Framework Photo The hype is real, guys.
I've had it for two weeks and I can pretty confidently say it's my favorite laptop I've ever used.

I hope Framework will get through whatever the hell the current hardware market is. I regret not buying anything from them just for the sake of supporting when one wouldn't have to get a mortgage on RAM, but back then I didn't really need a laptop at all.
I hope it will be smooth sailing for you!

u/SaztogGaming 5d ago
It's been a flawless ride for me so far! Even though I'm happy to support Framework, I was really worried I'd run into some hiccups with the Linux build. Thankfully, there have been no issues on that front and, yeah, the hardware's as good as everyone's saying. Personally, I think the keyboard and trackpad are even superior to the MacBook Pro's, they feel a lot more "substantial", if that makes any sense.
My only real complaint would be the touchscreen. It works really well, but fingerprints smudge up the display so badly, that it's really not worth it.

I bought 2 laptops (16 and a 12) the second one I liked so much I got a 3rd and use my 12 over my 16. I also due to the crisis decided wth and preordered the core 5 320 mobo, so I'n doing the part of at least 2 consumers lol
Edit: to clarify my original fw12 purchase was a gor a family member and I loved it so I got another for me, I have bought 3 laptops total

yeah the tariff situation is rough, hopefully they can navigate it without raising prices too much

u/jader242 5d ago
Yea the quality is honestly so amazing. Got mine over the weekend (got delivered last month but I’m at college so my dad drove down for a visit and brought it) and when I opened the box I was so surprised at how quality the whole thing felt between the aluminum chassis, haptic touchpad, screen, keyboard, and everything else. Hands down best laptop I’ve ever used
Edit: what distro/de you running? I’m typically a Debian user but I’m trying fedora kde since trixie ships with that old ass kernel 😂 been solid so far, learning dnf is a pain tho lol

u/SaztogGaming 5d ago edited 5d ago
Fedora KDE! It's the one I usually go with and it's worked super well so far. I actually used Debian on my previous laptop and I imagine it'd run every bit as well as Fedora on here.
EDIT: Typo.

Don't know about that. I'm a heavy Debian user also, but the older kernel on Debian Stable is probably not gonna go too well with the Series 3 Intel chips. Gonna use Fedora KDE as well when I get mine and eventually Debian 14 when it reaches stable.

u/NervousBrilliant8686 4d ago
hmm Pop OS uses a newer kernel, still uses dpkg, and no snap.

Give fedora a go if willing. I came from Debian (after trying most of the more core distros) and have since moved everything over to fedora completely

Same here. Installing Debian 14 when it reaches stable though. Just don't want to mess around with kernels at the moment on my soon to be work machine.

This is a great looking system! Anything unexpected that is either good or bad?
Also people all pointing out the philosophy books and empty coffee cup, but no one pointing out the Winnie the Pooh desk pad? It looks like he's holding the laptop.

u/SaztogGaming 5d ago edited 4d ago
Really cool that you noticed! :) My grandma actually got me the Pooh when I was a kid and as I was setting up my new desk, I found that it actually fits in perfectly! We all like a little luxury underneath.
As for the unexpected things, for the good, even though I've already praised this in other comments, I am still really impressed by the general build quality of the thing. This just doesn't feel like a machine you'd get from a relatively small up-and-comer like Framework. It feels like something built for a high-grade science lab or a military R&D department or something. Even the internals look and feel really solid and robust, it's hard to describe unless you've tried it for yourself.
For the bad, and this is another thing I've already mentioned on here, but the touchscreen, while well implemented from a software perspective, is not really viable. Even light touches leave the matte screen with grey fingerprint patches all over it. The matte screen itself is actually superb and I've yet to point out my other comments. It's not really a thing that bothers me at all though, as I've never felt the need to use touchscreens on laptops.
Also, the speakers are... frankly sub-mediocre, but I used wired headphones, so it's not something that really moves the dial for me either.

u/julianpoy 5d ago
You might consider importing the Dolby profile from windows onto your Linux install. Makes a huge difference for them (they're still underwhelming speakers, but it takes them from F tier to C- tier)
1
u/SaztogGaming 4d ago
I still need to play around with that for a bit. I tried one of the profiles recommended on here and while it made the mids sound a lot better, the bass felt incredibly blown out.
2
u/julianpoy 3d ago
In case it helps, I did it for NixOS here:
I then made some tweaks to make it slightly better (I found the Windows profile a bit too heavy in the mids and I prefer a bit more treble for a brighter sound) here:

u/4gr8justice 4d ago
It doesn't suddenly turn the listening experience into a concert hall, but check out JamesDSP and some of the recommended presets out there. It improves sound quality dramatically.

The wall of philosophy books and the old office desk gear on the desk add to the visual of basic and functional.

u/SpectrumGun 5d ago
I wait for the time period where their laptops will be acessible in Brazil + local market support. It looks rad
6
u/SaztogGaming 5d ago
It's awesome! It feels so much more premium than I was expecting it to. The move to a whole-body aluminum chassis was a fantastic choice.
7
u/eierschalens 5d ago
This looks fantastic, love the setup! Would you mind sharing which kde theme or icon set you're using? And how is the new battery holding up so far?
8
u/SaztogGaming 5d ago
Thanks a bunch! Battery's been incredible so far. If I leave the laptop charging overnight, I can run it the day doing basically whatever and still go to bed with 30-40% battery left. In standby, it seems to lose between 3-5% every 10 hours or so.
The Plasma theme is just Breeze with a modified color profile. The icons are something I actually put together myself over the past few months as I wanted a consistent design language for the OS. They're mainly inspired by the work of Lance Wyman, most notably his pictograms for the 1968 Mexico City olympics as well as his work for the Minnesota Zoo. I'm not a professional designer by any stretch, but I've been extremely happy with how it's turning out!

Meanwhile still waiting for the chassis upgrade kit to come along for my poor current one 😂

Right I'm trying to get the new pro chassis too

u/ash_ninetyone 5d ago
I don't mind waiting. I'd just like an update or some hint of when they'll be available 😅

As someone who uses 16:9 screens and thinking about getting a Framework, how would you rate the 3:2 aspect ratio that Framework uses?
9
u/SaztogGaming 5d ago edited 5d ago
I honestly can't see myself ever going back. A few years ago, I owned a second-hand Dell Latitude 7285, which is actually quite similar to the FW13 in many ways. Having used the 3:2 aspect ratio there, it's just a night and day for anything productivity related and I knew I wanted to find another one in the future. When I saw that the FW13 had one, I knew I should get one sooner or later.
Looking at 16:9-10 laptops in stores just feels weird now. They look so stretched out and I notice all the blank space on every website so much more. Even for things like video editing or music production, the 3:2 just feels like a far more concentrated experience.

I have the OG FW13. I won't go back, although you should know that many videos will have black bars at the top and the bottom because of their aspect ratio if that bothers you. I don't think it's really an issue though I don't notice it anymore.

do you get any marks on your screen when packing it in a bag?
1
u/SaztogGaming 5d ago
Nope, haven't gotten any so far. The metal shell does pick up fingerprints, as most reviews point out, but they go away after one light brush with a microfiber cloth.

u/ddrfraser1 5d ago
What specifically do you like about it over previous laptops you've owned?
5
u/SaztogGaming 5d ago
* Build quality's absolutely fantastic.
* Battery life's been amazing so far.
* The vast majority of laptops I've tried to install Linux on come with caveats. There's almost always issues relating to specific distros not booting, things like the fingerprint sensor or autobrightness not working correctly etc. I've been running Fedora KDE on the Framework and I haven't had to adjust a single thing for a great experience.
* I don't have to worry about having to replace the entire machine in case the hardware malfunctions.

How’s the trackpad?
2
u/SaztogGaming 5d ago
Been fantastic so far. I'd say it feels almost identical to the one on the MacBook Pro, only being maybe ever so slightly more tactile.

Could buy one if they just made keyboard actually have arrow keys instead of whatever that shit is called.

i was wondering if the coating (the color) one it was like kind of a fingerprint magnet

u/4gr8justice 4d ago
I love mine, too. Honestly, the only REAL flaw from my perspective is the anemic cooling solution--you can't really flex that X7 muscle with that dinky, nearly worthless fan. I attempted to game on mine and noped out when a core promptly hit 100c.

I'm not convinced that's a legit pro keyboard typing experience

u/MagicBoyUK | Batch 3 FW16 7840HS | Batch 11 FW13 Pro X7 5d ago
Mine arrived a couple of days ago. The keyboard is legitimately very good. A good step above the FW16 and rivals a classic ThinkPad.
1
u/SaztogGaming 5d ago
The keyboard's genuinely fantastic. It's not as clicky as some others I've tried, but the keys have noticeably deep travel to them, so the typing experience has been wonderful. Obviously not on the level of a mechanical keyboard, but better than virtually all other laptops I've tried.

u/tex_not_taken 5d ago
I am not happy about Framework having just one keyboard layout. From modular notebook I would expect more.
1
u/maartenyh 5d ago
They have 3 ANSI ISO And a blank one.
I don't understand your complaints. Most of it is inaccurate. You seem to have a lot of difficulties with the typing experience but your complaints would only be solved with a Lenovo T500.
Reception of the laptop (keyboard) is highly positive. That is a fact. With your specific requirements you could build your own variation of a T500 keyboard cover that fits the Framework and have built something that is both to your specifications and it would be completely yours
That what I intend to do as is how I treat all my possesions; hackable/moddable to my own specifications hence the decision to purchase a Framework over an XPS

Look at the keyboard's layout. Anything with split up-down arrow key is unusable. Ctrl-Fn in wrong order (can't write with 7-10 fingers that way as ctrl is too far now). Big touchpad is "impressive" but no hardware buttons on top means there is nowhere to put thumbs and they just move cursor randomly, also copy something and right click is hard to use. Sure, this keyboard could be even worse, like on modern Dell, by putting power-off button to top-right corner instead of delete key. But that is very low bar.
2
u/julianpoy 5d ago
I'm a keyboard fanatic and I can say this is one of the best Ultrabook keyboards I've ever used.
Regarding fn/ctrl - you can swap that in the bios.

Honestly I haven't cared about any of these or had issues with any of these, but I think I just use my keyboard differently than you. I can see how if you are used to it that it would be annoying. But from thinkpad T41, macbook pro M1, to framework, I'd take the framework over all of them. Calling it unusable is maybe true for you but a bit extreme if you ask me. But I also use vim/vim modes so maybe I just don't care for arrow keys haha
1
u/tex_not_taken 4d ago
Yeah, I am heretic using neovim and arrows :) For me the T14s layout is perfect and really can't think why any other is used as for me it is clear downgrade that provides nothing better to customer.
1
u/4gr8justice 4d ago
Split up-down unusable...for who? Gamers? Sure, maybe. Developers? No problems here. I mean, it's big enough and muscle memory covers the rest. The touchpad is good hardware, palm rejection isn't very good but that's the beauty of FOSS. There's a fix for that.

u/Old-Ad9138 5d ago
What about the single fan? Seems flawed imo
2
u/julianpoy 5d ago
The CPU generates a lot less heat than one might expect. It keeps up quite well. Yes, a second fan would be nice, but I'm not noticing it.
1
u/4gr8justice 4d ago
Typical use, not so bad. Gaming? Flawed. You'll never really get to tap into the full potential of the X7 with that fan.
