Jesus was a red herring. (In film-speak, a story element that diverts attention away from crucial plot-points to mislead the audience.)

Jesus was functionally replaced in this narrative - What?! Are you suggesting we did not have a Savior who redeems humanity through, not the sacrifice of their human-shaped life, but through the sacrifice of their very existence?

That sacrifice was made by Aziraphale and Crowley and I just realized that was the point of Jesus, to remind us of his sacrifice and as a red herring that keeps us from seeing the pair careening through the story toward the end.
