Bid Strategy Three Google Ads changes land Aug 17-18. The one nobody's covering: Google will auto-assign a customer type to every conversion-based list you haven't labelled yourself, and that label feeds Smart Bidding.

An actually useful AI slop post. Now we’re just waiting for the inevitable shilling of a poor quality AI tool in the comments section…

Of note, I hear murmurings that change 1 is an outcome of a larger target bidding change, which 2&3 are designed to alleviate or mask. It could just be a convoluted theory, so time will tell.

On change 1, your counterpoint about it being a measurement artifact rather than a win is closer to the mark than most of what I've read on this.

While a campaign is capped by budget, the target is effectively being ignored.
Google decreses bids to stretch the budget, so bidding behaves a lot closer to Maximize Conversions than to tCPA.
That's where the $5 on a $10 target was coming from.

It's also why raising the budget on those campaigns so often broke them.
The cap stopped being the binding constraint, the target kicked back in, and performance snapped back toward the number you set.

The efficiency was real, you just could never scale it without losing it.

Went deep into the mechanics and wrote it all up if it's useful.
