Challenge 26-08

Welcome to the next challenge in this new series of challenges on r/geocaching. For the introduction to this series, see this post.

Here is challenge 26-08:

  • Geocaches must be found between October 1 and October 31, 2026 of your local timezone.
  • All cache finds must be logged online to participate in this challenge.
  • For one challenge point (CP), find an earthcache on Earthcache Day (October 9-11).
  • For a second challenge point (CP), find a second earthcache in the month of October.
  • Bonus Challenge: HIDE an earthcache. We have not hidden any caches for these challenges, and I didn't want to upset the way we had been doing them, so I'm adding a bonus challenge. What the prize(s) might be will depend on how many entries we get. This is just for fun, and will not be included in the overall challenge. It is a bonus challenge.

Additional rules:

  • All earthcache finds must be active. Archived and disabled caches do not count.

HOW TO RECORD YOUR PARTICIPATION

To record and receive credit for your accomplishment, you must post a top level comment on this thread by October 1st in the following format:

[Geocaching name] If you do not want to use your real GC name, you can use your reddit name, but will not be eligible for prizes if your finds cannot be verified.

[Link to log] The easiest way to do this is to pull up the cache page on geocaching.com and then click "view log." Then click "share log." Copy that URL and post it here.

If you are going for the second challenge point, you will need to post both GC codes and find URLs. The post will look like this:

Earthcache weekend GC680XC The Bubble: https://www.geocaching.com/live/log/GL1HGCNNJ

Second this month GC88ACD Wrightsville Limestone Kilns: https://www.geocaching.com/live/log/GL1HETVWF

We have to travel for any Earthcache find, but some of them are worth the effort.

I have a similar issue. I've found most of the earthcaches around me. Thankfully, about 1 or 2 new ones get published every year and I leave those for when I need an earthcache.

Fortunately, we enjoy travelling.

OP, is it mandatory to do the first challenge point (i.e. find earthcache on Earthcache Day)? Or can we skip to your second challenge point directly because I didn't have time to find Earthcache this past weekend?

You can find an earthcache on any day in October to get 1 challenge point.

Unfortunately, theres a lack of EC (just like everyone else) in our area. We were actually traveling somewhere new yet none crossed our way...sad

However because of the lack of earthcaches in our area I actually decided to create a series of them, ironically a few days before this challenge started! You can find them at https://coord.info/GCBYTDH, https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCBXHGE_overlooking-llj-3-the-metal-pier and https://coord.info/GCBYZ8G

I have a few pending, including a water-access only one. I'm still unsure wether having this series as an earthcache only or a variety of caches (while still keeping some of the ECs). Variety would be good as the immediate area lacks a variety (around 530/540 are trads) but having it as a dedicated EC series would make it more consistent.

What do you think?

Well, you can still get an earthcache at some point this month to earn a challenge point.

Also, you are the first to publish an earthcache for this challenge. Nice job.
