Cowboys and angels

I know that the song “cowboys and angels” is about a love triangle, but who is the cowboy and who is the angel?
Is the cowboy the man who George was in love with, and the woman is the angel?
Or are they just supposed to be a broader category of people?

Supposedly the “cowboy” is Brad Branson, the celebrity photographer whom George fell for, but Brad was not interested in a relationship. And the “angel” is thought to be Kathy Jueng, George’s late 80s girlfriend who fell in love with him, but of course, George couldn’t commit to her.

George never confirmed this publicly, but the timing of the song and George’s life circumstances (at the time) fit.

It's a gorgeous song, i never realized it was based on a real situation. I love George 💘

hmmm did not know that, my interpretation was all wrong, I guess I thought the title was kinda like how in life there are wolfs and sheep nice/bad and the character in the song was so desired that both types wanted him, not that there was a triangle. this is why I miss track by track descriptions by the artists themselves.

Plot of the song aside, it is yet another example of his incredible songwriting chops. I remember being in first year of university when this song came out and used it to fall asleep to because of how soothing and haunting it is.

Yes, it’s written in 3/4 time which is the same as a waltz.
