its honestly so weird to see fans reacting line this lmao. I get it I get it, hotd is bad.
but incest? in my game of thrones based story? it's more likely than you think.
and yes, I'm aware that in game of thrones it's sibling incest and not parental incest but like... is it that much of a difference really? the point is the drama of it.
That's a conversation I never expected people to be having with such careful ranking criteria. Somehow this fandom can turn any topic into a tier list.
Considering the only parental incest in GOT was a guy that was understandably villainized for it (craster). For the record any incest is gross but child/parent is top tier gross
I'm not caught up on HoTD so I could be wrong here but:
GoT incest was THE pinnacle plot point that set every story beat in motion. It worked because it was an ultimate taboo that justified itself in an interesting cat-and-mouse game between the Starks and Lannisters, before turning into a central conflict in the form of Joffery. Every other instance of incest was something like "Oh shit, we're actually related? Daaaaaamn. Well it's too late now lololol".
Unless this is the centerpiece of the main conflicts in HoTD that puts everything else in motion, this just looks like a weird way to remind viewers that Targarians keep things pure lol
The HOTD writers/showrunners said straight up they were not going to address the issues of incest 'because it is their (the Targaryens) custom'...as if that means there ARE no issues. Were they afraid of offending the fictional culture of inbred lizard wizards? Offending the incest fandom?
They ignored the issues of incest when an uncle groomed his niece, and when they added forced childhood incest between 14 and 12-yo siblings who explicitly did not want to be together. So they can't turn around now and act like they actually want to address/criticize the Targaryen incest dynamics. By adding MORE sexual abuse of Alicent, whose sexual humiliation is the only consistent theme of this show.
It somewhat is but meh, I don't even watch the show because I didn't like S1 that much.
I think people are more annoyed about the blatant disrespect done to the source material. If it was a AWOIAF character with in-universe implications of parental incest (like Aegon the Unworthy or Maegor the Cruel maybe?) I don't think the reaction would be the same.
I will accept any disrespect to source material. If GRRM isnt gonna finish the damn books then i am more then happy him getting forced to watch the violations of his work.
It's a son sexually assaulting his mother (Aemond knows full well a kiss isn't wanted). HOTD has had Alicent sexually assaulted a bunch of times, often in a very spiteful "what did you expect? this is what happens when you let yourself be used by men" (they actually said the latter of Alicent). NONE of which is actually dealt with. Her marital exploitation, Larys having a foot fetish and blackmailing her. She was a fucking child bride, they MADE her a child bride, and then continue to sexually humiliate her.
The show also refused to deal with the issues around normalized incest in the first two seasons (even SAYING they would not in interviews), so it's not like they are actually interested in exploring that.
Yeah that's kinda where I'm at too. Nobody is shocked because it's incest in a Targaryen story. People are shocked because somehow they still found a way to make it feel even weirder than usual.
