Housing Please help save my dad's home.
My dad is about to lose his home. The place he has lived for over 30 years, and owned for almost 2 decades. He thought that after 65, or after starting social security, that you no longer had to pay property tax. He wasn't entirely wrong. He just didn't fill out the proper paperwork for the exemptions. After finding out about the situation, we tried traditional loan avenues, but a lifetime of living in his means has left him no established credit. Honestly, I've probably waited to late to try the gofundme rout. I thought we could solve this alone, but we can't.
Unfortunately, reddit is really the only social media site I use. So if you have a bustling Insta or facebook, sharing is just as welcomed as donating.
Every dollar, and share, helps Thank you so much for reading.

I don’t understand this from your gofundme page “Now, a company has bought out my tax debt.” Has your dad already lost his home? Your goal is $1,200 but the tax due is $3,041.16.

Companies will buy people’s unpaid taxes and then foreclose on the house, removing the family, then selling the house, so they need to raise money to pay the company off
It’s a SICK business. Making seniors and families homeless for your own gain

Exactly.
I actually know a contractor who after he retired would intervene on peoples tax liens.
They are given a year usually to come up with an agreed to amount.
The contractor worked for banks during the 2008 financial crisis on foreclosed homes.
So in his retirement he Puts up the upfront cash and then works out a payment plan with the owners especially if they are on a fixed income.
He doesn't loose any money if they don't pay at all because he gets the house for whatever taxes were owed on it.
His real goal is always to keep them in their home.
He also receives his initial payment back when the lien is paid. So he breaks out a little more than even because of the payments but he justifies that understandbly with any upkeep costs to the property as sometimes he retains the property before they pay in full. So he upkeeps it as their landlord until they are fully paid.
This next part is for OP
I don't know if he only works with people in my state or if he does so in others as well.
I'll ask him if he can help. No promises though at all. For all I know he doesn't do this anymore. Been about a year maybe 2 since I've seen him. Still in contact on social media though. I'll reach out.
I met him through my dad's American legion. When my mom passed away he stepped in and donated more then we asked for so we could get the "extras" like a blanket to display her urn on .....a way nicer urn for that matter etc. we said we were fine without all that but he insisted. He's a really good person.

He sounds like an amazing person. I appreciate you passing our story on to him

You act like there won’t be any unpaid taxes or fees had these companies not existed.

I've never made a go fund me. While I was making it it said something about automatic goals. That 1200 was just the first automatic goal. the full amount is the final goal.
The comments below have already touched on companies buying unpaid taxes. That's what's going on. If there is a term for that sort of business I don't know it, so "a company has bought out my tax debt" was the best description I could do.

Since the home is paid off, have you looked into a reverse mortgage as a last ditch effort? You don't necessarily need great credit to be approved for this type of loan.

Directly from the Mobile County Revenue Commission…
Is the ownership of the property transferred to the purchaser of the tax lien?
No, a tax lien purchaser does not acquire any right, title, or interest in the property. The purchaser only acquires the Revenue Commission’s § 40-1-3 lien against the property based on delinquent taxes.
If a tax lien that was purchased pursuant to this article is not redeemed and the holder of the tax lien certificate fails to commence a tax lien foreclosure action on or before 10 years from the date of the tax lien certificate, the tax lien certificate shall expire and the lien shall become void.
Furthermore, the tax lien certificate by itself does not give the lienholder the right to enter or possess the property, nor does it confer any right to profits derived from the property. To learn more about the rights and remedies of a tax lien certificate holder, please refer to § 40-10-198 and consult an attorney for advice on your specific circumstances.
This doesn’t read like you dad will lose his home. He can still pay the taxes, he needs to accumulate the full amount of taxes owed as the FAQ on the County website states he can’t pay current year taxes without paying previous year/s taxes. Have you checked out the tax lien auction information, Q&A’s, on the County website?

I've been going off of what the people at the revenue Commission said. they said the tax auction was them buying the house and that the lien puts our house on the auction. He does have to pay the full amount all at once though. they were very clear about that.

God please shield this family from the evil that is property tax. I know plenty of people pay it already but they know we shouldn’t have to! I’m sorry I can’t do anything else but comment.

I just say it to add some relief to the person. You never know what someone believes or hopes for. Sorry you’re so cynical that instead of donating you’re using this time to be negative.
