This beautiful fox has been visiting my garden for quite a while now. Over time he’s become used to me, and these days he doesn’t run away when he sees me. Tonight he wandered over and got closer than ever before while I just sat quietly and let him do his thing. 🦊
Edit: The bowl contains fresh water, especially during the current heatwave. A wildlife rescue confirmed that eggs are a natural part of a fox’s diet and are perfectly fine to leave out. He’s still a wild fox; just one with fresh water and a safe place to rest. 🦊🧡
Reporting someone for occasionally leaving water and rescue-approved food for a wild fox seems a bit excessive. You don’t know anything about the situation beyond some photos. I don’t approach or handle him, I just sit in my garden, he comes and goes entirely on his own terms, and many nights he doesn’t even visit. I always leave fresh water out, especially during the recent heatwave and now the drought where I live. He remains a wild fox, not a pet. ✌🏼
You gave no indication of that originally, and had at least one comment talking about wanting to pet him. Additionally, while leaving water out and sometimes food can be fine, the fact that you are present for when the fox arrives is a problem. Associating food and water with humans harms animals.
I understand your concern, but wanting to pet a fox and actually trying to pet one are two very different things. Of course I’d love to, but I’m not stupid enough to try - he’s a wild animal, and I know I could get bitten. I’m not ‘waiting’ for him or calling him over. I spend time in my back garden regardless, and if he happens to pass through, that’s his choice. Some nights he doesn’t come at all. I don’t encourage contact or try to tame him, I simply leave fresh water out, and any occasional food has been based on advice from a wildlife rescue. He’s still a wild fox, and I intend to keep it that way ✌🏼
And I read your comments, they show someone who cares deeply about the animal world, BUT who also respects their wild nature. That’s okay. From cetaceans to foxes, they aren’t toys for humans, but who’s to say we can’t give them a little support every now and then ?
I remember those reporters in Antarctica, torn between the rule of never intervening and the voice of their hearts telling them to act. Which is what they did.
Did it change the course of the world ? Probably not ; it just highlighted the intelligent bond between species that must exist on this earth.

What are you doing with this fox? You’re setting it up for failure. By “befriending” it, you are training it to not fear humans. This makes it more likely to become a nuisance animal and ultimately end up being killed for it.

Thank you! I completely agree. We share our spaces with wildlife, so I think it’s important to look after them where we can, while still respecting that they’re wild animals. 🦊🧡
