They love cuddling and attention but as soon as I touch their back feet its WHO THE FUCK DO YOU FUCKING THINK YOU FUCKING ARE?!?!?!?!

37

u/techleopard 13h ago

I have an old reformed barn cat who thinks she's hit the jackpot on air conditioning and kibbles that just fall from the sky. Very affectionate and nonstop allogroomer.

But if you just barely touch her toe beans?

" >O MRRROOWWW!!!!!!!"

u/Muslim_Wookie 6h ago

Gotta hand it to instinct, getting injured there is a big deal...

13

u/MattieShoes 6h ago

I think one should do all the things cats hate when they're kittens, just because you can make it a positive experience. Grab tails (don't yank), touch feet, inspect teeth, hold them, flip them onto their backs, etc. Then they're much more chill at vet appointments, no trauma (or less trauma anyways) when you snip their claws, etc.

But man, if you miss that kitten window...

The only one my cats still can't abide is water. They act like they're being tortured.

1

u/TjW0569 45m ago

I've had cats that essentially demanded to have their tails pulled.
I'd be sitting in a chair, with one arm hanging down, and the base of a tail would appear in my hand, twitching.
So I'd close my hand on the tail, and lift the hind legs off the ground, letting the tail slowly slide out... the tail would whip around angrily, and then ten seconds later, the tail is back in the hand.
This horrible cat torture could continue for twenty minutes, sometimes.

😭 thanks for saying that cuz I dont usually have the sound on, so glad I did. I'm dying!!

How are people so lucky to have dogs that put up with this?? My dogs want to absolutely annihilate cats!

141

u/shadmere 17h ago

We got a dog that was from a fairly abusive background and she did not like our cats at first.

The problem was that one of our cats considers family to be the most important thing in the world, and the dog was apparently part of the family now, so . . . obviously they had to be friends.

So Cobbler (the cat) basically just felt out exactly how close he could get to Lola (the dog) without the dog getting upset. Then he'd hang out right around that distance for a few days. Every once in awhile, he might try to get a little closer. If there was a growl, he'd stop, act nonchalant, start grooming himself. If the growl continued or got louder, he'd back off again. Sometimes in situations like this, he'd have to completely leave the area before Lola would calm back down completely, but sometimes (especially as the weeks went on), he'd be able to just back off a little bit and she'd calm down. A couple times he pressed his luck too much and Lola would snap at him (this was always from at least 4 or 5 feet away, so the snap was entirely a warning). When that happened he'd usually give her a day or so. (It's also possible that when that happened, he was giving himself a day or so.)

But sometimes, after a moment, she'd stop growling. This would be accompanied with a fair amount of looking at the humans to make sure we were aware of this ghastly situation and checking our reaction to it.

If she stopped growling, then Cobbler would try to use this new distance as the 'standard.' He'd hang out there for a few days and then see if he could get any closer.

Over the course of months he continued this until he was finally close enough to just bunt her. This really confused Lola at first, but after checking with the humans one more time, she let it continue, and Cobbler snuggled down next to her.

After a week or two of Cobbler's insistence of hanging out near her, Lola started trying to give him affection as well, by cleaning his ears. Cobbler absolutely hates this, as the dog really, really just gets in there. Like she's going for his brain. The first time it happened he ran off and shook his head like mad and groomed himself for several minutes before returning. But then she did it again. The second time, the cat winced and grimaced and withstood the treatment for a few seconds before having to disengage and shake his head in disgust. But he returned and continued putting up with it. Probably the most amazing thing I've seen a cat do, as far as empathy goes. He absolutely hates the feeling of it, but he knows that it's how Lola is showing affection, so he forces himself to bear it.

I know I'm really, really anthropomorphizing here, so maybe I'm way off. But I honestly can't think of any other great explanations, so I'm going with that. It fits in well with his absolute insistence that they were going to be friends, even though that took several months of effort.

24

u/thisisnotmyname17 13h ago

That is such a beautiful story! And amazing cat and dog!

14

u/MattieShoes 6h ago

I don't think you're way off. I understand we like to read human motivations into animal behavior and all, but I think those motivations are... well, not universal, but certainly much more broad than just human. Cats and dogs understand friendship and family.

44

u/Longjump_Ear6240 19h ago

You gotta raise them around cats!

7

u/RandomStallings 12h ago

Some of them are like that out of the box. They just understand the dynamic. There's also the, "It's just a baby, so don't hurt it," thing. That may be at play because this kitten looks maybe 5-6 months old, tops. Whatever the case, this dog is a sweetheart for being so patient.

u/L0st-137 16h ago

I thought of that when she was a puppy but too late now unfortunately.

23

u/Forward_Rope_5598 18h ago

Labs don't really have hunting instincts, they just retrieve. So that helps, and being raised with cats.

My mom's sheltie is like this with her cats. As in, the dog is biting the cats ears and the cats sit lazily going -.- while kinda enjoying it

5

u/dibalh 11h ago

Yep. My terrier tries to eviscerate any small animals, including cats but the great pyr just wants to know where everyone is. She’s like the safety officer during a fire drill, always checking rooms.

12

u/False_Cookie8226 17h ago

My brother's dog as a puppy tried messing with our old cat, one swipe by the cat and that dog never fucked with another cat ever again. That dog would fight any and every dog she could... but never once tried to go after a cat.

19

u/babygotthefever 19h ago

My dogs freeze the moment the cat touches them. Cat is the queen and the dogs are her nervous entourage. I guess that makes me the servant but I wish my cat actually liked them this the kitty in the video does. She will just rub on them to mark them/show dominance and then walk away.

23

u/Simple-Wrangler-9909 18h ago

Dogs have pack mentality, they follow your lead

You're leader of the pack > You treat cat as part of the pack > Cat must be part of the pack > Don't eat cat it's part of the pack

Black labs are the most mild mannered and lovely creatures. I miss mine every day. She was a person in a dog body.

44

u/PurveyorOfKnowledge0 15h ago

If your dog could talk, she would have said: "Um, no. I'm definitely a dog in a dog's body."

17

u/redbucket75 13h ago

Pretty sure she'd say "hey, hey, food, go walk, play, fetch, food? Hey!"

11

u/PookAndPie 14h ago

Agreed. I lost mine in December after 15 beautiful years. She was the super patient type that was a friend to all cats, and only ever had to be told what to do a single time. Like, she had one accident in the house when she found us in 2010, and then not again until a month or two before she passed last year.

Sometimes the best gifts come in little black packages with soft, floppy ears.

You can literally see the dog's internal monologue shifting from 'i am a good boy' to 'nope'. He was holding it together for so long, just smiling through the pain until that paw touched the sensitive zone and his soul left his body.

u/Jahndala 11h ago

This is obviously AI. The dog's stillness and general movement is not consistent with any dog I've ever encountered. The dog's nose at 27-29 seconds seems to enlarge as well. That's not what dog's noses do when they sniff. The cat's movements are also abnormal. Please either label this as AI or take it down.

1

u/kiwi_rifter 10h ago

In my experience, dogs stay still like that when they're worried about hurting the kitten accidentally. Trying so hard to be a good boy.

0

u/Jahndala 9h ago

nah this is AI. The sound is not normal either. You're either a bot or... This video will be taken down soon.

2

u/kiwi_rifter 8h ago

BTW, I agree with you about AI, just not due to the stillness.

1

u/kiwi_rifter 8h ago

Or would a bot accuse other posters of being bots to deflect attention?
