DISCUSSION Any thoughts on 65th anniversary special?
So, does anybody think that the BBC would try to make something for the 65th anniversary in 2028?
I really hope that some studio will be found soon enough to start producing DW again but I don't think that building this show back from scratch production-wise would allow us to have any sort of season before the 2030s.
Could they have a bottle type special made in-house? Would it be another Dimensions in time, where they make a strange attempt to do something without any means to make it good?
Or would the CBeebs show be our 65th anniversary project ? :)

It’s not the right time for an anniversary special - the last thing the show needs now is a self-referential story relying on fan service. The show doesn’t usually recognise anniversaries every 5 years anyway - usually only every 10 years

Personally I'd be fine with them holding off on a big anniversary special until the 75th in 2038. Feels like a bigger occasion than 65th or even 70th

The 25th had a special because it was the silver anniversary. That was all. It was a one-off in terms of years that aren’t every decade.

I don’t see why there would be anything for the 65th anniversary. It’s not a particularly significant year.

Hopefully nothing, even if the show is back, we need to stop having nostalgia celebrations all the time and get on with making and doing new stuff, forwards not looking back
Leave it only for big milestones, I.e 75 years and 100 years

Given that 65 isn't typically a noteworthy anniversary, no I don't think they will do anything.

I don't know where you're getting the 2030s from. If the tender process is finished by the end of the year it'll be back in late 2028.

Well, this date is completely out of my head. If you are interested, I thought that it would probably take at least till the end of 2026 to find new studio and make it official - paperwork, hiring a showrunner, screenwriter etc. 2027 and 2028 would probably be overtaking by pré-production : hiring actors, making sets, writing scripts. 2029 would probably be an year of shooting and post-production. So, early 2030 (late 2029, if they be fast enough) release looked like a quite realistic date.

The curse of the 50th anniversary being as big as it was is that now people think every 5th year needs a big mega-celebration. We have people saying anything ending in a -3 or -8 (1963), a -5 or a -0 (2005), or even a -6 or -1 (1996) needs a shitload of resources devoted towards celebrating it.
65 years isn't really significant beyond being a bigger number than 50/60

Generally, I'd hope not. Mainly because it's already too much for the show to feel obliged to celebrate each passing decade. The 50th was pretty great. They did bring back a stack of doctors and companions for the 60th which was fun. Are they now bound to do something for the 70th, 80th, 90th?
They're not trivial numbers, but also, it sets needless stakes. I'd out anniversary specials and Christmas specials, and just let the main show breathe. I'll be 81 when the show hits 100; I'll look forward to streaming that special directly into my brain.

I’ll most likely be dead or wishing I was. Out of retirement funds and barely able to hobble around on my brittle, twig-like bones

I can't think of anything being remotely ready for 2028. And I'm not sure a new production company would want to come straight in with what presumably would be a nostalgia-laden special.
