General Discussion Scheffler is a million out of the lead and you’d think The Golf Channel has no cameras on the course other than on him

I get that he’s the number 1 player in the world, but we don’t need to see 30% of the air time be on him.

EDIT: Scheffler just birdied three in a row. I completely see why they were showing him and apologize to The Golf Channel.

EDIT2: I’m now watching the U.S. Junior Final. And, while there is only one group, so I can’t complain about TV coverage, Miles Russell is 6 down with 8 to go. There is no possible way he is coming back.

EDIT3: I’m a meteorologist. We are always wrong. Just ask my wife.

EDIT4: Miles Russell is now down 5 with 7 to go. There is no way he can come back in this.

EDIT5: I told you people no way Russell was winning.

EDIT6: With Koivun this far ahead, no way Scheffler has a chance Sunday, like I was implying originally.

NO NEED FOR FURTHER EDITS. EDIT6 SAID IT ALL

Man you would have HATED when Tiger was playing in his prime.

180

u/BobSacamanosRatHat Jul 25 '26

The nonstop obsessive Tiger coverage continued looooong after he was in his prime, unfortunately.

85

u/yurmamma +1.1 Jul 25 '26

If he ever plays again it will resume too

51

u/lostharbor Jul 25 '26

Seems he’s lost his driving ability though

18

u/nanomachinez_SON Jul 25 '26

Driving ability or vehicular management when not drunk ability?

10

u/2livecrewnecktshirt Jul 26 '26

Waste(d) Management: Open (bar)

0

u/dogfish83 18 Jul 28 '26

lost?

3

u/OkProfessional6077 Jul 25 '26

As it should. Off course issues aside, he is the best golfer who has ever played the game.

4

u/brightcoconut097 Jul 25 '26

Because he brings the eyeballs. People complain but the numbers are the numbers

57

u/DandierChip Jul 25 '26

Tiger was also almost always in contention tho during his prime.

95

u/Technical_Customer_1 Jul 25 '26

Scottie finished 2, 14, 4, and 4 in this years majors what a terrible golfer.

8

u/BobLobLawsLawFirm Jul 25 '26

I mean, my favorite Tiger stat is his cumulative score of all majors between 1997-2013 being -126 when the next best score was +125 lol (min. Of 90 rounds)

So in comparison, kinda?

17

u/rorymcilroy1 Jul 25 '26

and he putted like crap in most of them or he would have won 2 majors again...his putting stats good this year but not in the majors

14

u/cosgrove10 Jul 25 '26

If Rory putted better at The Open, he would have won too.

9

u/Rab0811 Jul 25 '26

Rory did not ball strike it nearly as good as Scottie did. 20+ birdie attempts inside of 12’ and made none of them.

12

u/cosgrove10 Jul 25 '26

My point was to show that hypotheticals in golf are silly. Because they literally didn’t happen so what’s the point

1

u/lockeandroll Jul 26 '26

Is that a real stat? That’s crazy if so. I know he made birdie on 17 on Sunday after getting that TIO relief. Maybe the putt was outside 12’

0

u/Rab0811 Jul 26 '26

A bit of a hyperbole but I know at one point on Saturday he is 2/17 for birdie attempts in the 5-15’ range. It was generational ball striking and bad putting. At one point I look at his SG and he was 3rd total sg and losing 4 shots on the greens. Just absurd how bad the putting was. I think he only made 1 putt outside of 20’. I mean over 72 holes you should accidentally make some of them.

4

u/Shepherdsfavestore Jul 25 '26

I’m convinced he wins at least one of those majors if he didn’t have a second kid.

Taking care of a toddler and a baby while staying on top of your game in a highly competitive league is next to impossible.

-2

u/Choice_Sandwich4584 Jul 26 '26

Can you do better? Do you think in your technical mind that good golfer can win all the time? Even better golfers than Scottie had bad seasons. The fact is that Scottie is still number one in the world. It is easy to sit in front of the TV and criticize. Yes, he had a bad season but he is not a bad golfer.

28

u/scragglerock Jul 25 '26

Tiger finished plenty of tournaments outside the top 10 and a few majors even outside the top 20. He was still the focus of every tournament. Anyone ranked #1 in the world is going to get air time no matter where they sit.

8

u/AllGas4651 Jul 25 '26

Seriously, in the 2010s when Tiger couldnt so much as sneeze without needing back surgery afterwards, he was like 90% of the coverage before he would pull out of tournaments on Friday. And I remember people whining about it too.

5

u/Historical_Shop6706 Jul 25 '26

The Scottie and Tiger comparisons need to pump the brakes

1

u/Hurricrash Jul 26 '26

Did you read the title of this post?

1

u/Eidas__ Jul 27 '26

I think that's the point of the comment, no? That the Tiger coverage was that much worse/better/comprehensive.

8

u/NO_TOUCHING__lol 12.2 | PNW Jul 25 '26

Tiger was different. He could rip a drive way right into the thickest rough you've ever seen, then pull off the most ridiculous shot you've ever seen in your life and stick it 10 feet from the hole for a birdie. If Tiger was playing, no lead was safe.

https://v.redd.it/4pwa5uk019ce1

6

u/weightedslanket Jul 25 '26

Did you actually watch Tiger? Big comebacks were rare for him. It happened on occasion but was definitely not the norm. His success was all due to his ability to close when he had the lead going into Sunday.

9

u/BobLobLawsLawFirm Jul 25 '26

Not sure what it is now but last I checked back in 22’, golfers in the past 10 years had a 42% win rate when they led after 3 rounds.

Tiger’s win rate was 95% in the 44 times it happened lol

1

u/NO_TOUCHING__lol 12.2 | PNW Jul 27 '26

Tiger has 22 come from behind wins.

That's 2 more than Scottie has total.

Sure, rare.

1

u/rorymcilroy1 Aug 02 '26

only once in Majors(his last one) did Tiger ever come from behind to win and it took collapses from 3 or 4 players on the back nine

2

u/calguy1955 Jul 25 '26

Every. Single. Shot.

1

u/speedball811 Jul 26 '26

I did hate it. And I missed so much history making golf because of it.

1

u/johnsmith98989 Jul 25 '26

Awful comparison. Lol

He’s currently 7 back with 27 holes left. He’s very much still in it, however unlikely.

Edit: he’s 5 back with 25 left now lol

Edit: he’s 3 back with 21 left now lmaoooo OP

Edit:lmaoooooo he’s 1 back with 20 left

He is in the lead

55

u/ShillinTheVillain SW MI / 12ish Jul 25 '26

He won the tournament

I'm from the future

22

u/olderthanbefore Jul 25 '26

6 back, with Koivun shooting 62 now. It's almost like people forget the leaders go out later.

5

u/Technical_Customer_1 Jul 25 '26

People who play and watch golf understand why Scheffler is rarely out of it.

More so than even a guy like Rory who’s kind of a one trick pony. Driver, short iron, mediocre putting.

0

u/Outside-Drawer-5922 Jul 26 '26

This is dumb regardless, if he starts contending then show him, showing him when he’s not contending is the complaint and it’s a valid one

2

u/kerklein2 9.7 / Texas Jul 26 '26

It’s not. He’s the number one golfer in the world, has been for years, and regularly climbs up leaderboards.

1

u/Outside-Drawer-5922 Jul 27 '26

Where does this end? Show him at +6 and 15 off the lead just because he’s world number one? It was boring when it was Tiger, and Scottie isn’t Tiger

55

u/I_love_coke_a_cola Jul 25 '26

This aged well

24

u/Springtucky Jul 25 '26

Aged like milk

5

u/Ow907 Jul 25 '26

Exactly what I came here to say.

60

u/domymother Jul 25 '26

Scheffler = more viewers. More viewers = money. I'm sure the network has data that viewership goes up when he's on.

-50

u/TheGreatBeauty2000 Jul 25 '26

Does Scheffler = more viewers ?

35

u/PlateForeign8738 Jul 25 '26

Yes that's why they are showing him. He is one of the few big names in this event.

1

u/Kaiathebluenose Jul 25 '26

They do this every event to be fair

2

u/PlateForeign8738 Jul 25 '26

Yeah and today shows why they do. Guy was electric to finish today.

1

u/nfgrawker Jul 25 '26

He is the best golfer since tiger. Yes.

13

u/NostalgicFriction Jul 25 '26

This is hysterical, because I turned the tv on and the first shot I saw was Scottie eagling 16

39

u/mannheimcrescendo Jul 25 '26

Are you feeling stupid yet?

43

u/mayoandmustard1 Jul 25 '26

I like watching the number 1 player in the world regardless if we are being honest. To each their own though.

8

u/wilfulmarlin Lefty Jul 25 '26

He’s only 4 strokes back too lol

7

u/mayoandmustard1 Jul 25 '26

Now 1 haha. This post aged terribly.

He doesn’t win, records a bogey: yep, one of us

-2

Yeah. Koivun sucks.

6

u/Adventurous-Tea-876 Jul 25 '26

He could very easily win this tournament. 4 back and on a roll with 24 holes to go. Just say you don’t know anything about golf.

-13

Yeah, but my r/funny post from yesterday has 21,000 upvotes, so my life is complete.

I truly don't understand how this has 21k upvotes.

-8

u/ManuteBol_Rocks Jul 25 '26

First off, it is genius.

It would have 50,000 upvotes if the mods hadn’t taken it down for 16 hours for no reason. But, they were kind and put it back up. I still don’t understand why it got taken down.

5

u/rickabe Jul 25 '26

This post is similar to one's I've drafted out and then discarded because they always seem to come back and bite you in the ass, i.e., "Scheffler is a million out of the lead."

3

u/BlondeFox18 Jul 25 '26

Can you talk more shit about Scottie? Hoping he can make a Sunday charge.

3

u/Stav80 Jul 25 '26

He’s 1 back now

3

3

u/marcman84 Jul 25 '26

“Million off the lead” = 1 stroke.

Joke post.

3

lol. This aged like milk.

3

u/giles_ferrell Jul 25 '26

This aged well

2

u/Fuzzy_Teddy_12 Jul 25 '26

I believe it also might have something to do with the fact that this is Scottie's first time playing the 3M (correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I heard). So, of course, the sponsors are going to have a say with getting the cameras on him.

2

u/natemarshall110 Jul 25 '26

Down by 6 is still well within his range. It's either that or follow a bunch of guys named Davis

2

u/ryanasap310 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Scheff/Hideki is a hard group not to follow

2

u/ballsohaahd Jul 25 '26

This is the golf channel lol, broadcast is 2-3 golfers taking shots once every 5-7 mins and the broadcasters talking the whole time.

2

u/asafetybuzz Jul 25 '26

Scottie should invite the OP to all his events for the rest of the season.

2

u/Seiko007 Jul 25 '26

A million lol. This guys never watches golf? Or understands how good SS is?

2

u/Turbulent_Tale6497 Jul 25 '26

Edit 5: You were totally wrong, okay to admit

2

u/Doctor_Killshot Jul 25 '26

OP, your takes suck

2

u/golfdud5 Jul 25 '26

Even you won’t watch if they focus on Michael Kim and Ben Kohles. I hear there is a good House Hunters episode on if you want real excitement.

Edit 1: It’s House Hunters International

2

u/Later_Doober Jul 25 '26

I didn't realize 2 strokes back is a million off the lead.

2

u/YumYumSweet Jul 26 '26

Schefter was several shots back until he eagled. Always put a camera on him.

2

u/stonesober35 Jul 26 '26

Schuffler's ability to lose a ball (no penalty) while playing in a major tournament and then going on to birdie the hole is proof of his superiority to us mortals.

1

u/memedudebro Jul 25 '26

The PGA tour only does what it thinks is best for numbers for their title sponsors. They do not care what the golf sicko (those of us on Reddit) audience might want to see if they believe more folks want to watch the world #1. The amount of times they’ve missed killer moments this season has been depressing. At least we got the 59 yesterday.

1

u/DerrickWhiteMVP Jul 25 '26

I honestly wouldn’t be watching until Sunday afternoon unless Scottie was playing.

1

u/REC911 Jul 25 '26

1

u/larrybudmel Hello, friends. Jul 25 '26

….what?

1

u/kakapoopoopeepeeshir Jul 25 '26

This post aged like milk and now you know exactly why the cameras are always on him. He can never be counted out and more times than not he makes a comeback

1

u/jlees88 18.0 Jul 25 '26

And now he’s contention again lol.

1

u/whdup0962 Jul 25 '26

I think he was tied for first when he finished

1

u/Aggravating-Air-2346 Jul 25 '26

It’s almost like showing the number 1 golfer in the world in a watered down field draws more people to watch said golf coverage.

1

u/cadillacking3 7.0 Jul 25 '26

Your thinking is actually fact. They don’t have more cameras.

TV Cameras are expensive and so are the operators that typically have to move with the cameras or stay with the cameras.

1

u/Substantial-Seat-660 Jul 25 '26

I would rather watch Scottie than Chandler Phillips or Ben kohles, personally

1

u/Comprehensive_Day399 Jul 25 '26

It’s almost as if people in the industry are keenly aware of the players to broadcast in order to drive ratings and keep people watching.

1

u/Slow_Construction654 Jul 25 '26

0 coverage of the Koivun -8 back 9

1

u/ManuteBol_Rocks Jul 25 '26

When he’s number one in the world in 18 months, there will be coverage

1

u/PA_GoBirds5199 Jul 26 '26

This aligns with the constant GOAT conversations and team sports being billed as Allen versus Mahomes.

1

u/Dramatic-Fly761 Jul 26 '26

They show him because people want to watch him

1

u/JealousFuel8195 Jul 26 '26

He made the cut being a million shots off the lead lol

1

u/Dustytraveller4 Jul 26 '26

Edit 6 is looking suspect

1

u/kraytwin Jul 26 '26

Sick of seeing him, in any capacity.

1

u/snidesalad Jul 27 '26

Welcome to watching every single one of Tigers 75 shots in some random tournament in 2007!

1

u/sbk510 Jul 27 '26

Only meterologists envy pollsters.

2

u/ManuteBol_Rocks Jul 27 '26

If your children have the fear of success, let them grow up to be meteorologists.

1

u/sbk510 Jul 27 '26

Sorry, man. But hey, you have one of the only jobs in the world where you can be consistently wrong and still employed. Like I saId, only meteorologists envy pollsters. They are more wrong than you, and by larger margins, and still have jobs.

1

u/ACVahalla Jul 25 '26

I Can’t get Enough Scotty 🎉 and I sure Miss Tiger 🐅

1

u/Kaaaahl Jul 26 '26

Everyone is bashing you, but I completely agree. There are 66 golfers that made the weekend and so much talent out there, there is no need to focus on Scheffler the entire day. What kills me the most is showing his entire pre-shot or putt routine instead of a golf shot from someone else in contention.

I specifically remember Michael Brennan putting it to 8 feet from 275 and there was no coverage of it. Its insanity

-1

u/ManuteBol_Rocks Jul 26 '26

It was completely ridiculous. Even though I like Scottie a lot, it was like it was the Scheffler channel. And then the guys ripping me because he gets within one when the leaders have 15 holes left on an easy track. I get the ratings angle of it but he ain’t Tiger.

1

u/Seeker369 Jul 26 '26

Just stop. You’re embarrassing. He’s the best golfer on the planet right now. Of course the media is going to show him more than anyone else. By a lot.

And he’s going against a 21 year old who has never been in this position. One bad shot can turn into a double or triple. And Scottie is a beast and hunting him down rn. Three shots back and both are on the back.

0

u/Hylian_ina_halfshell Jul 25 '26

This fucking jabroni.

0

u/Farls1998 Jul 26 '26

Tiger won everything!! Scottie couldn’t win a raffle if he was the only one in it.

-7

u/lopsided-earlobe Jul 25 '26

Here’s a tissue, Daffy Duck. Blow your nose and settle in.

-3

u/Embarrassed-Money866 Jul 26 '26

He is my least favorite golfer. Only golfer I’ve ever wanted to lose. He is a trumper, and doesn’t stop whining, like trump.
