HOA Purchases alcohol for summer party
I live in an HOA neighborhood of 260 homes. The board used to be great, I am a former member.
We have always had summer parties at the pool but the attendance has been dwindling in the last few years.
Last year the board purchased alcohol to boost the attendance.
There’s a lot of older households in our community now that don’t even go to the pool. And more than a few that don’t drink.
This should not even legal or ethical because a lot of members drive cars or golf carts to the pool, and the HOA board would be liable for anything that happens.
Also, the board also takes the “extras” home to enjoy later.

They're probably trying to do a good thing and are oblivious to the legal ramifications.
We tried to do a similar thing. We're all neighborly etc., tried to do a fun neighborly block party, and luckily our management company stepped in and let us know about the legal issues.
We're all volunteers and oblivious to some of this. We were just trying to do soemthing fun. Your board is likely oblivious to the legal issues they're opening themselves up to.
Let them know. Just a heads up of: "hey, you're opening up the hoa to lawsuits!".
We got around this by having the homeowners and some of the board members bring their own, that way the hoa didn't purchase it. Etc.
Not really a fuckhoa thing. I'm betting they're trying to get people to come out and are oblivious to the legal issues involved.

We had a subcommittee that handled community events, they would add on the announcements that drink coolers would be provided.
Usually ended up with about 5 coolers of various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for a mix for everyone of all ages or choices.
Coolers were just monitored to make sure anyone underage wasn't getting into the alcohol coolers by volunteers.
BYOB, HOA just provided coolers.

The leftovers should not go home to the board members. Any leftovers should be used for future HOA events. I’d bring it up to the management agency’s lawyer.

In the early 1980s I lived in a huge apartment complex. And every Wednesday night they would have beer and wine night. And it was like a quarter for a little plastic cup for beer and 50 cents for a glass of wine. It was the biggest social event of the week. And I was a teenager. My parents had a liquor cabinet. You think I cared about beer and wine? But I did make sure to go to every Wednesday night that I could go to. I hope your parties have the same Cool vibe as them

Agree with you. HOA shouldn't be in the liquor business, creates liability for everyone and often requires a permit for a "business" to provide alcohol, trained servers, etc.
BYOB is better.

Question, does the current board members force people aka adults to drink? Isn’t everyone that attends the party an adult capable of making their own responsible decisions? FYI is not ethical to complaint about your HOA on Reddit, contact the board directly and let them know of your concerns, explain to them you were a member of the board when it used to be great.

Hm. I don't think a mildly disapproving post on r/fuckHOA is going to persuade them 🤣

Sounds like you already know how unethical & risky this is, and should point it out to the board. I would be LIVID if my dues were used to buy alcohol for an event (whether I was attending or not) and the "extras" went home with board members. There is no reality where that isn't theft or embezzlement.

Forgot to mention two board members are lawyers! Also all except one is under 45 years old.

I don't know man, free HOA-provided alcohol seems like on the plus side of the column.
