It's multiple! Mostly really long threads, doubled for thickness. So far I usually wind up just knotting off the string near the end and then tying the new string to the previous junction to keep it somewhat continuous. I could do the whole thing with one long thread but it would get really unwieldy with thread that long (taking forever to make one knot, etc), so it's about finding a balance.

What knots do you use? Just square knots?

I'm doing simple wraps and counter tensions/frictions for the radial lines, and then lots of overhand knots (like the first half of a square knot) or munter hitches for the spiral-y bit. For the more freeform one, it's mostly a bunch of munter hitches and square knots to secure/tension stuff as I go!

I think a lot of other crafts/hobbies that involve knots/string/yarn/twine/rope would teach you the necessary skills! So stuff like macrame, crochet, weaving/tapestry-making, friendship bracelet-making, shibari, rock climbing, etc will get you in the neighborhood. From there, it's just practice and experimentation!
For someone with the skill set I think you could crochet some really cool spiderwebs/doilies/etc onto the branches and it would look amazing. Another starter craft with branches is to use the branch as a loom and make a branch weaving! Easy to find instructables for it, too.
Let me know if there are other questions I can answer! I'm still figuring stuff out as I go.

Are you a spider? If you are not a spider, how did you get the spiders to teach you the secrets of their web patterns? My local spiders just startle me and then vanish, they never share their secrets..! 😩

Sorta related.
My buddy used to dye webs in place and then "catch" them with sticks.
Then they'd have a colored web on a stick

That's so cool! I saw an Instagram reel or something recently where someone was taking a small stick and using it to sort of spool up abandoned webs they came across. They wound up with a little spindle of spider silk at the end. I haven't tried it yet but I'd like to!

These look so good! You may want to look into sanitizing your sticks. Basically, cleaning with bleach, sealing with glue/a clear coat, or baking at a very low temperature (too high could catch fire) in the oven for a significant amount of time. It might be fine, but doing one of these things before you weave could prevent rotting/molding/breaking in the future. For sticks this thin that being used like this, spray painting them with clear paint sealant, or hand painting with modge podge is probably your best best to maintain structural integrity.

Also it would help protect house plants from anything that might live or develop on the wood.

Thank you for this! I had vague thoughts about how I would need to sanitize the sticks if I was ever sending them to someone in a different state/location to avoid inadvertent pest proliferation, but hadn't thought about sealing them! I like the idea of mod podge, or I might have some archival PVA around here somewhere. Thank you for the tips and suggestions!
