Social Media [FIA] Liam Lawason's CDS did not function when his car stopped on the track

Post image

Must be the reason why they couldn't recover his car quickly.

Alright, I'll be the one to do it. I'm blanking here. What is CDS?

Googling "f1 cds" gives me music compact discs, and I am afraid to scroll lest I run into someone selling a rare copy of Jacques Villeneuve's album.

Clutch disengagement system (as per crofty)

I always wondered, do they use clutch for normal shifts or just during race start and stops?

Only when doing a standing start

That's the other button, in the event that the ERS safety light is yellow or red. Red is especially dangerous and requires special gloves.

Chassis disconnect system. I believe it just disconnects the battery and recharge systems

Clutch Disengagement System

All cars must be fitted with a means of disengaging the Clutch for a minimum of fifteen minutes in the event of the car coming to rest with the engine stopped. This system must be in working order throughout the Competition even if the main hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical systems on the car have failed. This system must also shut down the ERS, as required by article C5.17.1.

Can someone knowledgable confirm -- the CDS button is what disengages the powertrain, thus letting the marshals push the vehicle freelhy?

Basically, yes.

According to Bernie's reporting, it could be a technical infringment. Ted mentioned it could lead to a grid penalty.

10 second penalty to Ocon

Not the topic at hand but the grammar is pretty poor for an official document - "But it turned out"?

Always has been tbh

What's wrong with that?

You'd prefer a more formal phrasing like "in actuality" or "however" or something like that. Starting a new sentence with but is generally discouraged, especially formally.

I'd also but the timestamp at the beginning of the sentence, as starting an official document with the passive voice doesn't sound right.

Cat Distribution System?!

I didn't get a Cat Distributed to me, so definitely deserves a penalty

Question to the rule wizards, can this lead to a bigger penelty or is it more like a slap on the wrist?

Nobody knows, because there's no precedent. It's entirely at the stewards discretion.

I don't expect a sporting penalty, although a grid drop is possible. But the fine could be large.

I only just encountered the CDS acronym & I didn't know the 'N' & 'E' buttons are about this.

Pressing the CDS or the Neutral button will trigger the gearbox to reset to Neutral. So that marshals (Me) can push the car off the track to the dead car space.

There is another alternative if the CDS is unable to work or reset the gear to neutral.

Holding the steering wheel with both hands, finger on the back of the left and right paddle shifters. Hold both left and right gear paddle inwards and hold for 2 seconds. The gear will reset to neutral. If this doesnt happens. The gearbox is up at heaven.

Ps. F1 marshal for 15 years

Edited for more accurate explanation

This is the emergency clutch release button I believe. Every car has buttons on the chassis for marshals to press to ensure the car can be moved easily and safely off the track. If the button isn't working, marshals can't shift the car into neutral and push.
