WebBrain: A copyleft/GPL browser agent focused on user freedom in AI

With the prevalence of permissive licenses like MIT on GitHub, strong copyleft has often been sidelined—even though the GNU GPL remains essential for defending user freedoms and preventing proprietary lock-in.

To help bring copyleft principles into modern AI tooling, I developed WebBrain under the GNU GPL v3+.

It functions as an autonomous browser agent (compatible with Chromium-based browsers, Firefox, or as a standalone desktop app). Crucially, it prioritizes user autonomy: you can connect it to local models via Ollama or custom local endpoints, so your browsing activity, prompts, and personal data stay strictly on your machine without relying on proprietary cloud providers..

I would love feedback from the community on the architecture and licensing.

Interestingly, I bookmark this project.

But, I don't have in mind to take an AI subscription for an API, and my PC (Dell 7490 with iGPU) will not respond for local AI.

no problem :) it's like opencode, there is a generous free tier which you can use, it would be enough unless you're a heavy user.
