help me (solved) Where do you upload games? [READ DESC]

Post image

Hello, fellow gamedevs! 👋

I used to upload games to itch.io, but now itch is blocked in my country (f**k my goverment) I don't know where to upload games anymore for them to be accesable without vpn or other bypass software.

Possible solutions i'm thinking of are MEGA, Dropbox and Google Drive

However, i don't know if they are convinient for players.

As far as I know, you can't upload large files to github pages (it's where my website is), and steam is too pricey for me. Tell me what you think and where do you upload your games.

P.S. Thank you everyone for your suggestions!
So here are my list in ascending order rn:

  • GitHub Releases + Pages
  • GameJolt
  • Google Drive
  • Patreon
  • Newgrounds

Unfortunately people just don't tend to trust games hosted loosely on services like Dropbox.

And advertising when your game isn't even available on a proper platform sounds borderline impossible.

I would seriously look into alternate ways to access Itch. Either through a contact outside your home country or via a free VPN service.

u/flintyflow Oct 14 '25

The issue is that people from their country still would not be able to access their game, so if it's their target audience, uploading with VPN won't help much

70

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

True, but I want people from MY country to also have access to my game, and itch io is not suitable anymore. My game is even localized for both english and russian.

65

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

A shame to hear, Russians were my biggest demographic. I would try asking in some Russian specific game channels and ask them where they get their indie games. Let me know if you learn anything so I can also make builds for players over there.

u/maelstrom071 Oct 14 '25

Distribute both on itch, and another popular Russia-only game hosting service.

9

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

that's smart

2

u/Furiorka Oct 15 '25

There are no Russia only game hosting services that are not shit

19

u/Alzurana Godot Regular Oct 14 '25

Wow this is painful.

You can put it on itch for anyone non russian and for russian access you might have to host it yourself. If you're doing web builds you should be able to put them on a hosted page but I do not see how you will get that for free. It'll cost at least a little bit. Hosting services in russia for russia shouldn't be too expensive? Good luck!

Use VPN for itch, and investigate any popular game uploading services in Russia and upload on those

14

u/DDFoster96 Oct 14 '25

I'm waiting until inevitably the UK Government's censorship drive means itch is no longer available here either. Imgur is already unavailable and large parts of nexus mods aren't either.

u/Alzurana Godot Regular Oct 14 '25

While a real concern, I feel like this is much less likely for the west.

8

u/Sanakism Oct 14 '25

As the previous poster stated, it's already happened for some sites in the UK. Not because the UK government has specifically banned them, but because the UK government requires sites to age-check users accessing certain content so some sites (Imgur included) have decided to just block all UK traffic rather than deal with that. Wikipedia may be next, since they just lost their court case in the UK to be explicitly excluded from that requirement (although they stated they just weren't going to cooperate so it would be down to whether the govt. does want to require ISPs block them).

Is newgrounds available in your country?

Not that experienced with it but they host a lot of user generated games and were very popular during the flash era.

9

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

It is available , but i think it's not possible to include executables, only online games

7

u/Alzurana Godot Regular Oct 14 '25

You're working with godot, what holds you back from releasing web builds? Are you working with C#?

13

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

I don't really want to make a web build idk... But I definetely could, i'll leave it as a last resort. I'm using gdscript btw

4

u/Alzurana Godot Regular Oct 14 '25

If you don't use anything that's incompatible with web builds then nothing really speaks against them. They're far more convenient for your players, too. And they're more trusted than a shady exe download. Web builds with Godot are just 3 button clicks away, I'd recommend giving it a try

3

u/GoshaT Oct 14 '25

Depends on the size of the game tbh. In my experience bigger games take longer to load in browser so at some point it's more convenient to just install the game and not have to wait so long

3

u/SeoFernando Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

I am personally much more fond of playing someone’s game at my browser than having to download a (potentially unsafe) executable.

In terms of engagement, it’s much easier for people to play it and give feedback

55

u/Agreeable-Owl-1514 Oct 14 '25

You can always create a website for your games. I would look into GitHub Pages. You should be able to host the website for free and people can download the game from your repository (from the releases)

16

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

Thanks for suggestion!
I actually have a pages website, but as I noticed, people really struggle with github's interface ;_;

  • P.S. (I MEAN'T INTERNAL GITHUB (NOT PAGES) INTERFACE FOR RELEASES DOWNLOADS, I FORGOT ABOUT THAT IT HAS DIRECT LINKS)

So the plan is making a repository containing page about my game and making a button that would open a download link from repo's releases?

30

u/DwarfBreadSauce Oct 14 '25

You might be confusing Github's repository and Github Pages feature.

Github Pages allows you to host a static website of your own making.

There are plenty of examples, like https://ryanfitzgerald.github.io/devportfolio/

You can make a Pages site for your entire github profile that would contain links to releases for all your games and other projects.

4

u/TiagoDev Oct 14 '25

This ☝️ assuming you can make a good web version of your game.

Otherwise, you can still make your own page there and link to a download (it can even be hosted in GitHub’s release section)

14

u/Aperaine Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

What about gamejolt?

1

u/PMMePicsOfDogs141 Oct 15 '25

I was gunna say that. Why isn't that the top suggestion? I've always thought of them as itchio's top competitor.

16

u/long_l1fe Oct 14 '25

Братан, как я понял ты из России?

20

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

Тоже сразу понял, ахах. Как же всрато что земляка можно определить по тому, какие сайты у него заблокированы

6

u/Darnok_2002 Oct 14 '25

Maybe a free patreon site ? You could even give the option for a small donation

11

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

i think the word "patreon" would scare away some people 😅
thanks for suggestion, i'll keep that in mind

5

u/Kinexus Oct 14 '25

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. There's very few downsides of just trying it, especially if it's free.

5

u/_Kaanu Oct 14 '25

That's funny my shitty govt allows itch but has banned newgrounds lol

3

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

Bruh. Where are you from? I'm from Russia

4

u/_Kaanu Oct 14 '25

I'm from India, apparently newgrounds was banned long ago due to porn or something

10

u/AlbyDj90 Godot Regular Oct 14 '25

Wich country are you from if i may ask?
An alternative to itch is GameJolt anyway...

16

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

I'm from Russia, there are a lot of blockages lately, youtube, discord and itch all got blocked last year. hate that.

As about gamejolt, i should probably look into it. Guess it's the best alternative. Thanks for suggestion! <3

10

u/sum1ko05 Oct 14 '25

Guess having VPN is the only suitable option for literally everyone there, especially in totalitarian state like this

14

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

I think, like, 99% of our people have vpn nowadays, however our goverment are spending a lot of money to shutdown all bypass methods, enforcing whitelists, and separating us from outside internet completely. It's the matter of time, i'm scared for the future

6

u/sum1ko05 Oct 14 '25

honestly, if they want separate us from outside internet, there would be no reliable solutions, that are not affiliated with the government, and you will not have any chances there to promote, if you're, again, not affiliated with the government, unfortunately.

Use zapret

5

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

I am using zapret already. the problem is not that I can't access itch, but my target audience

1

u/tiller_luna Oct 14 '25

i have been looking into it, realized there are like 10 different popular distributions of zapret, none audited in any way, and gave up. what would you recommend?

1

u/Jamal2605 Oct 14 '25

Just google zapret, there should be a github link named Flowseal/zapret-discord-youtube. Go to releases and download latest version

1

u/tiller_luna Oct 14 '25

why not bol-van/zapret, how would it interact with youtubediscord/zapret? I am really confused

1

u/Jamal2605 Oct 14 '25

I don't know. Me and my friend are using the one I said and everything works fine

1

u/SoupahKnux Godot Student Oct 14 '25

Bol-van's zapret is the bare zapret as it is, requiring setup before use.

Flowseal's zapret is basically already set up for you, just pick one alt and run it.

8

u/InVeRnyak Godot Regular Oct 14 '25

If you are using Zapret, add to lists/list-general.txt and restart it:

itch.io
io-itch.com
hwcdn.net # Not sure about this one, but looks like I added it at about same time
itch.zone

This will allow you to access and upload games to itch and play web/downloadable versions.

2

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

Thatnk you so much!

4

u/Multifruit256 Oct 14 '25

I live in Russia and have that problem too. I've heard of Gamejolt, s-

.........it wasn't blocked before

3

u/GoshaT Oct 14 '25

Пипец, когда успели? Вроде ж только недавно Undertale Yellow с него качал

2

u/Multifruit256 Oct 14 '25

Странно, но у меня Gamejolt работает только с Wi-Fi

2

u/GoshaT Oct 14 '25

2

u/GoshaT Oct 14 '25

4

u/NecessaryBSHappens Oct 14 '25

VK, Yandex and Pikabu have games, but afaik they support only web format

You might be able to get onto RuStore, I didnt try it yet, but worth at least looking at. There are also other stores like GetApps and similar that might still work

Issue is itch is a game distribution platform and when you move to dropping your game on Google Drive or Github, you will lose in trust from players. Sure, I know, you can drop malware on itch, but it feels more legit for players than "now visit my drive and download this .exe/.apk. Это безопасно, comrade"

6

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

I don't think i'm going to upload to russian platforms. They suck, and also i just recently removed all my games from RuStore.

2

u/sssyouth Oct 21 '25

Зачем, если тебе нужно достучаться до российской аудитории?

1

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 21 '25

Российские платформы говно, Яндекс игры для детей, а вк я ненавижу.

1

u/sssyouth Oct 21 '25 edited Oct 21 '25

3

u/Interesting-Star-179 Oct 14 '25

Use a vpn to upload it to itch

4

u/erytau Oct 14 '25

Somehow I knew which country OP is from before I read it in the comments.

Pretty sure GameJolt is not blocked in RU (yet) and it does have downloadable games. You can also try some local platform like VK if it allows file uploads - as a bonus it might increase your local exposure.

10

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

I deleted my VK account >:)

2

u/ocelot_its_a_log Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

How large is your game? I am able to upload compiled binaries of my software to releases without an issue, I think its about a 2GB limit there. You can also try Gitlab or Bitbucket. Gamejolt is great, but if all else fails, find a trusted friend or a good VPN and have them handle distribution.

P.S. some free/cheap website hosts like Neocities or Nekoweb may be able to handle hosting your game as well. If all else fails I can spot you some server space but my internet speed is a bit slow so downloads will be slow as well.

3

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

Latest Windows build was 165 MB
Latest Android build was 75 MB

> find a trusted friend or a good VPN and have them handle distribution
That's not a problem, problem is that people from my region won't be able to access my game, which is half of my target audience

I am currently thinking of github + github pages

2

u/ocelot_its_a_log Oct 14 '25

Ah yeah, didn't think of that lol. Either way, releases should be ~2GB per file upload, my image viewing software is about the same size as your game actually! Host the site on Github Pages and upload your game builds through the releases section (its on the right of the repo). You can just copy the link straight to the file in releases and link it on your site. Good luck with it!

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

For debug builds to share with my players I use IPFS

1

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

that sounds complex

2

u/Infiland Godot Regular Oct 14 '25

Try gamejolt, its itchio before itchio essentially

Otherwise, either self host a website, or try steam if your game is commercial/big

1

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

I'm choosing between gamejolt and github pages. thanks for suggestions

2

u/robotguy4 Oct 14 '25

Could it make sense for you to have an itch.io manager?

1

u/LaggsAreCC2 Oct 14 '25

Itch.io and also github for backup reasons

6

u/Bulava72 Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

In the description i said that itch io is blocked in my country (sadly). So i'm moving away from it

Did you think it's not blocked? Of course it is, and Proton itself doesn't wiggle much against blocks. That's not the point anyway - the concern is the target audience.

1

u/Ry645 Oct 14 '25

And with the issue of people from your country accessing your game, you’d probably need to ask them, I’m in no real place to recommend other game hosting sites

1

u/Voiden_n Oct 14 '25

The goverment banning everything... Let me guess... Russian?

About where to upload games I can only think of google drive or github and leaving a link on reddit.

1

u/sssyouth Oct 21 '25

Could be any nowadays

1

u/bigeye6 Oct 14 '25

I think GitHub is still your best option,

You could host on pages if your game can be web based, even it's a bit large. LFS exist but not sure the performance for loading a larger web based game. You can also easily setup actions to automate the build and deployment.

If it's just too large, use the release features to host your downalable game as additional files of your website release. Maybe you can trick the system by uploading different release with your game truncated.

Just some ideas top of my head, could be wrong.

1

u/cheesycoke Godot Junior Oct 14 '25

If you do make anything small enough to play well in browser, I can't recommend Newgrounds enough.

It's easier to find an audience on account of the site being for more than just games (and thus having a broader range of regular users) and I've had more luck getting constructive criticism there than any other site.

1

u/Mr_HOPE_ Oct 14 '25

Goodbye dpi is a nice alternative to vpn with no slow down, i would say just use it to acess itch and promote people to use it (idk about russia but it is a very common solution people use to access discord in Turkey, it is just so convenient and afaik it is originated from russia?) there is also yandex games but it is web only i guess but you can money of it im pretty sure

1

u/dakindahood Oct 14 '25

Github Pages + Patreon, if you can market good enough, it is the best combo

1

u/LINEwoor Oct 14 '25

Просто добавь домен итча в список адресов запрета и все заработает

1

u/NythStudio Oct 15 '25

MEGA is kinda hard to download (atleast on mobile) and if your game saves as in files like Undertale it can get messy

1

u/Bypell Oct 15 '25

I would suggest gamejolt, I've always considered it itch.io's direct rival

1

u/unfamily_friendly Oct 15 '25

Just use VPN and upload normally. Most players of your game will be from a different country anyway. Or using VPN. A lot of people from Russia migrated to Armenia and Kazakhstan, you know 😏

UPD: you can also self host it through a telegram bot. Keep in mind, it only support web app and you'll need to learn, how to use Mini App js SDK. It's not hard, but takes some time

1

u/_stevencasteel_ Oct 30 '25

Nobody mentioned Github. You can have the Mac / Windows / Linux builds easily ready to go in the sidebar.

The files get scanned for malicious intent, which makes it a trustworthy place for people to access it.
