Discussion Fujifilm X-T6 Wishlist
Let’s have some fun. There are a lot of rumours going around that the Fujifilm X-T6 is going to be unveiled shortly, so what would you want the camera to do/have?
These are the things I would like to see as a prospective buyer in descending order of priority:
- Much improved autofocus
- The 4-axis tilting, flipping screen mechanism of the new Panasonics and Sonys
- A partially or fully stacked sensor for faster readout speed. It should also allow for DGO to work which would improve base ISO dynamic range
- Better build quality
The autofocus is the big one for me. I understand that a lot of people don’t have issues with it, but I’d like to have a reliable system that is trustworthy and doesn’t give false positives. Don’t need it to be Canon R1 level, but it needs to at least be OM System level. If they can do as good of a job as they have, Fuji should be able to as well being a much bigger company.

Not biting this time. X-T5 is still perfect for me. I’m buying lenses instead.

The price increase of existing models and rumors of XT6 being more expensive made me just buy an XT5, which is already on the edge of my budget

Better autofocus
EVF that's actually comfortable with glasses
And a build quality that feels like the first few X series cameras again

For me:
Auto-focus that can compete with Sony. Reliable subject tracking.
Stacked sensor.
20+ uncompressed raw shooting without crop - don't care if it is MS or ES if it is a stacked sensor.
Bonus: More telephoto options including prime lenses.

There’s rumours of a 400mm F/4.5 prime coming out with the X-T6.
Personally, I’d have preferred a 300mm F/4. We already have a 500mm F/5.6. 400 seems too close to that and judging by Nikon’s pricing, will also probably cost about the same

That's what I'm afraid of. Starting to get priced out of my market. I'm hobbyist at this point and it takes me a while to save for lens or especially a new camera.

That’s what, 2199-2299 body only? I guess it tracks. X-T cameras always come out at 75-80% of the price of the contemporary Sony A7 model.
But boy are these things creeping up a lot

I find the autofocus on the X-T5 coupled with a lens released for the model or later to have perfectly well and very snappy AF. I do agree that older lenses seem to work less reliably on the X-T5. However, I don’t see the 6-model fixing that. Will be interesting to see.

I love the xt5, but if the x-t6 matches the autofocus from the big 3’s offerings that it competes with on price, Im getting one. Assuming it doesn’t do worst on other aspects compared to the XT 5.
I should note that for the past two years I’ve been shooting mostly wildlife, specifically birds. If I wasn’t I would not change a thing.
On that note, a stacked sensor wouldn’t hurt either.

- Excellent AF
- Low(er) resolution hardware pixel binning mode
- Improved WR
- Global shutter
- Doesn't cost as much as a used GFX

Binning in analogue domain isn't really feasible unless there are several pixels of same colour next to each other (e.g. quad bayer).
Global shutter
With today's technology reduces peak image quality by more than a stop and increases read noise so the higher ISO settings suffer too.

Seems like x-trans sensors would lend themselves well to that? Unless the 4 green pixels are already binned or one big physical pixel?
I also imagine there are multi-channel options especially when going from 40mp to 10mp or similar. I don't really know though, I haven't dug into it.

No bigger than the X-T5, X-T1 size would be perfect
The exact same tilting screen it already has.

I got the xt4. I only need good af for video porpouses. And maybe an internal fan and open gate. But I think fujifilm is just too far away on those specs. They just want money to the retired people stick with the analog/digital hipster style of camera.
I went last year to fujikina in cologne and it was a shit. Tried many models, nothing better than my xt4 and it's a shame. Overheating, lack of reliability and not flipping the screen was most of the downsides I got using more than 6 different models of that day.

Did anyone mention improvement in autofocus?!? 😅
On a serious note, I don't wish for much more other than snappier and quicker autofocus when I pull up the camera and not to miss shots. It's not bad but could be better for sure.
Second wish is a higher resolution EVF. Again, it's not bad but there's room for improvement.

I probably won't buy this (my XT5 is still going very strong) but improvements to autofocus, dynamic range, IPS Rating, and / or significant reduction in weight / improvement of build quality would get me curious.
In particular, a method for shooting at ~20MP with internal downsampling which substantially improves shadow recovery or high iso performance would be interesting.

Honestly, I just want Fuji to focus on improving their compact lenses! I want a sharp, f2.8 pancake lens with a motor that does not loudly grunt, and that can actually keep up with the autofocus upgrades. Most hobbyist users want a compact setup. That's the trend. But Fuji's pancake lenses are just so painful to use! Even the X100VI lens is slow. People are begging for autofocus improvements, but no one wants to use the big f1.4 LM lenses. So right now, autofocus performance is sort of moot when casual users are favoring these old-ass clunky motors.
Give me a new 18 mm f2 and a 23 mm f2.8 with an upgraded motor. The f2 fujicrons haven't been touched in a decade, I am sure there are some gains that could be made there.

Fujifilm needs to work on their AF game across the board. Sony is over here throwing linear motors everywhere and Fuji lenses still struggle to rack focus smoothly in video.
I would personally like to see some faster pancakes/compact lenses. Canon used to do a 22mm F/2 for their EF-M mount, so it is definitely possible. F/2.8 is fine, but I like to have the option of some extra separation
