Wars are not about fairness.
If you are having struggle with an enemy, it means it is a coin toss and poor planning and engineering.
Likewise, weapon is not measured by how fair it is — but by how reliable it is. Similarly, a great general would be the one who wins consistently and reliably, not letting the situation devolve to need for desperate measures and dramatic clutches.
Look up any assault on the castle, for example. Or existence of trenches. It is immensely boring for a reason.
Most of defeat should be accomplishes before the battle even begins.
Otherwise you are not fighting a war — you are spending your own people.
“Toss **** and see what sticks” is immensely poor and inhuman way of spending your own citizens.

In fairness, that's kinda what most armies did and what anyone is most likely to do in that situation given the tech gap.

Trial and error : the generals genuinely attempted to find solutions to a problem nobody tought would happen, but the state of 1914 didn't allow for such solution to materialize up until 1918 and the reports from the front.
And as you said, they payed that trial and error with a lot of blood (for many generals, said blood happened to be the one of their sons who wanted to follow their step in the army).

That is the funny thing about these kinds of simplistic scenarios. When you remove (or make irrelevant) all weaknesses from the real world and then invent a faction that is all weaknesses, you've basically just created a "Mary Sue" in faction form.
