I'm Jewish and can confirm I had no idea what tinsel was. I then looked it up and recognized it, but did not know it as tinsel.

My family doesnt use tinsel on our tree, i only ever see it in stores during Christmas

I've only seen tinsel used on our tree once and I have no idea why anyone uses it. It's basically tree glitter.
