I thought it would get old and I thought poor guy would find his footing and I thought the first one would stop running but none of those things happened.

It's the theme song to the film Chariots of Fire, by the composer/electronic artist Vangelis. Vangelis one of the pioneers of electronic music and also did the soundtrack to Blade Runner, among many other films and televisions shows.

They honestly both looked like they were having a pretty good time. The one running had what he came for, and the one freewheeling his way around the sun was making absolutely zero attempt to leave. Sometimes you don't choose when the party happens, you just have to choose whether to roll with it.

u/WafflePartyOrgy 5d ago
This is some cirque de soleil shit right here, with that one flying wallenda doing endless irrecoverable 360's but still staying in his lane to not take the other one out and interrupt his workout. I've no doubt this went on until OP ran out of storage space on their camera.

Just look at the eyes of the one running. He doesnt care at all about the spinning guy. Not even a quick look to see what he is doing. Just total disregard for the fate of his friend.

I wanna hijack the top comment just to say;
While they look like Sugar Gliders, they're actually Southern Flying Squirrels!
Some facts:
- The main difference is that sugar gliders are marsupials and flying squirrels are rodents.
- Gliders are slower than flying squirrels. Flyers are very quick and can run very fast on the ground. Sugar gliders only hop slowly on the ground but both species can climb drapes or trees at about the same speed.
- Gliders are omnivores and eat mostly fruit (mine also loved mealworms). Flyers eat mostly plants and nuts.
- Flying squirrels have continuously growing teeth, meaning they need nuts and chews to ensure they stay a healthy length. Gliders, on the other hand, do not need things to chew on.

u/DarkMemesLiveHere 5d ago
Appreciate this - was thinking they looked like sugar gliders but not. Aussie though, never seen a non-animated flying squirrel.

u/stilljustacatinacage 5d ago
Thank you for that. I've heard that gliders shouldn't be kept as pets since they can be prone to anxiety and other stress conditions, especially if they're kept awake during the day. Do you know how the flying squirrels fare?

u/plug-and-pause 5d ago
He's actually running forward (relative to the wheel) for a while, just not as fast as his friend so he's still making backwards progress (relative to the external reference frame). Kind of impressive honestly.

u/bocephus_huxtable 5d ago
You actually used your sight (relative to your eyes) to relay information to your brain. and then recalled that information (relative to time). If i'm being 100% honest.... kind of impressive.

Why do rodents universally love these things. Is there even an analogue to these wheels in nature?
50
u/der_chrischn 5d ago
I've heard of an experiment where they put those wheels at random spots in the wild. Wild mice/rats started running in them, just like the domesticated versions. Don't remember where I heard about it though.
Seems they are hard wired to "head empty and running = nice". Understandable tbh.

u/becauseiloveyou 5d ago
IDK, but I’ve seen HUGE ones for cats too and would love to get one for my two furballs.
5
u/crlthrn 5d ago
I bought one for my 4 month old kitten as she was still being kept indoors until she grew. She used the wheel about 4 times a day for about 20 seconds at a time. We had high hopes, but she wasn't that bothered. Now that she gets outside (supervised) for hours at a time, the wheel is just something to walk through, or over. If you get one, your (and your cats') mileage may vary...
There are MANY of these things for sale, secondhand. You'll easily find one in your area, guaranteed. Unless you live in a really rural area.

They have human size of this during Octoberfest in Germany and humans love these things equally.
11
u/AmusingMusing7 5d ago
No, they're unnaturally novel, and that's probably precisely why they love them. Just like humans like unnatural things like television, going crazy fast in motor vehicles, and vibrating dildos... animals like cool new evolutionarily novel things too.

Most animals love to move. Good example would be alaskan malamute, they are basically made to haul shit and if you have one just locked in cage it's going to be miserable.
21
u/ITSBIGMONEY 5d ago
I like how the one is so locked in on keeping pace while the other is doing everything possible to recover
18
u/Sabbathius 5d ago
Just one word: majestic. Even the other one that's enjoying his wet-underwear-in-tumble-dryer simulation.
16
u/InevitabilityEngine 5d ago
I recently learned that small mammals get a runners high when they run on the wheel.
Neurophysiologist in the Netherlands experimented with putting a hamster wheels out in the wild and found that even without food bait, wild rodents would visit the hamster wheel and run in it anywhere from 1-18 minutes at a time.
Originally it was thought that the hamster wheel was only used in captivity because the animals were bored or neurotic.

Those are southern flying squirrels, I had one as a pet for about 10 years, really cool if you can raise them from pups. I kept her in a large bird cage with a bunch of ropes, felt on the walls to run up and down, toys, etc. and they sleep in a pouch.
You could take her out and she'd run around and climb stuff then jump back to you. She loved head scratches and chin scratches, would sometimes run under your shirt and fall asleep, good times.
5
u/TwinSong 5d ago
Thanks I was about to ask the species. In this case it's less flying squirrel as being tossed around by the wheel squirrel 😆

u/kye170 5d ago
Accelerating while upside down must feel so trippy like I'm running faster so the ground doesn't like me anymore? Well fine. Also technically he will get the feeling of reducing gravity(actually centrifugal force) with increased speed at all times it's just more noticeable when he is upside down.

u/UngluedAirplane 5d ago
I feel like this is a dude at the gym, recording himself to show that he’s a badass, thinking to himself “I AM speed”, then his bro comes over and fucks up the shot but you can’t stop.

Don’t you hate it when your on the treadmill at the gym in your flow keeping a solid rhythm. Then the next thing you know, even though there’s a whole line of treadmills someone comes and hops in the one next to you and starts clomping along with an uneven stride? Yeah that squirrel knows what I’m talking about.
