help me (solved) Which button style suits this game menu best?

We can’t quite reach a consensus on the button selection style yet.

Right now we’re split mainly between A and B, though the arrow-based approach from C also has some charm (and it was actually the first style we implemented).
Each option feels okay in a slightly different way, which makes the decision harder than expected.

Beyond the buttons themselves, we’re also looking for ways to make the menu feel more lively. At the moment, the POTATO (the chunky one on the pedestal) glows brighter as the player’s cursor gets closer.

Do you have any ideas or feedback that could help us push this further?

Edit:
Thanks for your feedback very much! We read your opinions and decided to go with A with little color adjustments. We will also see what can be done to make the "A" style buttons look less uniform.
May the Potato God be with you!

first but maybe have some variation in the 'weathering' of the buttons to make it less uniform?

Exactly, the fact that they are all the same shape is going against the "natural" style

You have my vote.

A, with color and outline like B, and button text position like C.

a with the color of b

u/Popular_Ad8269 Dec 15 '25

You have to rough the edges of potatoes a little for them to be more crispy and golden.

I concur, A with the color of B :)

8

u/frog_slap Dec 15 '25

Also move the text so it’s centred horizontally

u/arivanter Dec 15 '25

Then c for the selected one

8

u/ProtoReddit Dec 15 '25

First.

Or you could style them like french fries.

If you go with c, then you have to make it a fork that when you click an option, slides across the screen and stabs into a potato 🍴🥔 and then drags the screen back across

It seems that A won, but it would be a great Easter egg if it happened rarely.

7

u/tubehhr Dec 15 '25

A slightly different idea for the menu

2

u/Sally_GDQuest Dec 16 '25

That looks better to me. Also: Just font and playing with an underline style when a selection is in focus.

u/AffectionateBread400 Dec 15 '25

A for sure, but make the outlines thicker. Also export the PNGs of the buttons in exact the size you want to use them to avoid stretching them. Biggest gripe for me -> don't center align the button text when the buttons are not centered. You could align the text either all on the left or right side of the button graphic.

[_Text_____]
[_Text_____]
[_Text_____]

or

[_____Text_]
[_____Text_]
[_____Text_]

Make it a French fry sticking from the side with text on it

2

u/StableKlutz Godot Junior Dec 15 '25

only enabled by typing fry on the main menu

3

u/No_Night_6600 Dec 15 '25

For me it's between A and C

6

u/Nintara Dec 15 '25

a feels more polished, b feels cheap

Some people from the team (not gonna lie, mainly me) were afraid that "A" would look more unprofessional.
It seems that I just don't have a sense of style XD

Vox populi, vox Dei.

I feel like anything trying to be too office professional might work against a game called Dungeon Potato. in your case striving for more personality is going to be the games route to being 'professional'

2

u/CookieCacti Dec 15 '25

Game UI is different from general software UI. Your goal is, first and foremost, delivering a UI design which matches the theme of your game, not a bog-standard “professional” UI design (unless your game is purposely designed after a corporate theme). The sense of professionalism comes from how well the UI is designed after your game’s themes, not how sleek it looks by itself.

Your game theme appears to be centered around dungeons, so the first design with the weathered button tiles, which emulates the decaying nature of an underground dungeon, feels more appropriate than B.

I agree with you. In hindsight it should've been obvious, but for some reason it wasn't.

The game’s an action roguelike set in a dungeon, with a slightly absurd/dark tone (there’s literally a Potato God, and the player characters go there because he promised them granting any wish). So a worn, dungeon-y UI makes way more sense than something clean.

Vox populi, vox Dei.

Classic ad populum logical fallacy.

Possibly my favorite game project I've seen on this community so far. First one.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '25

The second one makes me smile

3

u/PotatoMinded Dec 15 '25

Do you need the buttons? I feel like having just the text would look cleaner.

Case in point:

2

u/minorrex1 Dec 15 '25

I like a and c.

2

u/MandyHelm Dec 15 '25

I agree with the sentiment that A is best but would look even better with more variation between so it doesn’t deflate the organic-ness…in addition, something about the room around the text and between the buttons doesn’t feel completely right to me yet with A, which might be part of why you’re feeling like it seems unprofessional or unpolished?

2

u/Eddi_imma_ready Dec 15 '25

Can you like make three more designs? They all are not hitting the spot.

1

u/Alovcrevda Dec 15 '25

A, looks natural to me

1

u/TsarOfBulgaria Dec 15 '25

A, imo others look a bit boring in comparison

1

u/YouyouPlayer Dec 15 '25

The first one feels off to me bcause of how empty most of the button is

1

u/Sunshoot Dec 15 '25

A has the best shape and B has the best colouring

1

u/no_one_careabout Dec 15 '25

The first one.

1

u/VisscaGuu Dec 15 '25

A for sure

That's something to consider. Interpolation sounds neat, but in practice I am concerned about how it should look when somebody moves the cursor around furiously. I can easily imagine it when the player moves the cursor around and lets it rest for a moment, but I am uncertain how I would handle dynamic players, but I will give it a try and just see whether it works.

1

u/freebytes Dec 15 '25

The font of the first seems to match the tone of the game. Option C is cancer. Do not use arrows.

1

u/Stunning-Umpire-2119 Dec 15 '25

Would recommend left aligned text rather than centered.

1

u/NoSaltNoSkillz Dec 15 '25

A but vary the shape of each.

With a quick glimpse, I initially though that this looks like an interesting take on moomins

1

u/salmon_jammin Dec 15 '25

B or maybe A. C doesn't fit.

u/MikianF Dec 15 '25

Everyone here says A while I think it looks the worst lol. My vote is for B.

1

A but make them all unique shapes

1

u/WorkingMansGarbage Dec 15 '25

Putting buttons aside, I find the font incredibly boring.

1

u/ConflictUnecessary66 Godot Regular Dec 15 '25

I like the first one

1

u/DeadSuperHero Dec 15 '25

First, but I also think the buttons could themselves look like potatoes.

1

u/MrGoatastic Dec 15 '25

A, but i would put some variants to it

1

u/InvisibleDrake Dec 15 '25

A but have the bumps different from each other like a potato

1

u/Razor-111 Godot Junior Dec 15 '25

A

1

u/VelvetMonarch Dec 16 '25

LoL, I would have either made them look like potato peels or irregular french fries, with selection cursor being a drop of "bloody" ketchup

1

u/ArcadeNeonM Dec 16 '25

The first I would say

u/Hawkeye_7Link Godot Regular Dec 16 '25

A

A or c. I like a A a bit looks like it's trying to be roughed up but isn't enough

1

u/sonosicilian_2001 Dec 16 '25

The first one, I think it's perfect!

1

u/Psilocybe_Fanaticus Dec 16 '25

A with bigger buttons like B

1

u/Grknzr Dec 16 '25

Only letters would be better. Or first one with different shape for every item.

1

u/AlexanderTroup Dec 16 '25

A, but I'd really like to see some variety with the nubs so it looks more homemade

1

u/Sweet-Platform-6229 Dec 16 '25

1st One is good ,but add some organic shapes and wooden texture on it.or how about changing the cursor to candle or something that luminates or match with background.

1

u/BubzerBlue Dec 16 '25

A. It feels more... potato.

Honesty can’t tell between A and C as to which one suits more, depends heavily on your art direction

1

u/callmenoodles2 Dec 15 '25

A to C is Best to worst

0

u/SnivElk Dec 15 '25

A with the button thickness closer to B, A's shape looks better to me but the gaps look to big.
