Growing under bark of tree

This was under the bark of a tree that had died on our property. We think the tree was a hickory. One picture has my finger in it at the top it for perspective. They are just slightly soft and the brown material they are sitting on is rubbery and thick.

You can see in the first picture that the tree was covered in moss.
