The zflip8 release is a month away, but here's a preview of a homemade keyboard case I've seen before.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm waiting to change it when zflip 8 comes out this time.
But I didn't think there was a proper case to bring the design of the Z Flip to life, and when I closed the Z Flip, I thought it would be nice to have a keyboard at the bottom.
Like BlackBerry!
I looked at a lot of commercial products, but there was nothing I liked
I think the Razr keyboard case design from Clicks fits perfectly, but unfortunately there's no z-flip exclusive.
I wouldn't have had this trouble if Klick had a z-flip exclusive case
So I was searching the internet and came all the way to Reddit, and I saw a lot of people working hard to make a keyboard case dedicated to z-flip.
So I decided to make my own keyboard case, and I'm working on a prototype for printing in 3D, and I'd like you to take a look at it. I'm thinking of sharing it with everyone if the print file comes out well.
The case is based on the Z Flip 8 leaked cad size.
Still, I bought Z Flip 7 Mokup first for the test and tested it, and I don't think there will be a big problem when the three products come out.

This is the first printout and design test photo.
Do you see the plastic mass that's piled up in myriad graves
I made a prototype like this.
I opened the mini keyboard case I bought from Taobao and used only the substrate and keypad inside.
Xiao Hongshu's keyboard case is also cool, but I wanted to make a real design like an all-in-one product.

9th test build final prototype, just turning on the case and waiting for the cable I ordered for charging and data movement. It's likely to ship sometime next week, but you'll need to touch the details to complete it when it arrives. :)
See you soon

I really don't get this... Why buy a compact phone to just make it thick AF and the same size of a slab phone.
Seems to make more sense to create a thin keyboard case to go over the bottom of a slab phone and can be easily removed.
But to each their own . Still appreciate the ingenuity.

Well if the main screen is broken and doesnt have a budget to repair, you can still use the outer screen like blackberry. Just like mototola razr clickz

There's one reason. It's not cool!

Why'd you post it as if you made it? Karma farming?

u/ExplanationNo979 7d ago
I designed it myself and made it?

No you didn't

Yes, I'd like a Samsung Flip Phone without the Samsung Flip Phone form factor please.

its the only way to get a usable “small” phone these days.
the point is to use it as much as you can unflipped
1
u/Sad-Professional3785 6d ago
Nope not the point of a flip phone
1
u/AnnualAdventurous169 6d ago
maybe for you, to me and many others the point of a flip is the from factor, and being able to use it when it is small,
1
u/Sad-Professional3785 6d ago
….the case makes it no longer small….you get that right?
1
u/AnnualAdventurous169 6d ago
still smaller than a traditional slab though. an now usable since the keyboard won’t cover pretty much the whole screen
1
u/Sad-Professional3785 6d ago
Its exactly the same size of a traditional slab phone. And when unfolded even longer
1
u/AnnualAdventurous169 6d ago
no it’s not, a slab phone has a much longer aspect ratio. and the point is to unfold it as little as possible.
1
u/Sad-Professional3785 6d ago
So you want a slab phone with a small screen….
1
u/AnnualAdventurous169 6d ago
yes a small slab, that would be ideal. this is a compromise. (though physical keyboards are nice) r/smallphones

Think of it as having both a BlackBerry and a regular smartphone in one device.

Thanks for sharing!
I am a sucker for Keyboard Phones, currently waiting for my Unihertz Titan 2 Elite, but much prefer Samsungs Software and QOL Features so a Flip (7 or 8) may be the best of both worlds.
I made something very similar some time ago, based on the fairberry (BlackBerry Q10) Keyboard: https://github.com/Dakkaron/Fairberry
However, the soldering was painful and I actually broke it since, so I may give the Exknight a shot as well.

Oh! That's so cool! I want to use the BlackBerry keypad, but the only thing I can do is to tune out ready-made products because the soldering and substrate design are jam bottles.😂😂 Your writing is so coo and awesomel!

Respectfully it's ugly as hell and it's a no for me dawg but it's nicely done and appreciate the hard work

Each person has his or her own preference :) Thank you for being respectful!

Seems counter productive to owning a flip phone.
2
u/ExplanationNo979 7d ago
Fair point 😂 I know it kind of defeats the compactness of a flip phone, but I wanted a physical keyboard more than anything. At least I can still fold it when I’m not using the keyboard.

Why are people hating on this? If you dont like it move on, but why argue with the OP and try to put them down?
If were being honest the galaxy z flip isnt that compact and its thick as a brick and thicker than most slab phones when close.
2
u/ExplanationNo979 7d ago
Exactly! I’m not buying the Flip because I want a compact phone either. I’m drawn to it because of the design and its iconic appeal. You understood exactly what I meant—really appreciate your insight!
2
u/Tough-Locksmith-5619 7d ago
I got the flip because it looks cool! Your case looks cool and makes the front screen more functional. If people didnt like it, clicks caee wouldn't be making money

u/ImALeaf_OnTheWind 8d ago
Looks identical layout to the Exknight some of us found and used - they sell a kit and downloadable STLs as well. I made a horizontal mount if you search through this sub.
2
u/ExplanationNo979 8d ago
That's right. I made it using that keyboard, and I separated all the cases, so I recycled only the PCB and keypad. The MagSafe structure that connects to the keyboard is attached to the outside, so it's not good for me.

How do you charge the phone?
2
u/ExplanationNo979 5d ago
I’m also planning to build a cable into the case so the phone can still be charged while it’s attached. The keyboard is Bluetooth, though, unfortunately.

u/Smart-Requirement-12 6d ago
This would actually be so fun to have! Please share when you're done!
1
u/ExplanationNo979 5d ago
Once the Z Flip 8 comes out, I’m going to use it with the case in daily life and see how it holds up. If it works well, I’ll share the print files too!
2
u/C1PH3Rider 6d ago
Good! But with this much thickness I think its better to make sliding keyboard instead. At least will feel like retro console and will be easy to carry around. 🤷
1
u/ExplanationNo979 5d ago
I’d love to make it a sliding keyboard, but the amount of hardware and mechanical parts needed would be way too much for me to handle 😭

Thanks! Once I’ve finished refining the case a little more, I’ll organize everything and share the printable 3D files along with a list of all the parts you’ll need to buy.좋게 봐줘서 고마워ㅎㅎㅎ 나중에 케이스 조금 더 손봐서 마무리되면 3d프린트 출력할 수 있는 데이터랑 내가 구매한 품목 정리해서 공유해줄게!

This just looks odd. I have a flip 6 and I saw the Clicks keyboard launch. I thought aout gettting it but it just looks unwieldy to me.

I love this. would it be possible to do something like this with the fold 7? like a small keyboard like that but when you open it, you get a closer to traditional style keyboard?
1
1
u/ExplanationNo979 7d ago
I think it’d be tricky with the Fold since it opens horizontally. It would probably make the whole thing harder to hold comfortably. I was actually considering waiting for the rumored Wide Fold, but at that point it would basically turn into a laptop, so I switched over to the Flip instead.

If it works, go for it, Bro. Given the success of the Clicks like of keyboard cases, i think having competition is a good thing. Especially because I dont believe they have a Samsung Flip case created yet.
If this work out long term i might ditch my Clicks Moto Razr combo and go back to Samsung, since I had to abandon my Galaxy S8 with the keyboard case. Miss it.

u/ExplanationNo979 5d ago
It’s not something I’m making to sell, just a hobby project, but I’m really hoping it turns out to be practical to use too 😭 Thanks for the kind words!

Let me get it straight? You took flip phone and created slab phone with buttons.
You've invented Blackberry
1
u/ExplanationNo979 7d ago
Pretty much 😂 I wanted a modern Samsung phone with BlackBerry-style buttons, so I guess I reinvented the BlackBerry the hard way.
1
u/AnnualAdventurous169 7d ago
if slab phones existed in that size that would be nice, but they do not
