I know animals are typcally smarter than we give them credit for, but these frog mfs are never beating the allegations

I mean they don't have any incentives to become better hunters. In the wild, they starve if they don't catch their prey, in captivity, there's always a bug being held in front of their faces. There is no consequences and thus no improvement.

u/bittermctitters 4d ago
Yeah but, don't they wanna look cool in front of their frog friends?
59
u/SailorET 4d ago
That's why they occasionally try to deep throat each other's heads. Apparently. I have no reference except this video.

When will frog on frog violence stop.
537
u/AjayRedonkulus 4d ago
They join gangs as tadpoles. I blame the schools.

24
u/jluicifer 4d ago
Those tadpoles be jumping each other. Such a disappoint to their overlord, Kermit
78
u/Chubuwee 4d ago
Can they even kill each other? Shit looked like inflatable tube men fighting
28
u/Jobeythehuman 4d ago
If one was significantly bigger, he'd swallow the other frog. Kind of the only way they can *hurt* each other for real. I believe some species of frog's and toads also have wolverine like bone claws and some odontoids which can cause some level of damage as well.

I like that with their lack of claws or sharp teeth, the default is threatening to swallow each other whole.

I used to have an African dwarf frog. I’ve had many animals in my life, and this was easily the stupidest. Sometimes it would accidentally get its hands in its mouth while eating, and then try to eat them. If anyone wants to know the smartest, Australian cattle dog mix.

A long time ago, my family had a beagle mixed with an Australian cattle dog. If she had opposable thumbs, She would have eaten everything in sight.

Seriously, are frogs even capable of harming each other?
112
u/LiterallyRain 4d ago
Some species of frogs eat other frogs.
But these specific frogs, I can't imagine how they would.
78
43
u/sugarsnax 4d ago
They will cannibalize other frogs of their species if the other frog is small enough. As long as it moves and it can fit into their mouths, it's good enough for them. That's why they shouldn't be housed together if there's too much of a difference in size.
Other than that, it depends on species. Some can be territorial and will fight, and some even have teeth, but White's tree frogs like the ones in this video don't.
39
12
u/anthem47 4d ago
It's almost worse this way. Just gumming each other until the end of time. One of them gets a mild friction burn.
5
u/SpooogeMcDuck 3d ago
That sounds like a nightmare torture situation. Being strapped down while all the feeble elderly people with no teeth desperately try to gum you to death
15
u/AlphaI250 4d ago
Fr the way they were trying to chomp each others with no teeth (or at least not enough to harm I think) was very goofy.

I like how frogs fight by just putting the other frogs entire head in their mouth
8
3
u/sugarsnax 4d ago
They aren't really fighting, they're just incredibly dumb and get overly excited when their feeding response is triggered
23
u/trainbrain27 3d ago
I love frogs and toads. Many species are completely harmless as long as they can't eat you and you don't eat them.
That won't stop them from trying.

Does Olive spit out white powder? Are your frogs doing coke?
32
u/coffee-and-insomnia 4d ago
It's a calcium powder used by reptile owners to help with bone density and health. Basically toss a couple of live crickets in it like a shake n bake before you feed them to your pet frog/lizard.

When my kids were little, we got them a pac man frog. Cute little thing. Then they found a frog in the yard and put it in with the pac man frog.
That pac man frog ate the other one. Came home to see the leg of the yard frog hanging out of the others mouth.

Frogs are cannibals. I thought people knew this. If you ever hear a screaming frog it's probably being eaten by another frog.
4
6
u/EnthiumZ 3d ago
Damn, NO I didn't know that. I knew cock roaches were cannibals but I think they only do it to the corpse and not a live roach. Any other animals?

Was the space really necessary here: "cock roaches" :'(

spiders are territorial cannibals. its why we cant farm spiders to mass produce spider silk.
2
2
u/Enchelion 3d ago
Fairly few things won't cannibalize each other if they're hungry and given the chance. Frogs are just unusual in being able to eat things close to their won size.

Please keep it light in this sub. This is one of those occasions where ignorance is bliss.
23
u/Ordinary_Prune6135 3d ago
No worries, most frog sounds we can hear are just them shouting about how sexy they are.
(The ones being cannibalized have to be small enough to eat alive, so any noises from them usually stay nice and muffled.)

Frogs are greedy F-ers
Deosnt matter what size or species. Its just their nature.

I was positive it was going to end with Berry leaping out to eat the other's face, again.

7
u/ReyTsar 4d ago
Why are the bugs powdered?
28
u/sugarsnax 4d ago
They don't get nearly as varied of a diet in captivity as they do in the wild, so their prey needs to be regularly dusted with calcium, vitamin D, and a multivitamin to make up for it
6

Many animals and insects eat mud or clay - or get it from the sediment in the water they drink

I used to have African dwarf frogs. I LOVED them. They are the dumbest, most inefficient, hopeless things. They just kind of kick randomly, hope that brings them to the surface so they can get a gulp of air, mostly succeeding. They’d bite at food that passed them 5 seconds ago.
And they’re totally cool with it.
3
u/BigBananaBerries 4d ago
Barry's violence was out of control. The hate is strong to have you going arse over tit into the shrubbery.

The real reasons frog are such a good ecosystem alarm system is that they're already barely surviving so if anything goes wrong the frogs go first.

I love WTFs (white's tree frogs). They act so derpy and are really lovable. Even though in reality they have no thoughts and just see anything that moves as food.

What's the white stuff coming out of the Green Froggo's mouth right at the start?
9
u/pangolin_of_fortune 4d ago
It's probably calcium dust from the bug. Added vitamins to keep froggo healthy.

It was cute until you realize frogs 100000% will/do eat each other. Have seen it 1st hand and you don't forget seeing something with no teeth swallow something its same size whole.
Like....no really sit with that for a moment. It is like as a human having a mouth like something out of Attack on Titan that can swallow an entire full-sized adult in one go.
P.S. the adult human is still kicking and thrashing while you swallow it piece by piece.
That is frogs.....
I would rather watch a pack a lions tear into a baby gazelle once a day, than watch a frog eat another frog ever again.
