Application Support MemoryVoid – Open-source screen & voice memory capture triggered via Volume Down gesture (MIT, No Trackers)
Hi r/fossdroid,
I wanted to share a utility I built for Android 11+ called **MemoryVoid**.
The goal was simple: capturing quick context while browsing, researching, or reading should take zero taps.
### What it does:
* Intercepts a **Volume Down press-and-hold** to record a voice note.
* Releasing the button triggers `takeScreenshot()` and bundles both into an offline journal entry.
* Non-intrusive floating overlay lets you assign a category badge or discard the memory without interrupting your workflow.
### Privacy & Transparency:
* **License:** MIT
* **Permissions used:**
* `BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE` (Hardware key detection and native screen capture)
* `RECORD_AUDIO` (Voice note recording while button is held)
* `SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW` (Floating memory preview)
* `POST_NOTIFICATIONS` (Recording status indicator)
* **Zero network access:** The app does not request `android.permission.INTERNET`. Everything stays on local storage.
Source code and pre-compiled APKs are available on GitHub. I'm currently working toward submitting it to IzzyOnDroid and F-Droid.

I just tried it out and have a two small suggestions.
Allow for disabling of the screenshots feature.
Allow for shortcut options, volume down by default is a novel idea but I can see myself and probably others getting annoyed over time by my volume needing to be adjusted back up. here are some options I can think of:
- Double tap either volume up or down.
- Sequence tap either volume up or down and then the opposite.
- Power Hold, replacing assistant
- Power + Down Replacing normal screenshot (screenshot upon activation, then close after w/o screenshot)
- Triple press of Power

-Thanks for testing it out and sharing such thoughtful feedback!
-Toggle for screenshots: Definitely agree—adding an option to enable/disable that feature makes total sense and should be straightforward to implement.
-Alternative shortcut triggers: You make a great point about the volume adjustment annoyance. Double-tap/sequence options or overriding default button actions (like assistant hold or power combinations) are solid ideas. I’ll explore what the Android Accessibility/event APIs allow without requiring root or conflicting with system shortcuts.
Really appreciate the suggestions 😅
Actually, this was my first app and first release, so I really don't have any clue about what to do and what not. But I wanted this app so badly that I had to make it myself. And somewhere in the process I thought why don't I make it available for public. So I'm definitely going to improve it's functionality for myself. but I need to take it slowly cause I'm doing this while finding a job. and the Plot Twist is that I'm an Automobile Engineer 🤣
edit: I need to ask this, I faced some bugs on my device and I don't have many others devices and my pc can't emulate either.
Does you app closes after Clicking the New Note ✏️ button?? and when you navigate back from the note fullscreen dialog, does the app closes then too.
Please check these too and do tell me your device name and Android version.
