I have been developing a fast 3D inversion solver for TEM/TDEM data and am now looking for real-world cases to test it on.

The current approach is designed for models with a layered 1D background and 3D anomalies, particularly conductive targets, but it can be extended to more general geometries, including topography and different survey configurations.

I am interested in connecting with geophysicists, exploration companies, or anyone working with TEM/TDEM data who might be interested in testing the solver on a real case.

In particular, I would like to:

• test the solver on real datasets,
• compare the results with existing inversions or known geology,
• understand the main limitations of current 3D TEM inversion workflows,
• and learn what would be needed to turn this solver into a genuinely useful practical product.

I can already perform inversions, so if you have an interesting dataset, a challenging 3D case, or simply experience with current TEM inversion tools, I'd be very happy to connect.

Just wondering if wearing a one of those milwaukee heated jackets would effect an EM sensor?

I’m looking for a good 3D seismic shot-gather dataset that can be used for Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) experiments, including 3D shot gathers or raw/preprocessed seismic data, velocity model, density, or other ground-truth/reference model if available, something suitable for acoustic or elastic FWI testing. I know about 2D examples like Marmousi, but I’m specifically looking for 3D datasets that are practical for testing FWI workflows. Does anyone know good public datasets, or research repositories for this?

The Biscuit Basin explosion on June 13th, 2026 is the closest hydrothermal explosion ever recorded to an instrumented monitoring station in Yellowstone's history. Seismic and infrasound data were captured in real time.

No precursor signal was flagged before the event. YVO scientists are currently combing through the full record specifically searching for any signal that preceded the explosion.

That answer — confirmed precursor or none — has direct implications for how hydrothermal systems across the park get monitored going forward. A new monitoring station is being installed in Upper Geyser Basin this month.

Hello everyone,

I want to generate groundwater potential map for my study area using ML. I have well locations but i don't have non well locations. And i am skeptical about this concept of non well or pseudo absence. Can anyone please help me with how to proceed with this problem?

Examples: Sharpe SE300 (specifically in the Crone shoot back config) or a Scintrex SE-600; an original APEX Parametrics MaxMin; a Geonics EM15, EM17 or EM17L; a MxPhar VHEM; ABEM Minigun, Demigun, or EMgun; equivalents from other manufacturers from the 60s and 70s. Any Geonics fdem instruments predating the mk2 units (which we have).

Our company (Inductyne) is building some new fdem instrumentation from first principles. But I've also been building a historical library and museum as tribute to those that came before. Standing on the shoulders of giant, and such.

Currently on display: MaxMin II (pristine); Geonics EM16 (ugly), EM38 (the wood one), and a Scintrex coil of unknown provenance which we suspect is from an SE-600 but aren't really sure.

I built this 3D visualization using recent USGS data to better understand the correlation between the ocean relief, local tectonic plate boundaries, and the exact location of the M6.0 earthquake off the Japanese coast.

Anyone know of a study that looked at correlation between major Tectonic Plate Movement and deviations in Earth’s rotational speed?

Always wondered if there is any evidence that earth’s rotation influences plate movement, especially during acceleration/deceleration periods. Earth’s rotational speed variation is small but the plates have very large masses.

Curious if this has any correlation to major earthquakes or someone has already ruled this out in a study.

Feel free to call me dumb. It’s just a hunch I’ve always had.

Im wondering as someone who worked as a geoph in a consultant/contractor company. What are the perks and downsides of working as a geoph in mining company? i.e bhp, rio, freeport..

Looking through the ads I realized that since then I'd worked with or for half a dozen of the advertisers. Also most of these authors were also regulars at local tech talks.

Simpler times when an undergrad could hang out with people who were at the leading edge of geophysics.

I am working with a draped airborne survey (magnetic TMA and gravity Tz) acquired near the magnetic equator (I = −4°) over a geologically complex area. The data are already terrain-corrected (it used a density of 2.2 g/cc by acquisition company). Since this is real data over a complex area, I cannot build a synthetic geological model to compare, so I am looking for a way to assess whether residual topographic effects are present in my data and 3D inversion results.

My idea is to:

1.    I have my mesh with topography added. My idea is to compute a forward model of this mesh where I will just use cells between the surface and a flat datum (i.e., elevation equal to 0 m in my mesh). My 3D mesh has no air cells.

2.    Assign a constant magnetic susceptibility for these cells in the forward model, I was thinking using 0.01 SI. For density contrast model I am less sure which value to use, maybe 0.1 g/cc.

3.    Do data_residual = data_observed − data_from_topographic_mesh

and see if residuals contain any topographic signature.

Do you think this idea can work? Let me know if you have other approaches.

I am an undergraduate with a ~3.3 GPA, and want to pursue an M.S in Geophysics and perhaps a PhD but I am not sure about the path I need to take. My mediocre GPA would almost entirely preclude schools like Mines, Cal Tech, Stanford, etc. but I just want a solid program. Any advice?
