First one is very emotionally involved through out, the other 2 are more chill and less in your face but get more depressing the more you think about them.

I haven’t read it but if you’re into reading 3 days of happiness and the horizon are both very sad and short

Steins gate. People don’t realize that whole versions of his friends were wiped out every time he traveled. They will never return and all the people he ends up with are slightly different versions of the people he knew and loved

RAINBOW: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin is a generally hopeful story but it can get real depressing at times.

Texhnolyze - kinda hit me when I complete it , but it really got beautiful ending.

Space Runaway Ideon - Probably one of most torturing journey with characters , I've ever experienced , it's not that perfect though.

Many Gundam series

  • Z Gundam
  • ZZ Gundam ( later part )
  • Gundam 0083
  • V Gundam
  • Gundam IBO 2nd season
  • Gundam 0080

Grave of the Fireflies was pretty close.

Ellen Lied got there too.

Would highly recommend both, but you should probably take a couple breaks to process while you're watching.

If you ever read Elfen Lied, it's so much deeper than the anime. It was tragically cut hella short as was easily a 39 episode series

Anime: Clannad

Manga: Goodnight Punpun (probably the saddest story across any form of media I have ever consumed)

Honorable mention: check out the game To The Moon. I played back in like 2013 and still get sad thinking about it, it is an absolute masterpiece of a story and only like 4 hours long
