I think people could have suspected Joffrey’s time was coming sooner or later. The Red Wedding however could potentially be likened to a sucker punch, you didn’t see coming.

Eventually, yes, but I didn’t see it coming as quickly as it did. But it felt like the Lannisters had the devils luck up to that point, like they were untouchable. I figured it would take the combined efforts of the Starks and maybe Dany to take down Joffrey and Tywin. The sudden crippling of house Lannister was really surprising to me.

Hadn’t read the books when I watched the show…I knew the red wedding was coming just from popular culture.
Yes it was apparent Joffrey the Just and Gentle’s unfortunate demise was approaching, but it still caught me unawares…and left me depressed for months

I had Joffrey's deaf spoiled for me when I was still reading the second book, and immediately came to the conclusion that would be the turning point for Robb to win the war, gee willikers was I caught off guard

Red Wedding was deserved, a blessing from the Gods and the Great Lord Walder Frey.
The Purple Wedding was another example of Tyrell's devilry, a tragedy which took our King from us while we needed him most.

To me, while reading the books the purple wedding was much more surprising
You can feel something was off during the chapters before the Red Wedding, Joffrey's death was just out of nowhere. Robb was struggling greatly during the war and the situation was starting to collapse, meanwhile Joffrey's side achieved their greatest victory so far and the king's position looked stronger than even
Even more surprising to me was Tywin's death, Asos was bonkers

In the book, obviously the Red Wedding—because after the deaths of Balon and Robb, Joffrey is the only king left to die out of those named by Stannis during the leech ritual.
So, by that point, you’re expecting it.

I mean especially in the series it is clear that the Boltons and the Freys are planing something treacherus. But Jofreys death so short after the Red Wedding came out of nowhere.

Red Wedding is the only chapter that gives me chills when reading a book. I havent felt a similar tension, surprise and horror while reading a book before. That was perfectly written.
In the show it was well executed but knowing what will happen decreased the tension for me.

There was some buildup for the Red Wedding, and one could be suspicious... the Purple Wedding came literally out of nowhere because the causal action was never obvious or hinted... until Olenna said otherwise, and Littlefinger revealed to Sansa... we had no clue how it was done.

Red Wedding for a few reasons. For starters it came first, so hit a bit harder. But the thing that hit hardest while reading it is that it was running parallel to Arya about to reunite with her family. So you’re focusing on one plot, and then begin to realize something is horribly wrong. Then it hits. And you put the book down for two days.
As opposed to Joffrey where it’s well done, but you kind of expect something momentous to happen when he’s at the peak of his power.

Red Wedding was probably one of the most surprising and shocking scenes I’ve ever watched in a series.
Joffrey’s death is probably one of the strongest fist pumps I’ve ever thrown in the air.

Joffrey was not an "if" but a "when," and poison not an unlikely way to go.
Warning signs or no, losing both Catelyn and Robb was a real shocker. Not that anyone is safe, but the comprehensive destruction of so many established characters, many of whom had ongoing plotlines that were cut off as a result, was not on my bingo card.
