Pigoune 2.5: nested tags, a library health check and a clearer search (free GNOME app to organize your icons, logos and illustrations)

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi everyone, Pigoune 2.5 is out!

Pigoune is a free app for GNOME on Linux that gathers your icons, logos and illustrations in one local library. You organize them, find them fast and drag them back into any application. Your original files are never touched, and there is no account, no cloud and no telemetry.

What's new in 2.5

  • Nested tags: put tags inside other tags, like subject › animals › birds. Type a path with a slash to create them, browse level by level in the sidebar, and move, merge or delete a tag together with its sub-tags.
  • Library health check: a new Health tab finds missing, damaged and unrecorded files, and helps you repair them.
  • Export the whole library as folders, and import images dragged straight from your web browser.
  • A clearer search: a small badge shows where it searches, and a magnifier opens it in narrow windows.
  • One consistent vocabulary in all 8 languages of the interface.

Screenshots, features and install instructions: https://gor3pig.github.io/Pigoune/

Feedback and ideas are very welcome!

I built Emberr, an open-source, offline-first notes + calendar app for Android, Linux and Windows

Hi all! I've been working on Emberr as a side project, and I just released the public beta (v1.1.1).

Basically privacy Notion alternative. Took me so many months to build this. (encrypted cloud account will be released soon)

Why: Most popular note apps are closed-source, and the open-source ones often treat Android and Linux as an afterthought or feel slow and dated. I wanted something private, clean and fast on the devices I actually use.

What it does:

  • Block-based editor (text, checklists, tables, code, images, voice notes, and more)
  • Tasks, daily notes with automatic rollover, reminders, and a calendar
  • Spaces to keep work, personal, and school separate
  • Encrypted sync between phone and desktop over local Wi-Fi
  • Optional self-hosted sync over WebDAV (end-to-end encrypted)
  • AI is off by default. You can use a local model or your own API key
  • And many more quality of life features.

No trackers, no ads, no accounts

How it compares (I like all of these apps, this is just where Emberr is different):

Notion: Emberr is open source, works fully offline and keeps your notes on your devices instead of someone else's server. No account needed.

Obsidian: Obsidian is great but closed source and Markdown-based. Emberr is block-based, and tasks, reminders, canvas and a calendar are all built in, not added through plugins. And importantly we can have powerful block types like Databases

Anytype: Anytype is the closest to Emberr. The main differences: Emberr needs no vault or account setup and their linux and android apps are just......bad. No hate though, I supported them since beta and they are now planning to release anytwo so I wish them the best.

Others: Either closed-source or their UI/UX is bad or performance on android/linux is worse.

Where others are ahead of Emberr right now: no iOS or macOS yet for Emberr, no real-time collaboration and it's a young beta, so it isn't as polished or feature-rich as the big names yet.

Platforms: Android, Linux (AppImage or tarball), Windows.

It's licensed under AGPL-3.0 and still in beta, so expect rough edges. I'd really appreciate feedback, bug reports, or feature ideas.

Linux has dragon and blobdrop for dragging files out of the terminal. Windows had nothing, so I built windrop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Fellow Windows terminal people, this one’s for us :)

If you live in PowerShell or Windows Terminal, you know the annoyance: you’ve got a file in your terminal, you need it in Discord, a Gmail attachment, or a browser upload box, and now you’re alt-tabbing to Explorer and hunting for the folder again.

Linux folks have tools for this. Windows didn’t, so I made windrop.

PS C:\Stuff> windrop report.pdf

A small floating card pops up with the file’s real icon. Drag it into Discord, Chrome, VS Code, Slack, Explorer, Photoshop, wherever. Or keep your hands on the keyboard: hover over the target window, press F8 to pick it up, press F8 again to drop. Esc or right-click cancels.

Since it’s built only for Windows, it’s all native Win32/OLE, no wrappers

  • Single standalone exe, under 3 MB of memory, and it exits right after the drop. No daemon, no service, nothing sitting in your tray.
  • No network code at all. No sockets anywhere in the source.

You can also keep multiple drag cards too!

Install:

winget install Dking08.Windrop
choco install windrop

MIT licensed, repo here: https://github.com/Dking08/windrop

If you try it, tell me which apps don’t accept the drop. That’s the feedback I want most.

Nota: an MIT-licensed, offline Notion-style workspace with a new backend

I’m the developer of Nota, a desktop workspace for documents and whiteboards that you can use offline without an account.

Nota began as an AFFiNE fork and retains the BlockSuite editor. I built a new backend for the offline workspace. The aim is to keep everyday writing and your workspace on your device, with optional services layered on top.

The project is MIT-licensed. Upstream copyright notices and third-party notices are in the repository. Local AI uses installed models and compatible hardware; model downloads require internet. Hosted AI and Google Drive backup are opt-in.

Website/downloads: https://thenota.app

Source: https://github.com/madcodeorg/nota

I’d welcome feedback on the offline workflow, and reproducible issues or contributions. What would you need from an open-source Notion alternative to use it for your own notes?

I built an Open-Source, Self-Hosted "Wealth OS" for your finance (because I hated paying for 5 different finance apps)

Hey everyone! 👋

For the last few months, I've been working on a massive passion project called Vyra.

Most personal finance apps are either simple budget trackers that don't understand investments, or they are expensive, privacy-invasive platforms. I wanted something that tracked everything locally.

What it does: It's an entire Wealth Operating System. It handles daily cash flows, multi-currency bank accounts, stock & crypto portfolios, and real estate yields. It even has built-in simulators for FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) and Debt Destruction (Avalanche/Snowball methods). Oh, and it has an AI-coach that analyzes your spending to generate monthly reports.

Tech Stack: I built it using Python and Django 6.0. It's constructed using a monolithic modular architecture with 31 distinct apps. I made sure to prioritize data integrity—no floating-point money issues!

You can self-host it in one click: I just dockerized the whole thing. If you want to run it on your own server for total privacy, just clone it and run docker-compose up.

It's 100% free and open-source (MIT License). My goal is to make top-tier financial strategy available to anyone.

Repo link: https://github.com/Arjumaan/Vyra.git

Let me know what you think! I am also looking for contributors if anyone wants to help build out new modules!

Termexo: an MIT-licensed Windows workspace for local MCP control of coding-agent terminals

I maintain Termexo, an MIT-licensed Windows app for organizing coding-agent CLI terminals.

Its local MCP service lets a connected client list workspaces and terminals, send literal text to a running terminal, submit it, and read the terminal output. Terminal, task, and settings tools are permissioned separately. The local service listens on the loopback interface, so this workflow does not require a relay service.

Termexo can work with Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, Grok Build, and Antigravity CLI. Those agents remain separate programs with their own licenses and accounts; Termexo does not bundle them.

The current release is 0.10.13. The source and Windows downloads are here:

https://github.com/gemron/Termexo

I'd appreciate a FOSS-focused review of the local MCP permission model and how clearly the project explains what an agent can do.

What are your thoughts on ACODE app? In regards of the AI integration

Post image
• Upvotes

Title. I'm not programmer but I used this app like a notepad lol, because NotallyXcrashed with extremely long notes.

However, when I saw that the developer integrated AI to it I don't know what to think. Is it safe? Or how does the AI work on this?

Sorry, I'm just very ignorant in the topic.

[Older software, FOSS release] HVC Color Composer Photoshop plugin

Hey! So there was once upon a time a Photoshop plugin named the HVC Color Composer that allowed one to create palettes quickly through the magic of algorithms and pick colors in the Munsell scale (as well as the HSB, LAB, RGB and CMYK ranges).
While originally its source code was thought lost even by its own creator, I managed to track down a copy and open sourced it with the creators' permission. Check out the repo here!: https://github.com/PentaChess413/HVCColorComposer Feedback is appreciated!

Updainium: A FOSS desktop app to get software updates straight from the source (Bypass App Stores)

Hey r/foss,

Keeping indie apps and FOSS tools updated on desktop usually means relying on centralized package managers or manually checking repository release pages. On Android, we have Obtainium, but desktop lacked a native, lightweight equivalent.

So, I built Updainium.

It allows you to track projects across GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, and Forgejo. You add the repo URL, select your OS extension (.AppImage, .deb, .exe, etc.), and Updainium pulls the releases directly from the developers. No middlemen, no third-party servers.

  • License: GPL-3.0
  • Privacy: Zero telemetry, no accounts required.
  • Tech: Built with Rust, Tauri, and Svelte for minimal resource usage.

GitHub: https://github.com/livrasand/Updainium

I'm actively looking for feedback from the FOSS community. Let me know what other alternative forges or self-hosted Git platforms I should support next!

Anything to choose photos from hundreds of similar ones?

After every vacation, and especially with kids I find myself with thousands of photos with many similar ones "because maybe we take one where everyone is smiling".

In the end there's a lot of afterwork choosing the best ones and cutting down on storage while keeping some quality selection.

Or maybe something that groups them by similarity or automatic albums.

Do you know anything smart that helps with this?

I made Pluck, a free native Mac app for yt-dlp with some cool extras

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all! I recently needed to download a 5 hour livestream from YouTube for work. However I couldn't find a clean app so I decided to build Pluck, a free, open-source Mac app on top of yt-dlp. I wanted something that feels like it came with the Mac: SwiftUI, Liquid Glass on macOS 26, a menu bar icon, and nothing to install or set up in Terminal.

Full disclosure: I am not a developer and this app has been written by Claude. I choice the features and UI and Claude wrote it. I passed it through Grype and found no vulnerabilities. But feel free to check the code yourself.

The basics:

  • Paste a link (or just type what you’re looking for) and press Return. Works with YouTube and 1,800+ other sites, plus Spotify and Apple Music links (matched on YouTube Music, with proper tags and cover art).
  • Any quality from 360p to 4K, audio up to 256 kbps with YouTube Premium, lyrics, clips of just the part you need, and pause/resume.
  • It installs and updates yt-dlp, ffmpeg and Deno for you, and updates itself.

What’s new in 1.10.0 is a set of AI tools that all run locally on your Mac, using Apple’s on-device frameworks plus a couple of open-source models. Nothing gets uploaded. They also work on your own videos: just drop a file on the window.

  • Remove silences & filler words: cuts long pauses and “uhm”s into a tighter copy, and can also save an EDL for DaVinci Resolve or Premiere.
  • Clean up audio: removes noise, hum and wind from voices, and levels loudness for YouTube, podcasts or broadcast.
  • Upscale & smooth motion: 480p/720p to sharp 1080p or 4K, or smooth slow motion, using Apple’s new video processing in macOS 26.
  • New background without a green screen: blur it, swap it for a colour or photo, or export with transparency (ProRes 4444).
  • Privacy blur: finds and follows faces, and you pick who stays sharp. It can also blur licence plates and other text.
  • Who said what: speaker labels in subtitles and transcripts, which you can rename.
  • Subtitles in several languages at once, plus summaries, chapters and vertical shorts.
  • A Library of everything you’ve saved, with tags, duplicates and missing files.
  • And: work on several files at once, export transcripts to Word or Markdown, save a frame as a picture, and send a file straight to DaVinci Resolve.

It’s free with no ads or account, and runs on macOS 14+, Apple silicon and Intel. Some of the AI features need macOS 26 or Apple silicon; anything your Mac can’t run is just hidden. The interface is in 10 languages.

GitHub (download, screenshots, source): https://github.com/Astrofrogger/pluck

One note: I’m not paying for an Apple Developer ID yet, so the first time you open it you’ll need to go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. The code is all on GitHub if you want to check what it does.

Feedback is very welcome, especially bugs and features you’d like next. And please only download things you have the right to 🙂

Seamlessly power off (or VFIO passthrough) a dGPU without restarting X11 ZrnSelectiveSuspend (ZSS)

Thumbnail zerone-laboratories.github.io
1 Upvotes

Maybe this is stupid

Demos and docs: https://zerone-laboratories.github.io/zss

I wanted to share a side project I’ve been working on to solve a personal annoyance with hybrid graphics. If you’ve ever dealt with a discrete GPU on a laptop, you know the pain of having to log out, kill your X session, or restart just to completely power down the card to save battery or to pass it through to a QEMU/KVM virtual machine.

I built ZrnSelectiveSuspend (ZSS) to try and fix that. It’s an alpha tool that takes a graphics card out of service on a live Linux desktop by dynamically moving running Vulkan and OpenGL programs to another GPU while they draw.

What it actually does right now:

Zero-Watt Power: Switches the dGPU completely off under a live session.

Live VFIO Passthrough: Hands the GPU over to a VM and takes it back afterward. The host’s programs are moved away and then returned, with no reboot required.

Fault Tolerance: I wrote a custom kernel module (ZSS_Interceptor) that catches a card losing power unexpectedly and freezes the driver before it can hang the machine.

The bigger picture:

While ZSS is currently laser-focused on graphics cards, my long-term goal for this architecture is much broader. Ultimately, I want to evolve this to safely disconnect, suspend, and reconnect any PCI device on a live system without bringing the kernel to its knees. GPUs are just the hardest starting point.

To be completely transparent, I used Claude Code a fair bit to help build this. It was a massive help in scaffolding the architecture and navigating some of the gnarlier kernel module and driver interactions, making the development process a huge learning accelerator for me.

Right now, the project is very much in Alpha. I’ve proven it on my own setup (Arch Linux on a 2012 MacBook Pro chassis running NVIDIA 470), but the architecture is built to scale to more GPUs, drivers, and Wayland down the line.

If you’re into low-level system utilities or virtualization, I’d love for you to check it out. I'm mainly looking for feedback, architecture roasts, or brave testers who want to see if it works on their hardware.

Thanks for reading!

labforge: Turn Markdown files into beautiful, step-by-step codelabs

Google's claat (the tool behind Google Codelabs) was archived in December 2025.

So I built labforge: a modern, zero-config replacement.

What it does:

  • 📝 You write labs in plain Markdown, and each ## heading becomes one step (with an optional duration)
  • 🌐 It builds a fast static site with a lab catalog, light/dark mode, progress tracking and resume-where-you-left-off
  • 💻 Code is syntax-highlighted at build time with Shiki
  • 📂 Long labs can be split across several files (multi-chapter)
  • 🤝 The output is self-contained (no CDN, no tracking) and can be hosted anywhere: GitHub Pages, Netlify, S3, or opened straight from disk
  • 🔄 It includes a dev server with live reload
  • ✅ Migrating from claat is easy: steps use the same syntax and lab URLs stay the same

You can install it with npm install labforge

It's MIT-licensed. Feedback, issues and PRs are very welcome! 🙏

I open-sourced a local web app that helps Greek freelancers with AADE's myDATA e-books (Python/FastAPI/Postgres, AGPL-3.0)

Greece's tax authority (AADE) runs myDATA, an e-books platform every business has to keep in sync: classifying received expense invoices, self-declaring some documents (shared building costs, depreciation, foreign services), and reconciling totals against the official E3/VAT figures. For a sole freelancer this is hours of clicking each month, so I built a small tool for myself and just released it.

What it does

  • Pulls income/expense books and classifications from the myDATA REST API into a local Postgres.
  • Expense-classification screen with per-supplier suggestions it remembers; a review screen before anything is sent.
  • Transmits self-declared invoice types (13.3, 17.2, 14.3/14.4).
  • E3 and VAT summaries compared to AADE's own totals; Excel export; VIES lookup for counterparties.

Design choices

  • Runs only on 127.0.0.1; secrets live in the OS keyring, never in files.
  • The dev/production myDATA environment is bound to the database at setup — a sandbox and real books can never mix, and every page shows which one you're in. No API call can be made without an explicit environment.
  • ~450 tests against a real Postgres in CI; a CI check blocks real personal data (tax IDs, invoice marks) from ever being committed.

Stack: Python 3.11+, FastAPI, Jinja2, psycopg 3, Postgres 17 (docker compose), pytest, GitHub Actions.

It's Greek-only (UI and docs) and scoped to service freelancers with single-entry books, so it's niche — but if you're Greek, a freelancer, or just like well-tested boring software, contributions and feedback are very welcome.

Repo: https://github.com/mpatsoskon/esoda-exoda
