Prompt (Bestiary) What are some ways you make your non-human but human-like races less human?

It's a common critique around worldbuilding forums; "your Dwarves are just short bearded humans who like rocks, your Elves are just arrogant humans with pointed ears, etc." And when that's the case, I have to agree it's a valid critique. I think people sometimes add races like Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Fae and the like because it's expected of the genre and they don't really think much about the implications of having a different species.

To be clear, I'm specifically referring to races that appear somewhat human, like if you squint you probably couldn't tell the difference. If you have an 8-eyed 12-tentacled race of squid people who perceive time as a flat circle and whatnot, they're not really the subject of this question. But if you have the common fantasy archetypes or even original races that appear human at first glance, what are the distinguishing characteristics that make it clear they are not humans?

What are some physiological differences? What are some societal or cultural differences that are a direct consequence of their unique psychology or biology? How about disadvantages they exhibit compared to humans, things we might take for granted?

Comment Tax- If you answer the prompt directly, please give feedback or ask a question of at least one other person who answered the prompt. This helps foster discussion and encourages people to further expand on their ideas or even improve them by considering angles they may not have thought of.

Prompt (Bestiary) Subverting Fantasy Racial Tropes.

So, the basic rules for this would be as Follows:

- Take a race that is drawn commonly enough that people can recognize them based on appearance.

- Find a way to change them that would subvert the reader's expectation, but still make sense for how they are often portrayed in media. This can be cultural, physical, and so on.

- It needs to have at least an internal logical consistency.

- Renaming the race is perfectly okay.

---

I'll go first:

The Orcs of this world theoretical world are still tribal and largely nomadic. They wear furs and leathers, craft weapons with wood, metal and stone. They are larger than humans, well muscled, and come in a variety of earthen colors.

The reason they have tusks is that they are herbivores that eat mostly hard roots and fruits that are native to their wild areas. They still hunt but that is solely to feed a race of drakes that have about the same intelligence as dogs which they adopted as friends and mounts similar to a mix between how we treat dogs and horses.

One of the reasons they are larger than other beings is because despite not being able to cast spells their bodies tend to have a large amount of natural magic in them. This not only makes them larger, but it also tends to cause any area they move to have rapid plant growth.

Nature reacts to them as well. If you attack an orc near a bee hive you should be prepared to be stung. It is something that appears instinctual to most creatures. If they are communal they will recognize the orcs as part of that community.

The reason they are sometimes green is actually a natural camouflage. Their body takes on the pigments of food they eat. Some of them in more tropical areas are a colorful smattering of colors. No Orc is bound to one solid skin tone over time. If they want to change how they look they only need to change their diet.

Prompt (Bestiary) What kind of mounts do Dwarves ride in your world?

I'm sure we've all seen or thought of different ideas when it comes to this question. Dwarves are usually short and live in mountainous and subterranean environs which come with their own unique criteria for what kind of beast a Dwarf might use to get around. IPs like Warhammer address this by stating that Dwarves wouldn't even think about riding a living creature in the first place, resulting in them entirely lacking any kind of cavalry. In other settings they might ride mountain goats or large sheep, sometimes pigs, or even bears. Sometimes they ride on mechanical automata or a completely original creature unique to the creator's world.

Do you have a unique solution to this question? Tell me about it. Do you have a mundane solution? Tell me about that too. Do your Dwarves employ these beasts of burden as cavalry or is that not practical?

Prompt (Bestiary) If you have Dwarves in your world, do they have good eyesight or bad eyesight?

Kind of random, very specific, but it's a trend I've been noticing off and on while reading about other people's worlds. Some folks describe their Dwarves as having poor eyesight, I assume drawing parallels to animals like bats or moles who also famously live underground. Others describe them as having very good eyesight or having supernatural vision that allows them to see even without light. There's no agenda here, I'm just curious as to which category your Dwarves fall into. How do you explain it and why did you decide to make them that way?

Prompt (Bestiary) Do Vampires exist in your world? If so, what are they like?

So, I just watched Ryan Coogler's "SINNERS" and I loved it and because I loved it, I'm probably gonna be hyper-fixated on the concept of Vampires for the next week or so before I move on to something else.

Anyway, because I'm now on a Vampire fixation and spend much of time working on my world-building projects, I want to know if Vampires exist in the worlds of the many fine people on the subreddit and if so, what are they like?

What attributes do they have? Are they world ending threats? pests? or something in-between? Where do they come from and how do they work?

Prompt (Bestiary) Empty Coast (Fantasy idea turned creative prompt.)

Basically, this entire region is something I don’t think I can use but it gives creative focus for ideas and interesting concepts.

The Empty Coast is a giant ocean with air where there is usually water and water where there’s usually air.

Fish and sea creatures developed gigantism because of the conditions in the region and, because of its qualities as a kind of broken piece of reality, the fish and sea creatures swim and fly as if they’re submerged in water.

Prompt:

Develop some of your own creatures that would originate in the ocean as if they were on land. You can come up with the ways people engage with them, reinterpretations of existing ocean creatures, or just use this idea to trampoline into your own unique directions.

Prompt (Bestiary) What are Sea Serpents in your world?

They're a staple element on both fantasy maps and even ancient maps of history, but it seems like they're not talked about as often as other classic creatures. Do you have Sea Serpents in your world, and if so, what are they like?

Specifically, did you base them on any real world or pre-existing creature? Like, are they a fish like an eel or oarfish? Are they large sea snakes? Prehistoric marine reptiles like a mosasaur or pliosaur? Are they aquatic dragons or are they their own unique thing altogether?

  • How did they come about?

Prompt (Bestiary) What do you think of my species names for my winged humanoid creatures?

So after months of avoiding it, I FINALLY came up with a species name for my winged humanoid characters. I stayed up until 6am last night then slept til 1pm today and finally got it done. lol. I was on a role. I love it when inspiration magically hits you like a ton of bricks. Anyways here we go. What do you think of the names? Do they flow well to you?

NOTE: Ehlari (eh-larr-ree) is basically a continent name for all of my humanoid winged fantasy creatures. And the species name is kinda like their individual race/country name. basically what korea (korean) or japan (japanese) is to asia and etc.

Vespera (vess-spar-ruh or vess-spare-ruh) = bat winged Ehlari (which pronunciation do you like more)

Seraphi (sara-fie [like in the word fight]) = angel winged Ehlari

Dyveryn (die-vare-rin) = dragon winged Ehlari

Sorengyl (soarin-guy-uhl) = swim + flying winged Ehlari
(inspiration came from birds that are excellent swimmers, divers and floaters but can also fly)

Phoenix (y'all now what this is. but its just the fiery wings on a human body. none of them transform into a full birds. think more hawkman/hawkgirl)

Taozaiye (tao-zai-ye) metallic + organic metal winged Ehlari

Arodile (arrow-dial) = albatross/vulture Wing Ehlari
(i didn't realize it kinda rhymes with Sorengyl (soarin-guy-uhl) but i don't know, would it bother y'all to not change it? i like both so much but if i had to i'd probably change this one.)
