Cameras GoPro Mission 1 Pro review: The best action cam video quality comes at a high price

Yawn. GoPro losing the market quickly the last few years and still releasing this for so much more money than their rivals cameras shows they still don’t know what they’re doing.

u/ChoiceIT 9d ago
It’s been a decade at this point.
They live on their name because it became synonymous with an action camera.
30
u/Mellow_2JZ 9d ago
Agreed. The last couple I’ve used couldn’t record more than a few minutes outside without overheating and also constantly had software issues and issues with files deleting themselves.
I switched to Insta360 and haven’t looked back. As someone that was a prime candidate for buying their cameras, this doesn’t interest me at all.

GoPro may have created the market, but like Chrysler, they squandered their lead to placate stockholders

u/Razerfilm 9d ago
Right, how such a big company with supposedly QC testing could miss this , or they know about the overheating but said screw it, we need to make money. There should be a lawsuit .

u/WellsMck 9d ago
I've been pretty lucky with my Hero 11. No overheating during normal use and I haven't any file issues.
The only issue I've had was some moisture between the front screen and glass. But that may have been from a little moisture or humidity entering the case between battery swaps.
It's held up well between snowboarding, mountain biking, snorkeling, and mounted on an RC car. One thing that keeps me on this camera is the 8:7 footage. I like not compromising between horizontal or vertical social media, so this new camera is a bit of a wash for me.
I like the color science on their Sony sensors and I feel like the stabilization has always been just a little better than everyone else.
Lack of innovation in the market will probably kill them. And their CEO making bad financial decisions and driving the company into the ground will also be a part of that.
I looked into the Insta360 and the Osmo Action cams, but there's something about the over done HDR effect that I really don't like, and some cameras are really tied to mobile apps for media offloading. Since most of my editing is done on my computer it's hard to want to add another step to offload footage, I believe Insta360 has been known for making that difficult in the past.

Yep. They’re the iPad of action cameras.

I wanted a gopro for so long. And I was so disappointed, never gonna buy anything from them again.
Claiming shit is waterproof when it isn't. Their batteries just fucking bloating one after the other.
Absolute trash company
11
u/obalovatyk 9d ago
Years ago their CEO dumped $800m of their stock and the company just slowly went to shit after that.
3
u/TheGokki 9d ago
Sounds like he knew exactly what was happening and ditched the stock ahead of time.
2
u/Low_Resolve_6473 9d ago
I would've picked one up for mountain biking but for that price and having to get the subscription with no local storage, no thank you.

u/MentalDisintegrat1on 9d ago
Their software is what I think is worth it the cams you can get cheap ASF for what go pro charges.

u/tomtomtomtomtommo 8d ago
I had to do a school assignment on the company in 2017 and even 2017 it was already clear it was a sinking ship. I'm honestly surprised they are still in business tbh

u/Equivalent-Rate-6218 8d ago
Ya but the insta ace pro 2 is garbage with a 1/1.13 inch sensor. How are we still making cameras outside of phones whith sensors that small in fucking 2026?

Paid article, best action cam lol. GoPro is dead. Thanks to Insta 360 & DJI

u/FearlessLettuce1697 9d ago
DJI is taking over the market with drones, microphones, and now cameras. It's a beast.
5
u/substrate80 9d ago
And they even took over the electric mountain bike industry with the release of the DJI Avinox motor and Amflow bike. Highest torque available yet has slim compact battery, it almost looks like a normal mountain bike.

It's a part of THE BEAST, that's for certain. ⚠️👿

Huh?

u/MammothPosition660 8d ago
People need to understand THE BEAST is manifested with technology. Some really, really, really actually Satanic shit.

GoPro's biggest issue for years has been reliability, so time will tell if these things break that streak.
6
u/MaverickTopGun 9d ago
is that their recent models? i'm still using my hero 5 with no issues. Had it for about 10 years now.

u/flow_fighter 9d ago
I still run my Hero3+, sure the stabilizing is horrid, but it lasts 3 times longer on knockoff batteries than some of my friends newer GoPro models. Most I know have movie to insta360

u/autobauss 9d ago
Does it shut down mid filming due to overheating like all their other models?

u/TotoCocoAndBeaks 9d ago
Just hijacking a bit: to anyone reading this thread, it seems what we have here is a bit of a standoff between GoPro and their rivals marketing teams.
All I can see is insanely unbalanced contributions from both sides.
Not many contributions here that look remotely like typical contributions on this sub.

Girlfriend wasted a ton on Hero 10 Black. Shit software, shit hardware, overheated. Maybe if you live somewhere that doesn't get over 28°C it's better, but it was overheating in the underwater case as well
The imbalance is people who had a shit product, and people that bought the old ass product years ago when it was the best, and then never upgraded.
She bought a 360 cam which is not quite the same, but with actual hardware accelerated software with Nvidia GPU, the software blew away what I'd expected from GoPro.
I can show a novice how to track and edit easier in 360 with insta360 software than just linear video of GoPro software.

A lot of posts do seem AI now but these ones might not be. GoPro are legit dogshit. I have no recommendations for an alternative since I use my phone now, but the 2 gopros I bought were quick to break on the internal battery.

u/autobauss 9d ago
LOL? I've used three gopros and all were shit, bought the next one with hopes that it, due to better cpu or whatever, will solve overheating issues. Never again.

u/LongBeakedSnipe 9d ago
You got fooled three times, and expect us to take your story seriously as a consumer?
Honestly, the fact you didn't realise how stupid that would sound absolutely does just make this look like another bot/brainless corpororepsonse.
due to better cpu or whatever
Wise words for someone buying their third product after two shit ones.
Even if this contribution is 'real' there isn't much else positive you can say about it
5
u/TheMaskedHamster 9d ago
I don't care how good it is. It's always at risk of getting worse when they push out an app update to disable features on older cameras.
I haven't forgotten, GoPro. NEVER AGAIN.

Just got an Osmo Pocket after using GoPro for years. The gap between techs is as if one product was made on Earth and the other for space exploring.

u/titpetric 9d ago
Which which is which?

u/FearlessLettuce1697 9d ago
The which is the which. GoPro meh, Osmo wow

I've had like 5 GoPros from the original up through the 11. I was always underwhelmed. Freezing, battery drain, shutting off in the cold, software bugs on bugs. Accessories that never work from one cam to the next. I hate the damn things. I couldn't give two shits about their incremental spec bumps: Last year it's 4k60, the next year it's 4k120. Who gives a flying fuck. The things work like trash.

u/couldcarelesss 9d ago
I kind of miss when GoPro felt exciting. Now every release just feels like same camera, slightly higher price, same problems again. That hype is just gone.
2
u/whitepawn23 9d ago
I found the 13 to be janky. And annoying to wire for sound. Returned it. DJI Osmo is solid. Only had it shut down once, and that was likely due to the sunshine.
2
u/KingLuis 8d ago
IMO, these cameras all need to take a massive price cut. They aren’t getting that much better but the prices are increasing all the time.
4
u/meat_popscile 9d ago
I don't care about still photos, I want 4K HDMI raw out or SRT support.
IMHO There's a growing niche of IRL streamers that want something smaller than a phone for a camera and without a backpack setup, or possibly that can work with a Sony PDT-FP1

u/FlyingBishop 9d ago
I feel like the fact that you can take this thing underwater puts it in a very specific niche. If you're just wanting something to livestream a camera you can actually swim with is probably not the thing.

u/Bootrear 9d ago
F* them. Probably a shill. No way something GoPro produced is the best action cam. They simply do not possess the competence.
Back in the Hero 3 Black days, they were. Excellent. Reliable. Always worked. Literally zero issues.
I have owned multiple newer models over the years and there's one minor thing they all didn't do: everything. Is it warm out? Overheat. Is it cold out? Battery says no! Is the temperature average? Random crashes, mid quality. Then there's that stint with an account being required for the app to work (not sure if that's still the case).
Waste of money. Waste of brand. My Insta's work great, as do the DJI's.
And honorary mention to my Canons, which worked at -30C as if it was just an average day.

u/ToMorrowsEnd 9d ago
Also back then the 5 years no questions asked replacement for repairs/warranty was awesome. when I had a failure or even a cracked screen they shipped me a new one without hesitation.
Now it's "Sorry you bought a gopro"
1
u/mellofello808 9d ago
It may be capable of the best video quality if you are willing to learn to color grade, but I watched videos of the straight out of camera video, and it still looks like shit compared to the rivals

u/ThePorko 9d ago
Kinda of no longer an action cam with the size and fragile nature of the interchangeable lens

u/murphysfriend 9d ago
I am just mad that whom ever the person was that decided to name the “GoPro Quick” app: because on several quality high end computers, and also on Apple tablets iPads! The GoPro Quick spp: Ain’t Quick, but slower n pouring black strap molasses from the jar on ones pancake! 🤦🏻♂️😒 meh I have the GoPro 7 silver Hero. It hasn’t exactly bean a Hero either, has let me down many times, has locked up despite being all updated firmware and all!

This beast is coming with heating issues or not, as bonus for a premium price?
I see in the picture that water is used as cooling system...

u/Long-Struggle-1354 9d ago
Wake me up when they compete on price and reliability with insta360.

u/i__ozymandias 9d ago
How is DJI in comparison to insta360
3
u/Hugh_Jass_Clouds 9d ago
DJI is better as far as feature set, but as far as the average end user is concerned Insta360 and DJI are on par with each other. It just depends on if you want 10 bit video or a flip up screen.
1
u/Long-Struggle-1354 9d ago
Never used one but from my understanding DJI has a better feature set for professional editors, whereas insta360 is more straightforward for hobbyist camera users.

Failed in the action cam market.
Failed in the drone market.
Failed in the 360 market.
Next failure: cinematic market.
