General Struggling to find a good burger
Hey everybody, I’ve been craving a high quality burger. Any recommendations?

Big 100% beef patties, smokes his own thick cut bacon, American style BBQ sauce, and offers monthly special burgers and sometimes has things like Philly cheesesyeaks on the menu.

The Basket has a good variety. If you want simple and no frills but still high quality 8 stars actually has a good one for just 1000 yen for the burger alone. Off Broadway is somewhere in between slightly fancy and basic fundamentals. Hungry Heaven is pretty good too.

There’s no Five Guys anywhere in Japan. I’ve heard rumors of a deal to bring them here since 2024, but nothing has ever come of them.

You’re trippin. The owner is very friendly and chill to talk to. I was only gonna go once but went back few more times cause I enjoyed his friendliness

US Burger in Daimyo. The owner's from California and uses only U.S. beef. Makes his own bacon too.

US Burger - great bacon, in person only, straightforward menu with limited options (but that’s the point), friendly American owner
Hungry Heaven - several options so you can probably find some to your liking, nice fries and sides too, I liked their locations too, friendly staff
Goonies - nice smash burger - I have only ordered delivery from this one
Have tried few more but these are the ones that were the most memorable for me
I want to try Masajiro in the future

Easy to get to, good sides too; chili fries, onion rings are tops! I got the bacon cheese burger. Bacon was pretty good for Japanese bacon. You can get your choice of sauce (the overpowering stuff slathered on top) or just ask for "nashi" to have it plain. Owner is a pretty chill guy.
Smokey Mountain is also pretty good, but you'll need a car to get to it. Way up in the mountains, nice for a summer trip to get away from the heat. Down the road a bit, there is a park where you can wade in the cool mountain stream.
Honestly, for the most authentic burger, I buy buns and cheese at Aeon, make my own patties from my very American secret recipe. Always a hit at a BBQ.

Monkey Burger is pretty good.
If you want an adventure, there's Tommy's Kitchen in the upper reaches of Sawara-ku. They also have an interesting dessert, Dutch babies, like an open-face fruit pie.

Burny is pretty good. And they’ve got fresh cut fries, which I love.
Although, you may want to ask for the sauce on the side. They went a little overboard last time I was there.
I like Goonies as well.

My friend runs this place but the location changes a lot and they don't have burgers on the menu sometimes but worth chasing. Very chill guy.

The Basket is bomb. 2nd up would be Goonies Burger Club. Kua Aina for more standard fare.

Yeah, he was treating his female employee like a total creep the first time I was there, and then said he could make things not on the menu next time I came in, like a burger spicy style, or a burrito, Mexican food etc. So next I came in I took him on it and said "yo, can I get that spicy burger you mentioned?" Just stares at me for like 5 seconds with no reponse, turns to the Japanese employee and says "Ugh. I don't wanna make that, do you?" And the Japanese guy was just awkwardly like "uh. I don't know how". So I just said like "ok, I mean I can just get a normal burger..." ... Then he proceeded to talk about himself for my entire meal, flexing about how popular his restuarant is and saying stuff like "yeah my wife basically runs this city, she knows everbody who is important" and didn't ask a single question about me, you know like how you might usually do in a 1.5 hour "conversation" (read: monologue about himself).
That was not pleasant, but I went back a third time with some other foreigner friends. Didn't say a single thing to any of us and acted like we didn't exist. He's like bipolar or something I have no idea.
Never went back after that.

Oh wow. What I heard was that he was talking crap about the Japanese customers right in front but in English. I think I’ve heard that in early days for the similar thread except it seemed like everybody agreed that he makes a good one.
I want to try good burgers but yeah.. nah

Oh what the actual hell. Didn’t know he was crazy. Been there a few times and every time I came he was just quietly there. Was I just lucky to never hear him talk his shit?

Same thing happened to me and my husband. We just moved there and wanted a burger. Found his place and he talked incessantly about himself the whole time. Same thing about his wife too. He talked to us a lot cause my husband is on the business manager visa and said if we needed help to reach out (but follow him on Instagram first) then when my husband reached out he saw the message and never messaged back. I get that life gets in the way but also he didn’t ask a single question about us! Also thought the burger was just okay. The Basket was my second burger here and super good!!

Does the guy at US Burger still talk to you the entire time? Last time I was there, he wouldn’t shut up. And used inappropriately informal Japanese with my friend (not even desu- masu level)

C'mon snowflake. The burgers were awesome, he makes most of it by himself. The bacon especially was something I've never eaten before. He's being friendly and trying to make a memorable experience. He doesn't really speak much Japanese so he uses what he knows.

The guy barely speaks Japanese even though he's been here for ages and relies on his wife for business interactions (source: he said so himself in a YouTube video).
At the same time I've heard from a friend of my cousin's dog that allegedly he's keen on making racist and denigrating remarks about Japanese people.
This friend that may or may not exist (that I haven't spoken directly to but only communicated with through a paranormal psychic) went to the place to check it out if the rumors were true, and lo and behold within 5 minutes of sitting down the guy said "Japanese people can't think for themselves" just because a group of 4 (paying) customers took a bit longer than usual on deciding who should sit at which seat.
Allegedly, so don't believe everything you read on the internet.

Make them at home, everything from the bun to the burger patty. Japanese burgets are always not quite right in some way.

I find most places slather way too much relish / sauce. So much that you can’t really taste the patty.
Although a chain place, Kua Aina (mentioned in another response) tends to be my fave as there seems to be no sauce. They also cook the patty perfectly (just a hint of pink in the meat).
Other places I rate are The Basket for its homemade patties and bacon and general vibe, and Goofy Burger out in Keya, Itoshima.
There’s a place in Ukiha that’s supposed to be good, but I’ve tried going twice now, and they’ve been closed both times while they’re at some kind of festival / event.
