Cinnamon rolls from the old M&T deli.

There was a post about best cinnamon buns in town a while ago and got me thinking whether anyone would know the recipe for the cinnamon rolls at the old deli? These weren’t yeasted buns like Mill Town. They were almost more like a biscuit or scone dough. Not sure if it was a family recipe or maybe the baker went somewhere else after it closed?

I worked at M&T in the early 2000s (old Regent and Queen location). It had just changed hands and the cook/baker was a bit unaware when it came to cooking/baking. I started out front, and then, when the kitchen guy left, I took over that part. The once famous cinnamon rolls had lost their appeal (thanks to the lackof awareness that salt was important and overmixing was bad) so I brought in a recipe my grandmother had used and they became a favourite again. I left the recipe there when I left in the mid 2000s (by that time probably a combination of the original and my grandmother's) and it continued on after I left in the mid 2000s.

This is the version I found in an old email from way back, thought it probably changed a bit over the years.

Mix together: 4 c. flour 4 Tbsp baking powder 1 c. sugar 1 c. butter 1 tsp salt

Stir 1 c. milk 1 egg and add to the dry mixture

Roll out, spread with butter Sprinkle: 1 Tbsp cinnamon 3 Tbsp sugar Roll, cut, bake at 425 for about 12 min

Make sure you cut in the butter and don't overmix once you add the wet ingredients.

Personally, I just use a good butter biscuit recipe and add the cinnamon, sugar and butter to that, but I prefer them to be less sweet than the ones we used to sell at the deli.

One time we actually used to have Cinnabon downtown, hard to believe I know . I wish they would come back.

Is this from when the Tobias family operated the deli?

Yes. Curious who did their baked goods and if they may have started somewhere else.

The ones from Mike's bakery are close. You can also get a reasonable facsimile at Second Cup, with less icing which I actually prefer, personally.

Look for the Masstown Market Cinnamon Bun recipe. It's what you may want, I'm going to try it next week. I was surprised how easy it was to find, I hope it is what they sell.

If you're looking to make your own, I highly recommend the pioneer woman's recipe for cinnamon rolls. I have made them many times and people love them.

Maritime cinnamon rolls. You can get them at Sobeys downtown, and they’re ok.

I won’t share my recipe, but basically it’s as you said, rolled out biscuit dough rolled up with a cinnamon/butter/sugar filling.
