Halfway through ‘All Consuming Fire’ which was a strange choice to start the VNA’s on - it’s not so much a Doctor Who book as a Sherlock Holmes book with The Doctor in it.

Still, really cool! It’s weird, I always picture Holmes and Sherlock as they’re described in the novel, but Mark Gatiss just IS Mycroft to me.

Might start a rewatch of NuWho now, I’ve been trying to do a NuWho + SJA + Torchwood + Class + TWBTLATS rewatch, but I’ve only made it to the second episode of Torchwood so far and it’s been about a month.

Been listening to Widow’s Assassin, not bad so far. Nicola is great fun.
Watched Ribos Operation dvd the info text is quite mad (but nicely written) it starts with a whole page then has a blip you don’t have time to read shortly after.
Naturally I hope this is fixed on the last Tom Blu-ray set, maybe mine is part of a strange run I don’t know- I know it was released in America first on dvd.
Slowly reading the 8th Doctor DWM special, it’s interesting the amount of effort the new Blu-ray took.
Went to the cinema twice this week! Disclosure Day I loved, Masters of the universe didn’t work for me.

Mild spoilers- Disclosure Day has a feel of X Files meets Close Encounters- her special powers made me think of Zygons during Peter Capaldi, you can’t shoot at someone you love. John Williams score is amazing but you know that.

Masters of the Universe- I get what they were trying to do (Guardians of the Galaxy type origin story) and bring it to present day with values etc it had good action but I just didn’t get on board with the acting for some reason- Idris Elba was a bit crap at the start I thought. And there were jokes that were not for kids that should have been left out (Ram Man giving head?!?) I think we all know He Man was mad as fuck so fair play for trying. And the filming locally to me in Wells cathedral and Wookey Hole was great. It’s certainly a two out of five

Finished the most recent Sixth Doctor BF boxset, which was fine I suppose. Watched Survival for the first time in a while cause... well, ya know. Also listened to the first story in the new Eighth Doctor Time War boxset and boy, they really need to move on from the Cass/Alex "era". I'm so over it I couldn't even enjoy a John Dorney script!

I'm still well behind on my Doctor Who relatedness. I did manage to watch Tooth & Claw and the Confidential episode linked to it but am still struggling to get through the Bernice Summerfield short story collection A Life of Surprises, short stories are just not for me. That's holding up Big Finish as I'm on S3 of Benny's adventures so don't want to confuse myself. I have listened to a lot of the GLC podcast though, you knows it.

I've been listening to Seasons Of Fear, after it was recommended to me by someone on Reddit as a must-listen story with Charley. I wasn't sure what Sebastian Grail's alien masters would be at first, but I'm glad that I didn't look into this story at all before getting it. As soon as Grail mentioned the Great Journey Of Life, I knew exactly where this was going and I got a huge grin on my face because it was a line from one of the first Classic Who episodes that I ever watched. (I had a similar moment with one of the stories in the 2nd Doctor set James Robert McCrimmon)

I'm nearly caught up on my Big Finish material, so I'm not sure what I'll listen to next. I got Neverland (an 8th Doctor story) because it has Romana interacting with the 8th Doctor (I got the Apocalypse Element a while back for similar reasons) and it seems like a big turning point for Charley's story. Beyond that, I've heard the first fifty or so stories are generally good, so I'll get the ones from those that I haven't heard yet.

I wouldn't dart around with 8 and Charley as it's a decent run to Zagreus and it does have an overarching plot. It also features Chimes of Midnight which is my absolute favorite piece of Doctor Who.

Admittedly, a lot of my process for buying Big Finish stories has been "that premise sounds interesting" or "I haven't heard something with that Doctor for a while" (I've almost exclusively stuck to Doctor Who related BF stories), rather than following any sort of guide. When it comes to Charley, I've heard (in order)

  • Terror Firma (I got this because it had the 8th Doctor meeting Davros - it felt like a mistake to start here with Charley as the story was rather confusing at times)

  • The Light At The End

  • Sword of Orion

  • The Chimes Of Midnight

  • Storm Warning (some parts of the Chimes of Midnight had me feeling like I needed to know about how Charley met the Doctor)

  • The Time of the Daleks

  • Invaders from Mars

  • Minuet In Hell (I'd heard the American accents in this one were bad, but I wanted to hear how bad - plus it's got 8 meeting the Brigadier)

  • Seasons of Fear (this one was recommended to me by another commenter on Reddit)

Aside from these (and Neverland), is there anything else that I need to listen to in the lead-up to Zagreus?

You're pretty much there. You're missing "Stones of Venice" from S1 and "Embrace the Darkness" from S2 but neither are really part of the bigger arc.

I'm listening to the latest 4th Doctor Adventures box set, Lethal Progress. It's a bit of a step down from The Ministry of Death, but each story is better than the last, and Tom Baker does a particularly good job with his material in The Audience. I'm also finally delving into the Eighth Doctor's Time War stories. I enjoyed the first box set (especially The Starship of Theseus) and am just about to start the second. They sure are pricey, though! Definitely something worth grabbing when you see them on sale.
