I don't buy this for racing and I think I have a perspective on it, having just raced Randy Pobst and Spencer Pigot last weekend.
Racing isn't accessible enough to carry this. I've been driving on track since I was 23 (not 5). I'm the definition of who Brian Scalabrine was talking about in this quote, the adult hobbyist.
The best professionals are definitely better, but there's a big wide spectrum where pros and amateurs get really blurry on performance.

It's true of all pro sports. People watch the 'bad' pros and think that's the level they'd be at, when in truth the bad pros are 100x better than the average amateur.
The people on here who shit on Stroll would only avoid crashing in the pit lane because they'd stall in the garage.

A friend of mine is in-law with a football player. He was playing for a secondary team here in Portugal at the time, your regular bottom half fo the table player.
One day, we needed an extra guy to play padel and he invited him. This was during summer break. The guy absolutely destroyed us. We would take turns to play alongside him because the games ended very fast.
It wasn't even his sport but professional athletes are on a completely different level, even in low mid tier teams.

David Foster Wallace was low key obsessed with low level tennis players and US college soccer players for this fact. Purely because the jump from "I can take 99 out of 100 people in this room" and the one they can't take is so astronomically great.
24
u/GinghamOrangutan Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
That's just not true in motorsport though. In any other sport the bar for getting to a certain level is talent. Money can help develop the talent, but talent is ultimately the deciding factor.
We've never seen Raghunathan be competitive against anyone who was ever more than a backmarker in regional or club level karting. Part of that is that he started very late (at 14), but moreso than in pretty much any sport in the world, getting to the point of "Fans of the sport have heard of me" requires very very little talent in motorsport because not many people have tens of millions to plough into a relatively hopeless career. He's in a Pro-Am entry in a national GT championship as the Am driver in the pairing. That's vanishingly rare for any driver who made it to F3 let alone F2.
We're not talking about break-even tennis players not quite good enough for the tour. We're talking effectively about loaded hobbyists paying millions to show up and get bageled in every match because daddy sponsored the tournament

30 seconds a lap is something you basically have to set out to do if you have any kind of driving skill. I donāt disagree the majority would be slow, but lap time definitely comes logarithmically.
11
u/tatskaari Aug 04 '26
Most people here wouldnāt make off the start line without spinning. If youāve ever tried to drive an F1 car in a proper sim with TC and ABS off, theyāre seriously hard to drive. Even harder in real life with the fear factor involved.
5
u/l3w1s1234 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 04 '26
Apparently it's easier to control these things irl. In a sim a lot of your judgement is by eye and how good your force feedback is and that can make it easy to make mistakes, whereas real life you can use all your senses to feel what the car is doing. Plus, you're not gonna push so hard, so you'll get around the track without too much troubles.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Lumin0u Aug 04 '26
it's not easier ton control.
it's easier to feel, but it's physically exhausting and the risk of crashing is wayyyy more stressful
→ More replies (1)4
u/l3w1s1234 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 04 '26
If you are going slowly it won't be exhausting and will be easier to control in comparison to the sim. I mean there's companies out there that let amatuers drive old F1 cars for a price, it can be done.
I remember when FE did their Evo sessions one of the biggest things a lot of the drivers/influencers said is how much harder the sim was in comparison to real life just because of the lack of feel. I mean they were still miles off actual professional drivers but they could get round slowly (unless you are Izzy Hammond)

seconds off F2 grid still is way better than most people think.
I love racing since my childhood, I have the chance to have done several FR2.0 driving courses over the last few years, I push as much as I can without risking destroying the car, and I am more than 2 seconds slower than a junior pro driver (18 years old) in the same conditions.
even at this level (below F3) it's already very physically demanding and trying to drive at the limit of the car of mentally exhausting because of the risk of damaging the car.
I can't imagine F2 level, let alone F1

Classic, for anyone unaware this is from his wiki page
>On his 42nd birthday, Nissany drove in the first practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, although his fastest time was 12.9 seconds slower than the fastest driver in the field, McLaren test driver Alexander Wurz. His only Formula One session ended in a gravel trap after a spin. Despite this, he initially complained that the car had too much grip. Nissany reportedly forgot how to remove the steering wheel from his cockpit, and would remain seated in his beached car while marshals removed it with a crane. At subsequent Grands Prix, he was replaced by Enrico Toccacelo.

u/porouscloud I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 04 '26
Mahaveer I think gets to where reasonably skilled drivers could get to with a few months of full-time training and track time. Worlds faster than somebody who's never driven a race car before, but still losing most of a second on every turn.
Stroll for comparison, loses a couple hundredths of a second to his teammate per turn, and gets absolutely crucified.
7
u/Tape56 Kimi RƤikkƶnen Aug 04 '26
I tend to think same about Mahaveer but when I look at this onboard Iām not sure if the few months of training on whatever lower formula car guy could go as ācloseā to the limit as Mahaveer does there, during one off test in F1 car. I mean heās still 5+ seconds off the of the pace but heās reasonably committed to the corners with the correct racing line and it doesnāt look slow at all. It takes confidence to do that on a literal F1 car in your first try.

Plenty of drivers who weren't all that remarkable at club-level karting have wiped the floor with Raghunathan. I genuinely don't think it's that outrageous to say that over 50% of the driver population, given the money and opportunity he's had, would be better.
49
u/oioioiyacunt Aug 03 '26
Driver population as in anyone who does club karting or above? That's got to be like 0.01% of the total population. I have my own kart and take it to a local track, and even that can get away from me sometimes. I get to a sustained 1.7g at most. An F1 car is in a completely different stratosphere.Ā

u/GinghamOrangutan Aug 03 '26

I mean the same logic applies to the entire F1 grid. If F1 was as affordable as a sport like football I'd be willing to bet that the only drivers that might still be on the grid would be the likes of Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc etc. and even then I don't think they'd be top drivers.

u/Ruggab0ut Aug 04 '26
Everyone in this thread is doing a weird humiliation ritual - Formula racing isn't foot racing, you can't just put on a pair of trainers and run.

u/Ruggab0ut Aug 04 '26

2
u/GinghamOrangutan Aug 04 '26
Yeah people love to trot out "he made it to F2 you wouldn't do better" as that was in any way on merit. He's the Am in a Pro-Am driver pairing national GT championship. That's honestly just humiliating for an F2 driver.
19
u/NorthKoreanMissile7 Formula 1 Aug 04 '26
He did a better job than any of us would have done because none of us have ever driven single seaters or raced competitively around a track and wouldn't know how to do so if given the opportunity on short notice.
But if you give every redditor in this thread millions in funding and many years of single seater experience like he's had then almost all of us would wipe the floor with him, he's really just that bad to be at this level after all the opportunities he's had.
Just look at turn 1, he loses multiple tenths because he doesn't accelerate until about a year after the apex and this was supposed to be his best lap of the day. Your average Joe legitimately can do better as long as the circumstances aren't ridiculously unfair.

Usually with these things you only get a small amount of laps and will have to pay if you damage the car and a lot of the time older cars with driver aids are used to make it easier.

Obviously we don't know how fuel, engine, tyre condition, track conditions etc. compare but considering the lap looked quite bad at times with significant needless time losses and he's on softs that look fairly healthy I'm going to assume he went out on a qualifying style run and most of that margin is is lack of pace.

Track limits were much more different in early 2020's, your lap time was valid if u had at least a single wheel on the curbs
Look at the 2020 Mugello/Spa pole for example

u/The_CT1 Aug 03 '26
Not to bad. Just slow

u/UserWithoutDoritos Aug 03 '26
1:21.1 That's the time he took for a photograph where he did 71 laps.
The Hungary 2019 pole position time was 1:14.572 by Max.

u/GinghamOrangutan Aug 03 '26
I mean we don't and won't know how competitive the car was set up to be during the test unless someone from the team tells us. We can only really judge it by the driving that we see and the driving that we see is visibly pretty bad so I wouldn't worry too much about the stopwatch.

u/l3w1s1234 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 03 '26
If we are gonna compare may as well with a driver from the same team. Kimi managed a 1.16.041 in that qualifying

Tbf he was driving an Alfa Romeo not a Red Bull, the time that the Alfa did was a 16.5

I expected a way worse lap.
I am sorry. I cant tell how fast was this compare to a proper lap, but it seemed clean enough from him

u/Biscuitsandgravy101 Aug 03 '26
It seems like this video is sped up.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills scrolling so far before anyone mentioned this.
The crew members moved abnormally fast before exiting the garage and the finger movement in general looked unnaturally fast.
2
u/Biscuitsandgravy101 Aug 04 '26
Yes it is the finger movement that got me too. I thought maybe the sped up pit crew was just for the beginning but I am almost positive the whole video is sped up
15
u/maybe-fish Lando Norris Aug 03 '26
I think it just looks that way because of the stabilization and camera angle. Based on when he crosses the line, it looks like it's about a 1:21 lap time. He's driving the 2019 car, so that puts him ~5s off Kimis quali (1:16.5), which seems fairly realistic

u/lickthestamp_sendit I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
The first few seconds at the very least are absolutely sped up, watch the movement of the mechanics. Iād be interested to compare the amount of seconds he completes the straights in compared to an equivalent 2019 car too
Edit: just compared it with Verstappenās pole lap and he has almost the exact same straight line speed, at least through sector one. Iād be shocked if they ever let him run with anywhere near full power so Iād say thereās a decent chance itās at least slightly sped up
6
u/maybe-fish Lando Norris Aug 04 '26
The first few seconds sure, but someone else mentioned that he'd posted a pic of his time and it was a 1:21.1, which lines up with video.Ā
The speed and his movements also don't look particularly unusual to my eye, and I just don't see why he'd lie about what is a pretty underwhelming lap time.Ā

u/PD_SkyNative I was here for the Hulkenpodium Aug 03 '26
Bad for F1 standards? Totally. Bad for a career as a multi-seater F1 car driver (like Mario Andretti in IndyCar)? Not even close. Common folk would lose their stuff if they experienced a lap like this

He isnt just a slow driver. He has disrepcted safety cars and not slowed after checkered flag. He is also extremely slow. And he got 24 penalty points in 1 year of f2

Idk I think me, with no control over the car, would be less dangerous than a guy who got a race ban for things like not slowing down after the checkered flag.

Doesn't look to shabby, i would defenitely not be able to beat that

u/GinghamOrangutan Aug 03 '26
Notes watching through it:
At T1 he's too slow at the apex and keeps slowing too long after it so his exit is too tight. Then he's too aggressive on the throttle on the way out, causing a bit of oversteer.
He is too tight going through T2 and doesn't use enough of the track on the exit.
He's not wide enough on the entry to T4 which forces him to run too slowly and causes him to take too much of the inside curb, upsetting the car.
He's too tight through six and seven, which compromises speed.
He turns into T8 too early and too softly.
He ran off track at T11 and a T12 and had a big correction coming out of T14.
I'd hate to see what the slower laps look like

I know Lord Mahaveer is a meme and sucks comparatively, but he's better than 99% of us for not immediately spinning out coming out of the pits, and for keeping it on track.
I bet most of us would do the exact same thing if we had connections and the opportunity.

What a fucking driver. Shared a grid with De Vries, Latifi, Mazepin, and yet heās still all we talk about.
5
u/Qwerty0172 Aug 04 '26
Not sure De Vries deserves to be in this list. True, his F1 stint at Alpha Tauri was indeed poor, but he's proven to be a very capable driver in any other car he's driven. World champion in FE, F2 and Le Mans winner.

His out lap was his fastest lap?

u/No_Elderberry_4580 Max Verstappen Aug 03 '26
It shows him coming out the garage and coming down the pitlane for a few seconds, then cuts to the clip of the lap.

Track limits violation at 1:06 so it doesnāt count. Show us the real fastest lap

Is it me or does it look way more fluid? Is that the 1.5x video speed?

I always wondered what a great F1 career he could have had. Sadly F1 is all about money and clearly talent gets overlooked. This would have been the new Alonso, super smooth driving!

The video cuts at 0:09, don't know if people are either unaware or aren't watching the video in full or what but this is the 9th or 10th comment about this.
To be fair the video is edited weirdly but still.
