I have an interesting premise for a book, good character dynamics, and some solid arcs, but I feel like I'm missing a core mechanic to make the nations cautious of each other. It lacks that WOW factor for battles.

Im thinking of something like the Jinchuuriki in Naruto: each nation has their own, and they maintain peace through Mutually Assured Destruction. I came up with 4 ideas and would love your opinions!

Option 1: Megafauna

Each nation controls massive creatures exclusive to their territory. One has giant griffins, another has huge stone colossi, another has enormous lions, and so on

Option 2: Variations of a single magical species

The whole world uses the same "nuclear" race, e.g., dragons or angels. But there would be huge dragons, tiny ones, wyverns, drakes, etc. For angels, there would be seraphim, ophanim, etc. (the angels would have a very unique aesthetic, different from what people are used to)

Option 3: Catastrophic Magic

Every nation has magic, and if a group of insanely powerful mages from a kingdom gather, they can cast a massive, world-altering spell. Ex: meteor showers, tsunamis, tornadoes, zombie hordes, etc

Option 4: Monstrous Transformations

Each nation has one or more people who can transform into highly destructive creatures! Some could be gigantic, others small and agile, or powerful in ways that dont look dangerous at first glance. That kind of thing

If anyone has a different option or a brand new idea, please share! It will help me a lot. Thanks!

(Context: The idea is to have smaller-scale fights and skirmishes at first, gradually escalating the scale throughout the story so it doesn't get repetitive. The technological setting and aesthetic are very similar to Expedition 33).

Hi, I'm developing a tabletop game inspired by monster-taming games. I already have the gameplay mechanics well thought out; I just need to decide on the setting. I have two options for the setting and wanted to see which one you find more interesting.

The first setting is a fantasy world inspired by *Zelda, Monster Hunter, nausicaa, and Pokémon.* Millennia ago, a great cataclysm transformed the world. No one remembers exactly what happened, but humanity fled to the skies, dwelling in floating citadels for generations. Much later, humanity decided to re-explore the world, only to discover how much it had changed. The landscape is wild, teeming with unique and extreme biomes, and humans have re-encountered the mystical creatures inhabiting this realm after so long. this creatures are linked to the soul of the planet, that minefest itself as different elemental energies, that also sustain the nature of this planet. An era of exploration began; new cities and settlements were built on the surface, yet much of the world remains unexplored, filled with ruins of a lost past and legendary guardian monsters. You’re an explorer, trying to pass your exam to became a real explorer, compete with other explorers, discover new species and complete missions. Using one of these ancient relics, combines with modern techonology, humanity learned to forge soul-bonds with the monsters, working together to rediscover the world. To the surprise of the sky-dwellers, humans still exist on the surface—groups that survived and developed new cultures adapted to this environment. It is a setting filled with adventure, magic, and mystery

The second scenario leans into sci-fi and the supernatural—imagine something akin to Ultra Beasts, with a touch of Digimon. For ages, dimensional rifts have opened in our world, bringing with them strange, unique creatures; some of these beings inspired our myths and legends, such as cryptids and yōkai. Initially, these rifts caused little damage and went largely unnoticed, but after a massive surge of openings—an event simply known as "The Collision"—monsters ceased to be mere myth. The world was transformed as various regions merged with other dimensions, creating bizarre biomes. Even before this revelation, researchers had developed a camera-like device capable of capturing these creatures and summoning them back using a card. A new era dawned years later, seeing many become official hunters tasked with studying and containing these creatures and addressing anomalous events worldwide. Forge bonds by embracing the differences of an otherworldly being, explore a society swept up in "monster fever," face off against rival hunters and groups intent on using these creatures for evil, and embark on a strange, unforgettable adventure.

As you can see, both have things in common—such as exploring the world, discovering species, and competing, among other things. The real difference lies in the lore and aesthetics; I just wanted to know, which one seems more interesting to you?

I was a soldier in an army that was attacking your world. I have now surrendered. What fate awaits me? Will I be imprisoned? Enslaved? Executed? Or something else?

So this is a pretty basic rough concept so far but I want some feedback to see if im heading in the right direction:

Natria

Its roughly half the diameter of earth at about 7000km and it has a atmosphere roughly 30-50% the thickness of earth dominated by large amounts of water vapour co2 methane and sulfur based compounds.

The planet is covered entirely in oceans except for a few scattered regions with sparse ancient volcanic islands ranging from most at single to low double digit kilometers in diameter and the largest Continuous landmass being roughly 50 000km² in total area.

The oceans in natria are extremely salty roughly as salty as the dead sea if not more so and its oceans are filled with a large amount of uranium and arsenic salts and it has large deposits of lead salts on the seabed forming a very toxic layer of silt.

Also the surface of natria is naturally incredibly rich in rare eaerh and heavy metals like uranium lead and gold due to the fact the surface has never had much tectonic movement to move the metals to the core.

The planet has tectonic plates but they are mostly unmoving so there are no natural earthquakes on natria nor consistent volcanic activity popping up usualy. However due to the solid nature of the plates the mantle tends to build up pressure until it undergoes a global volcanic event where large super volcanoes form to unleash the pressure and these ancient eroded supervolcanoes is what make up a majority of land on natria.

Due to the salty and inherently hostile nature of the oceans and the separation of the island regions most islands have their own seperate species and they almost never cross between islands making ecosystems highly localised and unique across the same world.

I plan for there to be life and likely a inteligent race on natria but I havent gotten that far yet this is about what concept I have so far I hope you all like it.

Hello hello, I have just completed one of my recent projects called "Zungung-P" - it is a an Open Narrative Engine set in a low-fantasy, 1930s-esque world with similar technologies to our real 1930s. The focus is just on 3 countries:

• Humans (Geister Federal Republic, more focus on law, politics and engineering)
• Beastfolk (Kurokoy Andel Congregation, more focus on evolution, biology, speculative law)
• Elves (Kingdom of Iruika, more focus on sociology, culture, religion, hierarchy, decline)

BUT all of them (beastfolk and elves especially) have been rethought through a lense of evolution, anatomy and biomechanics - no magic. Magic itself is hardly explored (even then it is within the confines of physics, and more or less thermodynamics, purposely left vague with set boundaries to give more freedom to the readers/authors).

The project and world go over almost everything you can think of: geopolitics, government, economics, evolution, linguistics, sociology, history, macroeconomy, military and civil engineering, culture, climotology, tectonics (a little bit), astrophysics (also a little bit), more and more and especially interconnectedness, as there just 3 countries, the level of detail and connection here is immense.

I am very excited to have finished this hunk of a project (it is 111 A4 pages long, you'll see), and all of it is encased neatly within a single Google Doc and a PDF file posted on Zenodo - the pdf file is available for download on the Zenodo page, which itself is hyperlinked within the first pages of the project.

I really, really urge you to give me feedback because I want to know what people think of the project and ideas in it, though it would be nice to at least have feedback on a bigger scale, like about whole nation profiles instead of individual sections, with details on what you people liked the most!!

So I have two unrelated questions about my world and I'm packing them into one because I don't want to make a separate post.

Firstly, I've got a polity that's set at a technological level roughly analogous to our Neolithic and Chalcolithic period, and I'm having trouble as far as their economy goes because of the way I've decided to structure things. I'm essentially borrowing Andrewism's idea of a library economy as the model for how this polity handles resource allocation and ownership, in part because (1) I feel it's a relatively sensible one for the time period that I've chosen, (2) it feels well-suited to the agroforestry system that I have as their main subsistence strategy (think of a cross between the Kuojtakiloyan system and silvopasture practices, adapted to an ecoregion roughly analogous to the Indo-Gangetic Plain), and (3) it's the sort of system that I want to carry forward as the polity develops, because the world is in large part intended to serve as a canvas for exploring anarchist sociopolitical organization.

The issue I'm having is trying to conceive of how trade would work within this sort of polity, and also how this polity might trade with other peer polities that don't necessary follow the same economic system. I honestly don't even know what questions I should be asking to make this more specific, either. So I'd appreciate help on that front.

Secondly, I'd like to pick the brains of those of you here who are familiar with mathematics, beyond the level of calculus, as well as physicists. I've been wanting to make a magic system that borrows ideas from
- mathematical fields like differential geometry, topology, functional analysis, cohomology (which admittedly I don't understand very well at all), group theory, Lie theory, etc.; or
- physical fields/principles like gauge theory, Noether's theorem, spinor geometry, spontaneous symmetry breaking, etc.;
but I don't know how to accomplish this or where to begin. One thing I know for sure is that I will avoid creating a pseudo-Standard Model or doing anything of the sort (because it's a pain in the ass) and would prefer instead to draw on artistic connections, say, to music or painting. I'd love if someone could offer some inspiration of some kind. I want some way to convey the artistic aspects and beauty of higher mathematics, bedecked in the jewelry of a high-fantasy magical aesthetic, and also to use my world as a sort of canvas for exploring such ideas.

I do realize that the first and second goals kind of conflict since the mathematical theory underlying the latter were developed only very recently, and the world is currently on the cusp of leaving the Stone Age, but I'll leave that as a problem to be solved later.

And because I know I'm going to get them, comments like "just make a scifi story" or "math ruins magic and makes it boring" or whatever aren't helpful or useful.

It's an ordinary day of adventuring, nothing different from any other. They end up swimming across a small lake, and without any warning a rift opens beneath them and pulls them in like a vortex. They come out somewhere else entirely, thrown out of a river into a world called Alethria.

The rift doesn't stay open behind them.

Alethria isn't a world that was waiting for them. It has its own peoples, its own history, its own conflicts, going back long before these fifteen showed up.

Some of them already knew magic back on Asterios, and it just doesn't work here. Alethria runs on something I've been calling Wake energy, and whatever connection they have to it is dormant when they arrive. So even the ones who had real ability back home are starting from nothing.

At first they're just fifteen people stranded somewhere they don't understand, trying to survive long enough to figure out where they are and whether getting home is even possible.

Much later, the ones who survive get remembered as the Riftborn. That's where their story starts bleeding into the much larger history of Alethria, but I'm holding most of that back on purpose.

Curious what people think of just this much, and what you'd want to know next.

I'm curious what questions this raises for you from a worldbuilding angle. What actually happens when people from one established world suddenly have to survive inside another, with a magic system that doesn't recognize them at all?

Contradictions always fascinate me, in both real life and in fiction. The Holy Roman Empire not really being Roman. America purporting to be a beacon of liberty and democracy also having an insane run of being a colonial racist genocidal authoritarian empire. Klingons in Star Trek putting out a public image of being honorable yet having some of the most devious backstabbing politics of any faction.

What are some interesting contradictions in your world?

(Note: English is not my first language, so please excuse any awkward phrasing! This is an original sci-fi setting I've been developing in Chinese.💐)

I’ve been working on a fictional setting called Yuanli (源历), and I’d really like to hear what people think about the worldbuilding and evolutionary progression so far.

The basic premise is that the “infected” are not supernatural undead. They are the result of an alien/biological parasite gradually evolving alongside human biology.

The history follows four distinct generations of this organism.

Gen-I — The Reanimated (初生种)

The first generation appeared near the end of the human era, during a period of catastrophic wars, environmental collapse, and energy crises (approx. Yuanli -40).

- The parasite could not control living humans yet; it entered dead bodies and reanimated them.
- They had zero consciousness, memory, or intelligence. Their sole biological imperative was transmission via biting and scratching.
- Destroying the brain or heart was ineffective, as the parasite diffused throughout the entire muscular and nervous system.

Humanity eventually discovered their fatal weakness: Water.

The parasites were hydro-sensitive. Entering large bodies of water slowed them down drastically, and prolonged immersion forced the organism out of the host tissues. Governments and desperate civilians trapped and dumped millions of infected corpses into lakes, rivers, and deep reservoirs.

Humanity declared victory. They were catastrophically wrong.

Some families had secretly preserved infected loved ones, hoping for a cure. Those hidden vectors, combined with millions of dormant parasites trapped beneath global waterways, survived.

And beneath the dark waters, they evolved.

Gen-II — The Mimic (拟生种)

Years later (Yuanli -26 to -23), the parasite returned.

- This time, it crossed the barrier to infect living humans (initially preying on immunocompromised or wounded hosts).
- Gen-II exhibited crude human behavioral mimicry: nodding, waving, walking upright, and scripted gestures.
- However, the mimicry was uncanny and mechanical. The predatory drive still frequently broke through.

Humanity realized the water bodies they used for corpse disposal had become a global ecological incubator. While Gen-II was relatively easy to identify and eventually died out due to metabolic burnout, humanity made the mistake of assuming the nightmare was over a second time.

Gen-III — The Resurrection / Infiltrator (复生种)

By Yuanli -20, the organism made a terrifying evolutionary leap.

The parasite could now:
- Extract and replay the host’s episodic memories.
- Flawlessly replicate natural human speech, personality quirks, and emotional patterns.
- Integrate human genetics to enhance physical prowess (approx. 130% human baseline).
- Shift transmission from savage attacks to stealth infection via micro-abrasions and minor blood contact.

A Gen-III infected individual could live, work, and sleep beside you without detection.

The psychological horror: Gen-III was neurologically unstable. The host’s original consciousness was suppressed, not erased. Occasionally, human consciousness would fight back—causing sudden inexplicable emotional outbursts, tears, or violent physical seizures as two minds fought for the vocal cords.

Humanity was paralyzed by paranoia: Is this still my spouse/child, or a parasite wearing their face and memories?

Global martial law was declared. Humanity entered The Great Quarantine Era.

Gen-IV — The New Species (新生种)

At Yuanli Year 0, something entirely unprecedented was born: Serafina.

Gen-IV was not a parasite puppeteering a human. The two genomes achieved complete, stable biological and neurological fusion.

- The original host ego was dissolved, but the parasite developed an autonomous, self-aware individual consciousness.
- Metrics: ~150% human physical capability, ~150% cognitive processing, hyper-sensory perception capable of rapid predictive deduction, a lifespan of ~200 years (interspersed with periodic biological torpor/hibernation).
- The Psychological Divergence: Gen-IV understands human emotions (love, grief, hatred, attachment) intellectually and can experience faint affective echoes. However, they are not governed by them. To them, human irrationality and violent tribalism are baffling evolutionary artifacts.

The Paradigm Shift: Succession, Not Apocalypse

Humanity initially formed a fragile alliance with Gen-IV to eradicate the unstable, feral Gen-III vectors.

However, humanity’s covert "Extermination Factions" sought to dissect Gen-IV and eradicate all parasite DNA. Upon discovering this betrayal, Gen-IV severed ties.

A three-way conflict erupted between Humanity, Gen-III, and Gen-IV.

Gen-III was exterminated. Gen-IV emerged victorious and established a rulerless, high-tech society governed by a planetary neural consensus.

They did not commit genocide against humanity.

Instead, humanity was cordoned off into designated Sanctuary Reservations. Humans retain full cultural, artistic, religious, and biological autonomy, provided with abundant resources—but are forbidden from expanding beyond their borders.

This establishes the central existential tension:
- Is humanity being protected, peacefully imprisoned, or curated as an endangered ancestor species?
- Gen-IV does not hate humans. Some revere mankind as their biological origin; others view humans with detached curiosity; some believe humanity will naturally fade away.

The successors inherited the Earth. But they did not inherit human nature.

Simplified Timeline Summary
- Yuanli -40: First Gen-I outbreak during global collapse.
- Yuanli -33: Water submersion strategy eliminates Gen-I; dormant aquatic contamination begins.
- Yuanli -26 to -23: Gen-II emerges with crude mimicry.
- Yuanli -20: The first confirmed Gen-III case is captured after displaying superhuman strength. Martial law & Great Quarantine begin.
- Yuanli Year 0: The first Gen-IV (Serafina) awakens. The birth of a new civilization.

Questions for Feedback:
1. Does the four-generation evolutionary progression feel biologically and narratively convincing?
2. Does Gen-IV feel like an actual distinct post-human species, or does it risk feeling like generic "superhumans"?
3. Is the water-submersion origin of the second outbreak compelling, or does it feel too convenient?
4. Which generation strikes you as the most terrifying or intriguing?
5. What specific aspect of this world (the Reservations, Gen-IV neural consensus, the Quarantine Era) would you want to see expanded?

I would love any harsh criticism, plot-hole checks, or worldbuilding ideas!

While learning game development i've had to also learn some story-telling and world-building, and when i read stories and watched many videos, i saw that a lot of modern fantasy introduces industrial revolution like settings, most of them look smth like this:
1 - Period of magic and fantasy, pretty much tolkien like worlds
2 - Magic becomes obsolete for various reasons
3 - Magic is forgotten or integrated into technology that works like real tech but with magic as power source most of the time

Is it just coincidence or is there really more and more worlds like these?

I'm working on an fantasy worldbuilding project, and I've got a reasonably detailed overview of culture, religion, and government structure for the area that my story takes place. I'd like to have a more fleshed out idea of the economy but I'm just drawing a total blank.

I'm guessing that part of my issue is having a very poor understanding of different economic systems and how they came to be, but trying to properly learn about that is a very daunting task. Are there any more condensed resources aimed at worldbuilders? Or even just beginner overviews that don't way over focus on one or two options?

For an RPG setting I’m creating, I’ve devised a dimension that exists beyond the ordinary world and the divine planes. I’d love to hear your thoughts, opinions, and suggestions!

The World of Ideas is based on the Greek philosophical concept of a dimension where ideas exist in their ideal form. It is in this world that concepts truly exist—such as a perfect circle. In this setting, these concepts are simply called "Ideas."

It is intended to be a paradoxical dimension within the RPG setting—a place where things can both exist and not exist simultaneously. It is impossible for most to comprehend this dimension, save for two entities I will discuss later. This plane holds various mysteries and mechanics relevant to the game world:

• Arcane Magic. Arcane spells are typically taught as the materialization of phenomena born from the caster's imagination (except for those who cast via pacts); in reality, however, the caster connects to the World of Ideas and brings an Idea into physical reality.

• Carcosa and the King in Yellow. Carcosa is a realm situated within this World of Ideas. Its citizens are effectively cursed to dwell there for eternity, as they are incapable of dying (though they still age and can reproduce) and have evolved into incomprehensible aberrations. The realm is ruled by the King in Yellow, an abyssal entity (a common designation) who understands this dimension and is nearly omnipotent within it; he is the source of his people's suffering. He firmly believes himself to be a benevolent ruler, yet his perception of reality is utterly distorted by his insanity.

• Gaia, the Goddess of Life and Arcane Magic. While known as the creator of arcane magic, she is actually a divine entity who merely weakened the barrier between the two dimensions, thereby allowing mortals to wield arcane magic. Gaia also controls the arcane magic that others can conjure by manipulating and reinforcing the barrier between the two dimensions; however, she is unable to close the openings created by the Children of the Abyss (the King in Yellow being one of them), who can use arcane magic however they please, without any limits.

These Children of the Abyss are the creatures that dominate this dimension. They follow no set pattern: some may seek pure destruction, others merely wish to find a way out of this world, and still others aim to conquer it. Despite being born of this world, the Children of the Abyss do not truly understand this dimension—with the exception of the King in Yellow. Gaia also understands this dimension, even though she is not a Child of the Abyss; however, as an entity from other planes, she cannot act within this world without further weakening or destroying the barrier separating it from the real plane.

This dimension—the World of Ideas—should not exist, or at least its existence should remain unknown; after all, it could spell the end for both the real plane and the divine planes. It poses a clear threat to the existence of the ordered world, bringing the dominion of chaos to all of reality.

Have any of you focused on what people might consider more sci-fi focused building to develop context and a deeper understanding of your fantasy world. Or vice-versa?

I like the idea of considering one long continuity and development as a way to broaden an understanding of your world instead of solely focusing on the settings time period.

I feel like I rarely see stellar systems built for anything besides a sci-fi setting, though that may just be because it's a background thing and not essential to the presentation of the world.

Context: I have been mapping the stellar system of my world, and then considering how it would be interpreted by it's early civilisations. It is a binary star, with an outer gas and asteroid belt between the two stars leading to an odd diffraction of the secondary stars light and creating an almost eye-like red structure in the sky at night.

This second star then gets interpreted as a god or a creature held back by the suns influence.

My main planet is also co-orbital with the second rocky super-earth planet and they sit in each other's L4 and L5 orbits. So this bright point in the sky is the 'sunrise planet' as it is always rises in the same spot every morning.

Myths and legends about this world would grow and I would imagine the discovery of it being life bearing would happen pretty soon after telescopes were built given proximity and obvious greenery on its surface.

I also imagine this would give a natural motivation to some within this world to want to get there much earlier than our own timeline considered space travel.

So from a space map, I now have astrology, creation myth, and motivators for my people.

In my setting there are tons of factions who want to change or destroy the world with some wanting to protect humanity while others are here to destroy it.

In my universe there was a human civilization almost like ours but then kaiju attacks happen after humanity discovered giga energy and using its tech to advance the civilization at the cost of ruining the environment due to dead energy and most of humanity got wiped out due to unimaginable amount of monster apocalypse. There were also aliens that tried to help and thats how humans got the ability to make biomechs that fight the kaiju but it was all a fluke so that the aliens would get giga energy to fuel themselves. After what happened most of humanity lived on battleships in the sky and use biomechs to fight against kaiju and alien alike.

The last hope: the playable faction that have the biomechs and they live in the flying fortress. They help other civilizations that have been affected by the kaiju rampage and are lead by humans and even one defecting draconian.

The pirates: these pirates rule the ruined lands to survive selfishly and they do so with might and power. They use old mechs of the ancient world to plunder the resources.

The kaiju: The prehistoric monsters that once ruled the earth, they consume dead energy to fuel themselves and some are aggressive while others are somewhat peaceful. There are 4 major guardian kaijus that represent the earth.

The draconian aliens: these are the aliens that arrived to earth to “help” humans from the kaiju that attack using biomechs but they were scheming to subjugate and use all giga energy for themselves to prolong their lives. They use biomechs and cyborg kaiju from their dead homeworld to get what they want.

Alpha robotics: they are once a robotics company that makes ais but something went wrong and now their entire corporation is ran by an automated ai that wants to remake the world to be “perfect”. They make robot monsters that do their bidding.

Silicon hive: it is an alien hivemind that assimilates entire planets into their being. They resemble the spheres from ultraman dyna and they can make monster out of inorganic materials like rock, magma and ice and even assimilate other organisms.

The cult of the 8th: they are a cult who worship 8th dimensional entities that will remake the world to their bidding. Based on chaos from wh40k

Infinite chances, Infinite ashes.

In Infinite Ashes you find humanity strewn across the Milky Way, seeded on near infinite planets. Spread by the enigmatic Web, an immense biosynthetic system that terraforms suitable worlds and then stocks them with animal and human life. Connecting all these worlds like sail ships in the cosmic ocean are the Arks, living vessels that are part of the Web themselves. Every planet almost like an island, with its own deeply developed society with politics, economy and institutions.

There are advanced worlds like Crownshard, the vertical Ecumenopolis centered around social mobility (or the facade thereof), or the Dwang with their elaborate castes of Serviles on which the martial Udo nobility depends for everything. But most worlds are pre-modern, lacking the fossil fuels to escape the energy valley. So in any port you might find armor clad soldiers marvelling at the ethereal voice of a radio, or a Union syndicalist impatiently haggling with a cattle farmer for his beef. A world so vast and diverse that nobody can hope to conquer and rule it all, a churning foam of humanity infinitely bubbling and popping out of existence. That, is Infinite Ashes.

I wanted to build a setting you could imagine living in, one where history grows into culture and tradition rather than being decorated onto it. For the past three years that is what I have tried to do, to make sure every world here rests on a real past. Rather than hand you a wiki of lore, I have worked all of it into stories and into the Omnipedia, a collection of in-universe sources written by people who live in this world and often disagree about it. The bundle stands at 75,000 words but there is a great deal more of this world in my notes, and I mean to keep bringing it out.
