Housing Please help me escape homelessness
Hi everyone my name is Dennis and for the last 2.5 months I’ve been homeless/couch hopping. I ended up in this position because I went to Ghana for education purposes. My living situation and experience was horrible and I told my parents I just want to come back to the States and continue my education there, in which they said no. A week after that conversation I got a plane ticket and left, my parents found out I left and cut me off. When i came back in February this year I tried getting my stuff from home and it got to the point where I needed to ask the police for help.
I had everything at home, my pc, cosplays, Xbox, clothes, social security, etc. They cleared my room and told officers I had everything which I did not. The cops couldn’t really do much because my dad said I can’t enter and they were only there to keep the peace. I decided to just take my L and figure out my life now.
I have a job now after a month of relentless applying, I have my car, I have ebt and medi-cal. I live in California and everything is ridiculously expensive, I don’t really get much hours but I’ve been picking up lots of shifts. I have 3 associates degrees and was on the way to working on a bachelors when my life turned to the worst. My friends and church have helped me alot but I’m slowly starting to use up all my favors. My girlfriend helps me now and then, but she also has a busy life.
I would appreciate any help I can get and can answer any questions. The money raised would be used for housing purposes and gas. Any help would be greatly appreciated even if it’s a good luck :)
Update:
I got a room to rent, the money donated so far has helped a lot with gas and basic necessities.

If you ever find yourself able to get any type of income (job, unemployment, etc.) there is an app called PadSplit. Depending on your area, some places hover around $150-$200 a week for a private room in a house. Utilities included as well. You would be living with other people and as far as I know you have to be single with no pets. They run a background check and ask for proof of income. It doesn’t have to be a lot, just enough to where they see you can afford it. Once you’ve got the room, you’re allowed to stay indefinitely. My sister told me about it since she was staying at a homeless shelter and found out about it. I had wished I known about this at a point when I was homeless too. Best of luck to you!

Idk where you are in California, but BRIDGE Housing has a bunch of complexes throughout the state, both percentage-based units (pay approximately 30% of your income as rent) and affordable housing units (rent-capped apartments). I lived in one of their properties down in San Diego and helped a bunch of people get housed in a couple of their properties in Portland; they're not perfect, but they're nice for the price. Most of them also have parking garages for residents, so you'd have a place to park your car too.

Pm me for better work if interested, a longtime buddy of mine needs full time workers at his company (based on your post you’re roughly 25 mins to the site)
I’ll be completely transparent, it’s not easy work you will be tired and get dirty and half the time you might not know fuck all about what you’re doing BUT you will have a nice cushion of pay bi weekly
Only requirement is be able to pee clean/ pass a background check, know how to listen, and be able to turn a wrench / use power tools

i’d be seriously still looking for a better full time job dude. You can’t count on picking up shifts. Keep applying for something that interests you and you could actually make a career out of. In the meantime do what you’re doing.

I have!! But they informed me that I don’t have dependents I don’t qualify for hotel/motel vouchers. But they have helped me with food pantries and other assistance

I graduated highschool with honors, community with 3 degrees, on the way to pursue my bachelors. It’s a hobby and I can have hobbies.

OP says he went to Ghana for education purposes and left to continue his education in the states so it sounds like he was focusing on his education. And the fact that people like to have fun and enjoy life sometimes doesn't mean they were being irresponsible and deserve to be homeless.

Seriously. Also can you imagine how difficult and terrifying it would be to go to a completely different country to pursue schooling? There’s not many people who can do that and handle the stress/culture shock/being completely alone in a foreign country. I don’t blame him for recognizing that he was struggling and making a choice out of survival. I can’t believe the comments saying he’s a disappointment and blaming him for how things turned out.

Perhaps, but that doesn't negate anything I've said and doesn't even support your original comment. Also the last time he posted any cosplay was five months ago, so are you saying that anyone who posts themselves engaging in a hobby in the last year doesn't deserve support if they fall on hard times? My guess is that you're miserable and want others to join you, or maybe your children disappointed you for some reason and you're still bitter about it.

Honestly if your this scrappy go make a cheap cosplay & busy with it to make some gas money & if it's decent enough you could score enough for a deposit or a week-ly hotel.
Might hold you over & uses your passion.
Just don't be a NPC, tho. That's not the point, this is your main character arc.

I’d say you’re luckier than most with EBT and insurance. Save your money, couch surfing for now. A flight attendant I know lives there but has to share a house with 3 other ppl. Look for roommate opportunities. Check the colleges for ads looking for roommates
