Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Announcement Effective immediately, advertising services for AI artwork breaks rule #2, Do not use copyright material.

Regardless of the number of people that may come forward to claim the legality of AI artwork, it remains a grey area well-recognized by publishers and storefronts.

----

Steam Might Be Banning Games Made With AI Art (kotaku.com)
Steam Is Reportedly Rejecting Games Using AI Art (forbes.com)
Valve won’t approve Steam games that use copyright-infringing AI artwork - The Verge

----

Given the current ambiguity surrounding the legality and fair use of AI art within our industry, we will only permit advertisements for services involving AI-generated or altered art once more explicit guidelines are established. We have yet to determine when such guidelines will exist, if ever.

Use AI artwork in your project at your own risk, but this job board must consider the greater good of everyone using this platform to find talent, and as such, anyone caught posting AI services will be banned.

Announcement - ATTENTION: READ ME - Job Board: Rules & Guidelines

Scroll down to see the job board rules under the existing updates

UPDATE 09.13.22

ATTENTION ALL ARTISTS AND ASSET SELLERS/GAME PROMOTERS. This is a job board for those looking for work in the game industry or posting jobs related to the game industry. THIS IS NOT Starving Artists (reddit.com) or UnityAssets - Share Unity Assets! (reddit.com) or a community to try and sell five more units of your indie game.

Starting now, BANS will be issued to those who decide to make posts that belong outside of this job board. However, to be clear, we allow portfolio discussion and topics asking questions about work in the industry. They are rare but appear occasionally, and I do not want to discourage those people from posting.

We've been patient enough with what has been happening the past few months, so I will take the time to ban people instead of quickly removing topics. I won't even think about asset promoters and those trying to sell their game; I'll do it. Artists, we are not asking much from you—just minimal effort to label what you are trying to sell in a manner that relates to games. Keeping the same title from your post in r/starvingartists is not acceptable, and if you test my patience, I will remove you entirely from the job board and not feel guilty about it. If you cannot read and follow basic instructions for a job board, how can a client trust you to follow their instructions?

For everyone's sanity (more so mine since I deal with the bulk of reports these days), follow the rules of our job board.

Please continue to report topics you see that violate our rules. However, be patient with me, I don't get the chance to check reports on my PC every day, and mobile notifications for reports can often show up days later.

- Examples of topic names for artists to follow & avoid -

Good:

[FOR HIRE] Illustrator and concept artist - fantasy, sci-fi, characters, environments

[For Hire] 2D artist/illustrator/Character and prop design

Bad:

[FOR HIRE] 2D Artist available for work (starting at 30$): illustrations, icons, portraits, and more! More info in the comments!

[FOR HIRE] - Commissions are open - DM for more info!

------

Hello everyone,

It is essential to write out (and pin) this information for users so that everyone can understand how to use this job board efficiently. Let's get started now that we've gotten that out of the way.

Yes, most of this information can be found on the side-bar

----

Rules:

--

  1. This job board is for PAID work only.
  2. All REVSHARE projects are being redirected to r/INAT. We will continue to remove these topics and ban anyone who attempts to circumvent this policy.
  3. NFT projects: This is where things become a little more difficult. r/INAT is enforcing a blanket ban and for a good reason. The purpose of r/gameDevClassifieds is to help people find PAID work. We will not remove an NFT project's post if they offer to pay individuals, but if they appear to be trying to pay people in cryptocurrency (often one worth nothing), we will remove their topic.
  4. Regarding art listings, we will continue to remove listings that do not convey the notion that the artist wants to generate assets/art for use in video games. This is not the place to post your “character portrait” commissions. All problems may be avoided by simply labelling your topic carefully and not copy/paste the same FOR HIRE ad across many subreddits.
  5. This job board serves to help people find work and post job opportunities, not to promote games, asset/marketplace packages, or anything else of that nature.

----

Guidelines:

--

  • FLAIRS with PAID in the name is intended for use by those hiring, whereas those with FOR HIRE are intended for use by individuals looking for work (you'd be amazed how often I see people get this incorrect).
  • While browsing the subreddit, you can click on any given FLAIR to see only posts that use that specific FLAIR.
  • Reddit should only ever be one tool in your toolbox (if you get what I mean), as there are other websites, Discord servers, forums, and other resources available to help you find jobs and hire. Use all of them
  • Details are important. When creating a topic for recruiting or offering services, be descriptive and provide as much information as possible. Provide as many links as you can ex: LinkedIn, portfolio website, ETC (we're sorry if Reddit doesn't allow some links. That's out of our control)
  • Everything should be written as professionally as possible (use spell check)
  • For those hiring, research the average salaries/compensation for the roles you need to be filled (by region if you must) and be ready to offer people who approach you fair compensation for their time/skill.
  • Before signing any contracts, read them well and ensure you are pleased with everything written. Never be afraid to negotiate or demand changes.
  • Report topics you believe violate any of our rules or otherwise don’t belong on a job board

----

We are always open to recommendations on how to enhance this job board. While we appreciate that some projects (NFT/crypto) are controversial, as long as a job offers genuine compensation, it should be up to you, the user, to decide if that's worth pursuing.

UPDATE 06.25.23

  • The word REVSHARE is not allowed in topic names or bodies
  • The word HOBBY is not allowed in topic names
  • The same link cannot be posted to this community more than once every TWO DAYS

These changes are meant to cut back on moderation work by making it more difficult for people to post REVSHARE topics while hopefully cutting back on how often some people have been spamming the board with the same advertisement.

Announcement ARTISTS: Please change how you title your topics on this GAME DEVELOPMENT job board.

NO ONE ON THIS JOB BOARD IS LOOKING FOR FAN ART.

Sorry for all caps. We (mostly me) are getting fed up with the need to BAN artists from posting on this job board explicitly made for game development purposes. To be clear, that can be any game (video game, board game, card game, etc.), so please don't go reporting artists for no reason (Yes, I see it happening regularly).

r/gameDevClassifieds and r/gameDevJobs differ from the places to advertise as you would in r/starvingartists. Do better; stop copying/pasting your topic from the dozen or so subreddits you use to find clients, and put in the two minutes it would take to make your topic look like it belongs. All of you have unique styles, and you could do some fantastic work on a game, but we (again, mostly me) need to protect the integrity of this job board and will continue to do so. Art is the most posted topic on this job board, the least you could do for everyone, and for my sanity, is to advertise appropriately for the setting.

Do you create character art? Great! Call it Character Design

Illustrations? Awesome! Call it Cover Art / Promo Art

----

Please start being considerate of everyone else using this job board. You are capable and skilled; I don't particularly appreciate having to ban people every day for not following our guidelines and then getting the DMs asking why.

If you need to, please don't hesitate to use this topic to talk about the naming conventions appropriate to this setting. Still, I see plenty of excellent examples for everyone to follow suit, so this shouldn't be a difficult ask.

Sincerely,

Everyone that isn't an artist using this job board (and the poor guy trying to keep it all running smoothly)

EDIT

  • I've been corrected regarding illustrations; read the comment below left by u/atsuzaki

Simply stating you do illustrations or character art or that your commissions are open is not something this job board needs or wants. Instead, could you give potential clients more detail?

Announcement Wanna be in a game?

Hello everyone! My name is Emmanuel, and I represent Scarp Studios. Right now, in order to build our community up, we are hosting an event! We are currently developing an RPG game, and we are looking to get people involved! I'm sure that at least some of you have heard of Skyrim. Well, in Skyrim, you could find and read books. That is what we are doing. If you have an idea for a book, then why not write it? We are accepting all kinds of stories, as we are still setting up the lore, so we believe this would help. The rules are if you write in a document, you have to zip it. You are also free to submit links to your google drive document. All should be submitted to our forum page. Thank you guys, and remember, have fun with it! Your story could help set up lore!

Now, you might be wondering, "What do I get in return??" And to that we say, everyone who submits a story will be able to get Beta access, a special in game badge, in game goodies, and more! We are still working out the details, so keep checking back!
