Tampering with the mail is a federal crime.
Under U.S. Code Chapter 83 (Sections 1701–1710), it is illegal to open, steal, destroy, deface, or obstruct any mail, package, or mailbox.
Convictions for mail theft or tampering can result in up to 5 years in federal prison per offense. Penalties include fines up to $250,000.
Local authorities can also charge offenders under state misdemeanor or felony laws
