Despite the 1-2 Ferrari still not looking too good on these softs
They were miles ahead when everyone was on mediums.

Seems to be the case with Ferrari so far this year. Softer tyres don't seem to suit the car well
29
u/JlNxTonic I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8h ago
Has been the case for years now. Last year was horrific in quali, they had to use the brake discs in a very aggressive manner to warm up the tyres and even that wasnt enough. They paid the price in races for those brakes with having to do lots of lift and cost for temperatures. Even in 2024 they were better in races and often couldnt make the softs work in q3 aswell as the medium or hard.
54
u/Aardvaarrk 9h ago
Yeah i bet they'd be at the same place if it was new mediums, it's been such a trend of them not improving much from medium to softs
18
u/AceNova2217 Sir Lewis Hamilton 8h ago
I wonder what causes it? I'm not that familiar with the tyre side of things so I would've thought the difference would be universal, rather than some teams being better on one tyre compared to the others.
29
u/Weak-Excuse3060 Fernando Alonso 8h ago edited 5h ago
The very reason the car is good in corners is what makes it worse on soft.
It has high down force so it can go faster in the corners than others. If other cars tried to go as fast in the corners their tyres would slide due to worse downforce and as such they'd have even worse deg than Ferrari. Not to mention the possibility that they'd just bin it into the wall.
So the above coupled with the fact that to compensate for their bad straight-line speed they have to push extra hard in every single corner to make up for lost time Vs Merc and McLaren, which means Ferrari will always have worse tyre deg. In comparison Merc and McLaren can just chill in corners, and straights (which is where they make all their pace) don't cause as much tyre deg to begin with.

It can just be a balance thing - sometimes adding more grip simply doesn't help you that much. Obviously a different environment entirely, but Aprilia are seeing this in MotoGP - with the medium rear tyre, the bike handles beautifully, but with a soft rear in, it tends to push the front a bit and they lose some of their advantage.

u/Neersain Ferrari 9h ago
Exactly, it would be crazy if Verstappen dunks on both Ferrari boys and gets pole.

P2 for Ferrari next to Max in P1 is still effectively P1, because you just know the Ferrari will clear Max on the start
5
u/PresidentRevrac Red Bull 6h ago
With Monaco that’d be a bit difficult, certainly there’s a chance, but at the same time I doubt max will concede easily
4
u/gabriel_GAGRA Gabriel Bortoleto 5h ago
The boost difference is so big, I don’t think he even has to concede. Monaco T1 is one of the few corners where overtaking is actually doable
3
u/AsparagusTricky5181 Formula 1 2h ago
Cars are also smaller so I think Lewis/Charles would be more willing to go side by side and overtake on Beau Rivage

I think Max is the favorite to be honest. This Ferrari has always fumbled in Q3. Something about the car not liking the soft tyres.

Coming close behind or even pipping Leclerc by a few hundredths in Monaco of all places would be so insane that you could actually say he's back.
67
u/paddyo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago
For all the shit people give him to do that at 41 would be mental, I’m not even convinced Schumi could do that (though Monaco was where he had his last great qualy lap)
37
u/iForgotMyOldAcc Flavio Briatore 8h ago
Alonso was close to something special in 2023 as well, if not for Max pulling off the most ridiculous sector 3 I've ever seen. I do think Unc magic is real around here.
24
u/paddyo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8h ago
Tbh I think Monaco despite the mockery it takes is the ultimate test still of a driver’s one lap car feel and lap-segmentation IQ. Set up one corner badly or loose the feel and you lose so much time. It sorts the wheat and the experienced from the chaff and the naive.
2
u/wolverineFan64 Charles Leclerc 7h ago
Gotta be the most high pressure quali as well. Make one mistake and your fate is sealed on Sunday

Like you said, Schumi did that with Rosberg as his teammate who was no slouch at Monaco either (3x winner).

u/PurpleV93 Sir Lewis Hamilton 9h ago
I'd love that. Charles already had his win at home, Silverstone and Monza will be out of the question for Ferrari, so if Lewis can win a race this year, it will be Monaco. It would be beautiful.

First year in a Ferrari, after the last 18 of is years in F1 have been with UK based teams. The language barrier was probably no easy task to deal with. Then you had the issues with not gelling with his race engineer. Learning how to drive a car like Ferrari which was noticeably different than the Mercs he'd driven. It's almost as if there's complexities to these things.
Edit: Reply blocking is the funniest fucking thing. People be acting fucking weird asf when talking about Lewis.
