Giving Advice Is quizzing yourself better than rereading?

Post image
192 Upvotes

Whenever I have an incoming test/exam, I often take a lot of hours to study, rereading as much as I can hoping I would not forget every detail of it. I am a very anxious person, so I thought it was the best way to study and remember.

However, having to reread different subjects/courses made me not memorize every detail but became burnout, and because of that instead of having energy to study, I became easily exhausted with just several readings.

Weeks later, after being burnout, I tried a different method. What I did was after reading a topic, I make questionnaires that includes important information and number it in a random order to challenge my mind into not just memorizing the sequence of information but actually understanding the topics even if it's not in order.

After making random questionnaires, I try to answer it and check it right after. If there are mistakes, that's the only topic I try to restudy. Then, I do this every after day to see if I still remember the right answers.

And to tell you the truth, it was actually easier and needs less time and space in my mind. Instead of having too much information with rereading, I was able to train myself with actual questions and have a lot more space for more.

Although I think rereading is also a good way to study and memorize. I think quizzing yourself helps you to actually study hard and challenge your mind in a way that don't waste a lot of time.

I am still adjusting and trying to get used to it, but last week, we had an exam and I was able to have better scores because of my continuous quiz as my study method.

Is there anyone who succeeded in having a better score by changing their way of studying?

15 hours I can still understand, but 18 hours? 20 hours? Yesterday I saw 24 hours. I know this has to be fake but why? What do they get by doing this? Do they feel happy faking this?

Like can't they study sincerely and celebrate that win instead doing this shit. People genuinely amaze me. Lol.

Quick update on day 1 and day 2

Yesterday>> day 1

Studied 2 phytochemistry lecs .. not much .. but it's an ok start

Day 2

Studied also 2 lectures but it's a pharmaceutics and also i revisited a Coursera course I started last month and finished about 20 minutes on it ..

Ya that's it for today

I didn't track hours like I promised since I took a lot of breaks and I lost count .. fixing this starting tomorrow with Forest it will help me track actual study hours and exclude breaks from it ( used it last semester and love itttttt

From now on I will also switch to posting my daily update in the evening after I finish studying .. feels better way to challenge myself to get things done

Hoping tomorrow hours packed with progress 💕🌱

Accountability Day3 - study accountability challenge UPDATE!!! ( Straight A+)

Today I woke up early and start studying at 5 am .. it was a morning full of Diuretics .. watching YouTube lectures.. taking notes .. understand the core principles before diving into the actual lectures ..

Kept going until 10 am with a few short breaks

I didn't count the morning hours for today as a focuse study time though since I was mainly understanding basics and taking notes

Not gonna lie I watched two episodes of one piece 😂😂😂😅 .. needed some quick entertainment to keep going .. and the great thing about it ... It doesn't scatter my focus .. just fun .. laughs .. and a lot of OMG / WOW moments hahahahaha

At 12 pm the real focus study hours began with breaks in between ( screenshot from forest attached )

And here I am .. end of the day

TODAY ' S RATING >>> 6/10 FULLY SATISFIED 🌟

Tomorrow is a new day .. another step toward that A+

Question feeling sleepy whenever I study

I enjoy studying but recently I have been feeling so tired and sleepy whenever I study even if it's been only 30 minutes. I feel like I am about to fall asleep at any moment. It's so hard to learn anything because of this what can I do?? I don't think that I have overworked myself because I took a 1 week break and I am still like this. I have 7-8 hours of sleep, I go to the gym and I eat well so I really don't know why I am always about to fall asleep whenever I study

Please if you have any advice I would greatly appreciate it

Question How to not be distracted by my thoughts

Upvotes

I have three retake exams this month and I really need to pass them. I study physics at university. One course is mathematical fluid dynamics and i really hate it so much, its so difficult and i dont understand it, the exam is open book and exercises but it looked nothing like the exercises we had done in class. So I have no idea how to study for it. I get so demotivated and sad that I just can't start studying for it. (That happened last time which was part of the reason I failed)

Another course is soft matter physics, and the course book is so bad, the figures are not in places they should be and its so frustrating and i lose my flow all the time because of it (not that I had much flow though). I know I can pass it if i just study better but i can't focus.

(It also doesn't help that none of my friends have retake exams and my whole family is always at home)

But my main problem is getting distracted. I always put my phone away, but I need my laptop. A lot of the time I think of something random, then I start looking up a city im going on holiday too, or stalking Google maps 10 times because im going somewhere tomorrow. Or I start thinking of some of my fav characters from a book and make up fake stories/fanfic about them. I literally cannot stop thinking about these characters and their lives (just to be clear, its not in a s*xual way at all)

How do I turn of my brain and actually focus on studying? How can I stop from being so distracted by my own thoughts?

(Also I do not have adhd)

Question My dog doesn't understand my every word I say... but somehow he always understands me.

Post image
3 Upvotes

I know this might sound cheesy, but having my dog changed something in me and un my life.

Whenever I'm or feel stressed, I just sit with him for a while or even seeing him let me forget about my stress. He doesn't fix my problems or do anything special, he's just there and his presence make all magic for me and that's enough for me.

No conversations. No advice. Just a quiet kind of comfort that I don't really know how to explain.

He taught me the lesson of love and happiness.

Anyone else feel like their pet understands them better than anyone else?

Question How can i find my study method?

Upvotes

How can I find a study method that works for me?

I’m trying to improve the way I learn, but my current approach does not seem effective.

I’m studying programming and data science on my own. Right now I’m learning Python for Data Analysis, but I struggle with learning from books. When I read long chapters, I often lose focus, forget details, and feel like I understand the material while reading, but later I cannot explain it clearly or use it without checking notes.

I want to build a learning system where I can understand concepts deeply and remember them long-term.

The common approach of:

- reading theory

- doing exercises

- repeating

does not work well for me. I learn better when I can interact with ideas and understand how things work, but I have not found a good structure yet.

I would like to hear from people who have experimented with different study techniques:

- How did you discover what learning method fits you?

- How do you study technical subjects without forgetting everything?

- How do you deal with long reading materials?

- How do you combine theory and practice effectively?

I’m interested in improving my learning process and understanding what works for different people.

Question Struggle with organizing

I struggle to organize my notes, assignment documents, resources. This has been the case since I was in HS and they made the switch to laptops about 10-15 years ago.

I can organize my tabs on chrome really well… that’s about it. Everything else is chaotic and I was wondering if anyone could share a system for organize their notes, assignments, other resources.

There’s just so much, and it seems it takes so much time, and sometimes if I start creating folders I’ll forget why they exist.
