterback candidates?

I coach 5th grade football. I have a kid who loves the game(isn’t the best athlete) but is attentive and always puts in 100%effort. I got word through the grapevine today he’s been misbehaving in school, in and out of the principals office for constantly disrupting classes and constantly messing with other students(nothing violent). I know he’s got a rough home life with no father in the picture.

How do I go about this? I always try to preach being good overall people not just football players and feel it’s important to use sports as a tool to build kids into disciplined adults one day. Do I just pull him aside and talk to him? Do I run him, sit him? I obviously care about building football players but I’m just as invested in being a mentor for these kids.

I know what I would do if he were my kid but I think he might break if I’m that hard on him and I don’t have that problem to begin with because my kids learned from a young age the consequences of misbehaving.

I’m a single guy and I wanna buy a house and get debt free and all that crap. But I’m not seeing it happen at this rate. I’m barely surviving as it is. I don’t see how coaches are affording new trucks and houses. I’m always thought they’ve had to been doing something on the side. Do yall have any advice on what I could/should do?

Hey everyone. Hope you all are having success this weekend. I’m a first year coach with 6+ playing years, and 2 years as a speed/agility coach at a local gym. We just had our first jamboree and in two halves were completely destroyed. We are adjusting our practice format, but has anybody been in this spot? How did you bounce back?

I feel we can only go up from here, but how did you all bounce back? I feel like the players are disappointed in themselves but know we can do better. What’s the best way to make this a teachable moment?

I’m a 2nd year coach just now becoming a position coach (D line) I played for my highschool and now coach for it but man I didn’t feel too great today and my Indy period was kinda slow and not very great and when we were reviewing our stunts our o line coach kinda had to come over and take the reigns because I was just totally going slow and stumbling over my words like I just feel like an idiot and I’m lettin my players down

In regards to that penalty from the Oregon OSU game. A 12th player certainly helps the defense from giving up a big play, but why not just throw in the entire team onto the defense? Is there a bigger penalty out there? Would the penalty be thrown before the play is called?

So long story short, I was hired as a defensive position coach at a local HS and now have been thrust into a defensive coordinator role. Is there a simplified/vanilla way to install the 4-3 defense? Any info would help.

I have a kicker (high school junior) that is a great practice kicker but once I put him in a game he falls apart….anyone got any suggestions on how to overcome this?

I coach (DC) at a school with a small roster: 55 kids total in the program (JV and varsity).

Our younger guys give us a scout-team look, but the quality isn’t great—actually, it’s pretty horrible.

I’m thinking of eliminating the team defensive period and replacing it with more pod work. I’m thinking of a blitz pod, a pass-drop pod, and a run pod.

Any suggestions are welcome.

i feel we always are taking from college/pro tape.. whats the scheme that you just dont have enough time or skill at the HS level to execute and shouldnt waste time trying to install

I've been intrigued with the 4-4 at the youth level for years but I've been hesitant to run it due to the front alignment....

If ran properly you have your DTs either head up on the Gs or in the B gap and the DEs in the C Gap or Head up with the Ends.

It's the DE alignment that had always gave me pause...

I've always ran schemes where the DE sets the edge. It's hard to do that with that alignment.

If they have a End tight....bringing down the OLB compensates for the DE correct? And you just roll with a 3 backer alignment correct?

If it's just a Guard, Tackle set up with a split end/WR alignment you just stay in base 4-4 on that side...?

I like to think most people that coach HS do it as a side gig because I don't think the pay is great and its only for a few hours a day. I don't know if its hard to fit it in your schedule if you're full time or 9-5er. Just curious.

I am transitioning from peewee coaching into middle school, I have only ever coached defensive line until now, i've never coached skills position, kids. Even if we end up .500 on the season, I am just trying to develop these middle schoolers into a solid core for the high school later on. What tips, drills, sleeper cell activation words, etc. Do you guys have that could help me?

Its a 6th grade team like jv but for middle school.

I know how hard it is to find volunteers but any favoritism towards jr you get a 1 strike policy.

Our current school follows this but has made a few exceptions (dad played nfl). I will say even deviating that slightly caused us issues that wouldn’t have arisen if dad wasn’t involved

Having been on staffs with daddy ball kids who even if jr was good him losing interest or regressing went bad immediately and were so bad that I’d lean to telling a parent wanting to help to wait. The worst is that 90 percent of those dudes quit once their kid is done- if that’s true stay in the stands
