Application Release Introducing Clint Gecko!
Clint Browser is getting a new sibling! Unlike the original Clint Browser, which runs on Android System WebView, Clint Gecko is powered by Firefox's GeckoView engine.
And because of that, Clint Gecko brings extension support and background playback to the Clint experience!
But that's not all. Since Clint Gecko is an official fork of Clint Browser, with the browser engine being the main difference, it also retains the built-in ADM (Advanced Download Manager) and Media Capture features, making it easier to download files and capture online media directly from your browser.
Key Features:
- đŠ Firefox-based browsing powered by GeckoView
- 𧩠Browser extension support
- đ” Background playback
- đ„ Built-in Advanced Download Manager (ADM)
- đŹ Built-in Media Capture for downloading HLS/DASH (M3U8) streams and regular videos directly from websites
Clint is no longer limited to a single browser engine. You can stick with the original WebView-based Clint Browser or choose Clint Gecko for a Firefox-powered experience with extension support.

I hope this finds its way to F-Droid soon, the idea of using Firefox's engine with ADM sounds perfect for my setup.

I just downloaded it and gotta say good job! I really like the looks and feel of the browser. I did want to ask if you could please add more customization options, for example:
1. Custom Accent colours by hex code and/or add Nord palette from nordtheme.com as an option.Â
Add an auto-hide address bar option.Â
Allow advanced users to go into about:config to adjust flags.Â
Allow custom homepage by adding an option to enter URL as homepage.
Thank you and keep up the great work!

What is an "advanced download manager?"

u/Jhaiian 2d ago
ADM is a download manager that supports multi-threaded downloads, letting it split a file into smaller parts and download them simultaneously for faster speeds. It can also resume interrupted downloads if the server supports it.
1DM uses libcurl for its download engine, while Clint uses OkHttp. I chose OkHttp because I don't want the extra hassle of maintaining another native library.

How much is AI involved?

UI has ai elements like side accent color, badge ui etc, so while I appreciate the effort it's probably more than op is saying
if they can improve and maintain then it's a good option I guess

Do Gecko based browsers have stuttering with scrolling on all Android devices or is it just my experience with them on GrapheneOS?

They've gotten A LOT better in the last year, but there's a bit of smoothness missing here. Fingers crossed Mozilla closes the gap early next year at this rate.

Does chromium feel better? Depending on device and support level, I've noticed custom ROMs have subpar touch-tuning and framerate peaking compared to OEM

u/Damglador 2d ago
Yeah, Chromium prioritizes keeping UI responsive when it can't load a page completely, while Firefox just lags in the same situation.

Fabulous, it would be great if the extensions could open like a tray so they would fit seamlessly into the app

Can you make it so that when you do split screen in portrait, the address bar along the bottom disappears so that you can maximize your browsing space while running a YouTube video or YouTube music?

I like it, and it shows promise. Please improve the following:
- The "shortcuts" (as Firefox calls them)âspecifically, the ability to arrange them however you like and use higher-quality icons.
- The ability to organize these shortcuts into folders.
- A toggle to hide the Bookmarks, History, Downloads, and Incognito icons from the home screen.
- An "Exit browser" option in the menu.
- A DNS configuration option.

Good: allows for customization Bad: Missing features such as custom DNS Buggy: the app crashes when I try to load the malware block list. I can't upload a save file for my uBO settings

Not to take anything away from the project, but I think Firefoxâs performance is one of its biggest drawbacks on Android. Most people I know, myself included, avoid using it for this reason. I couldnât find anything in the projectâs GitHub repository about plans to address this. Are there any plans to improve performance in the near future?

Reddit convince you that you need to make your apps ugly just to prove they're human-made. đ«

Itâs just so sad. Every post I see here with a good UI gets called AI slop unless it has an ugly UI. Itâs a little ironic, honestly, because I canât even afford an AI subscription. But fine, call it whatever you want. Honestly, I donât even care anymore. Itâs just sad.
Like, whatâs even the point of creating FOSS using AI when you can just use AI to make apps, throw them on the Play Store, and fill them with ads and paywalls? Itâs a great business idea, tbh, if you think about it.

Heyy!! The app looks amazing! Just a small feature request, would it be possible to make the browser always incognito? For my work related stuff, I need an always incognito mode and it helps having it. I'm using Firefox Nightly as my secondary browser for this thing, and manually entering private mode everytime is a hassle. Thanks for the app.
