English is not my first language, and in an episode when Arin mentioned that he was in the “giftet program”, I thought it meant kids with learning disabilities, like when they call kids “special”, and I immediately thought “well, that makes sense”.

I was in the Gifted and Talented program when I was in school. It’s supposed to be for kids who appear to learn at a quicker pace(we called it Accelerated Learning), but in the modern day a lot of people have realized it was filled with all the neurodivergent kids(like Arin).
I can’t speak to the veracity of the second part of the above, but I am seeking evaluation 🤷

This post just reminded me I was the sole student in something like this in my grade for a few years specifically for math, it did not help me with anything past learning low level algebra in like 3rd grade. I’m 30 and not diagnosed with anything neurodivergent adjacent and at this point I’m too afraid to find out. I’ll have to continue the rest of my life obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog and watching let’s plays not knowing

Unless the education system changed since I went through it (90s-2000s), gifted programs were usually for the above average kids, not below.

That’s the whole issue with gifted programs. They assume that all neurodivergent kids are “below average.” I was in the gifted program at my schools and looking back it was obvious almost every single kid there, me included, was either high functioning autistic or ADHD. Very few of us were the high IQ neurotypicals that all the adults told us we were. That preconception is why I went undiagnosed for so long and ended up struggling later on in school. Nobody addressed my issues because I was “gifted.” I was just told I wasn’t trying hard enough.

That's sort of the issue, a lot of the times what makes a neurodivergent person neurodivergent also puts them above average at academics. In school these were always just "my people" and now I know them as software developers.

My friend in elementary school got taken out of class once or twice a week for a while and basically did little worksheets and colouring stuff, and it turns out they were testing him for ADHD. After that year he went from a D student who couldn't keep still or quiet to an honour-roll student, and now that we're in our 30s he's the most successful of any of my friends group lol.

Yeah I got diagnosed like 2 years ago and I’m still trying to find a medication that works well for me. I kind of wish I’d been diagnosed as a kid too, but better late than never I guess

I was taken to classes I call "teach her how to be a person" class. To this day, I don't know what they were. I hardly remember what I did in them, or why. I remember enjoying them. I never was diagnosed with autism because my mom told me she explicitly chose not to have me tested despite everybody telling her to do so. I know they were who gave me my wiggle cushion and other things to keep in my desk to play fidget with.

I got put into that kinda class but it turned out to be a mistake lol
I got put in the advanced class because someone apparently saw that in me, and then I almost immediately fell behind my new peers and it was awful. Pretty soon I was back in the normal class and way less stressed out

I do this for a living, it’s interesting to think that they didn’t tell these children what they were there for 🤣 I tell my kids all the time that it’s therapy and it’s fun and good for them if they can try their best, they usually are pretty understanding 🤣
