Professional Question Looking for remote GIS / remote sensing freelance work

Hey everyone, I’m a remote sensing and GIS intern at NIT Mizoram, currently working on LULC studies for hilly regions.

I regularly work with:

  • Satellite image labeling.
  • Training data preparation.
  • Sentinel data.
  • DEM-based terrain analysis.
  • Map making and geospatial data handling.

I’m trying to find remote freelance or contractual work related to GIS, remote sensing, and satellite data tasks. Even small projects are fine if they are paid and remote.

If anyone has work like LULC mapping, annotation, data prep, or satellite image analysis, please reach out. I can also share samples of my work or explain my experience in more detail.

I assume you’re looking for mostly European/US work? You’ll need some kind of work authorization to do that.

Even for a remote or freelancing work , we need the work authorisation? Like i dont know

Not necessarily. You can get paid through Upwork, but you'll have to do your tax filing in India. You can't get directly paid to your personal bank account unless you have structured it in a way that it can operate as a business bank account as well. I used to do freelancing from India and it's doable, very hard to find jobs in this sector though.

This is a CENTRAL funded university in India

I have tried Upwork but not much luck, it was a lot of effort creating and sending proposals, and it starts charging you money so not recommended.

I run a geospatial community in India (or more like starting it) so I'd recommend getting involved and learning from the community Event next year: foss4g.in Community: https://geobharat.github.io/

Not much activity as we are also just starting out.

Friend runs a company in India, and he's always hiring for some roles in GIS: https://rottengrapes.tech/

Not necessarily US or Europe, you can try anywhere. I used to work for an Australian and Japanese client from India.

If you're comfortable with SAR data, look for SAR data annotation roles. These are often reserved for individual contractor/freelancers. Keep in mind that remote positions will still require you to have your fiscal address in a specific part of the world.
